DiGaetano defeats Yudin for Bergen County GOP Chairmanship

Paul DiGaetano

Hackensack NJ,  After what can be best described as a contentious, race between two local political allies-turned-rivals, Bergen county Republicans have chosen a new leader in former state Assemblyman Paul DiGaetano, who defeated controversial eight-year incumbent Chairman Bob Yudin in a party election held Tuesday.

The vote tally showed DiGaetano who was backed by the Ridgewood blog with and almost 2-1 margin of 539 votes and Yudin with 274.

DiGaetano has inherited a GOP in disarray and reeling from years of infighting . The Bergen GOP has suffered election loss after election loss and was once accused by the Ridgewood blog of losing on purpose . DiGaetano must now lead his embattled party in an effort to gain footing at the county level of politics after a steady decline in party power at that level in recent years.

While we have always liked Bob Yudin , the issues to the Ridgewood blog has been one of winning or in this case not wining .

The once sleepy chairmanship election ended a bitter race, which included allegations of ethnic slurs, a decade-old alleged death threat against a state senator and last-minute campaign literature, political endorsements and emails to party members urging support.

Bergen County Republican Organization Committee members cast their votes determining the outcome.

During Bob Yudin’s tenure as party chairman, BCRO members have watched the party go from having the county executive’s office, the sheriff’s office and a majority on the Board of Freeholders to now having only one incumbent Republican official running for office, Freeholder Maura DeNicola who was also endorsed by this blog.

With six county-level positions Sheriff, three freeholder seats, clerk and surrogate are all up for election on the ballot in November, the Republicans face the prospect of a shut out of county government or political Armageddon.

As repored on this blog a decade-old rumor surfaced when state Sen. Kevin O’Toole claimed that in 2005, when he was the Essex County Republican chairman, DiGaetano threatened his life after O’Toole refused to endorse DiGaetano’s bid for governor. We felt the allegations were fallacious given the source ,O’Tool is a known hot head and has been known to make threats himself.

Republican” Norwood Councilman Allen Rapaport Decision to Back Gottheimer called ‘Betrayal’

Rapaport may face expulsion from BCRO.

March 25,2016

Norwood NJ, “Republican” Norwood Councilman Allen Rapaport  demonstrated more of the cowardise that has so typified the GOP establishment. deciding to defect from his county party organization’s support of Scott Garrett (R-5), the incumbent Republican congressman in his district. Thursday morning, Rapaport joined Garrett’s Democratic challenger Josh Gottheimer in Paramus to declare his decision to endorse him over Garrett , finishing his political career.

With this move Rapaport joins and other failed politicians with Gottheimer in support of Wall Street bailouts , big banks .

Once again Bergen County Republican Organization Chairman Bob Yudin, can not seem to deliver the vote . Yudin told POLITICERNJ ,  that decision by Rapaport was a “betrayal.”and Yudin says he is looking at the bylaws to see how Rapaport’s decision will be dealt with by the BCRO. It seems that the councilman’s future is unclear. https://politickernj.com/2016/03/yudin-republican-councilmans-decision-to-back-gottheimer-was-a-betrayal/?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=New%20Campaign&utm_term=Wake%20Up%20Call%20NJ
“It is a betrayal of his office,” Yudin told PolitickerNJ. “He holds office as a Republican. Our Republican bylaws allow for his expulsion from the BCRO for endorsing the Democratic congress candidate and I am looking into that matter. He is no longer a Republican in good standing.”https://politickernj.com/2016/03/yudin-republican-councilmans-decision-to-back-gottheimer-was-a-betrayal/?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=New%20Campaign&utm_term=Wake%20Up%20Call%20NJ

Rapaport’s decision to endorse Gottheimer comes hot on the heels of the January party switch of “Double dipper “Sheriff Michael Saudino. The once-Republican will now be running as a Democrat on the November ballot. Yudin’s challenger for the BCRO chairmanship Paul DiGaetano, like the rest of the BCRO, he is supporting Garrett.

Rooney Drops Out of Bergen GOP Chairman Race, Endorses Yudin

Bob-Yudin

By Alyana Alfaro | 03/08/16 8:25pm

Kevin Rooney announced at a Tuesday Bergen County Republican Organization meeting that he would be dropping out of the race for BCRO chairman, according to a source.

Despite being critical of current chairman Bob Yudin in the past for his leadership of the group, Rooney also backed Yudin for reelection the source said.

Yudin’s leadership came under fire last year after Bergen County Republicans failed to win any seats on the freeholder board and because of a controversy in LD38 that crippled the Republican race in what was initially pegged as one of the most competitive districts in the state.

Yudin: Saudino’s Party Switch is ‘Treacherous, Treasonous Act’

Bob_Yudin4

By Alyana Alfaro | 01/18/16 3:21pm

Late last week, Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino shocked the county when he announced that, though he was planning on pursuing reelection, it would not be as a Republican. He announced that he would be switching his party affiliation and running as a Democrat in November. Now, Bergen County Republican Organization (BCRO) Chairman Bob Yudin is speaking out against Saudino’s party shift and outlining what steps the Bergen GOP plans to take moving forward.

“We are starting to reach out,” Yudin said of finding a replacement on the ballot for Saudino. “We have a number of people who have expressed interest.”

According to Yudin, the BCRO selects county candidates using a convention. Usually, the deadline to submit a letter of intent to run would be February 1. Because Saudino defected just two weeks shy of that deadline, Yudin says he is considering extending it to February 15 in order to give potential candidates more time.

“He had told both myself and many of my lieutenants that he was running as a Republican,” Yudin said. “So the actual timeframe for people to make a decision, instead of being months or a year or so, is less than two weeks. In all fairness to everyone who is thinking about this, I probably will extend the deadline.”

Yudin also had some harsh words to say about Saudino’s decision. When he spoke to PolitickerNJ the chairman recalled a conversation he had with the Sheriff before the party-switch bombshell was revealed. According to Yudin, Saudino disclosed that he had met with Bergen County Democratic Chairman Lou Stellato about potentially switching parties. Yudin went on to say that the Sheriff assured him he would remain a Republican and that he told Stellato that he was reassured by Yudin’s leadership style, supposedly citing that Stellato would try to impose more control over the governance of the Sheriff’s department.

“That is what the Sheriff told me,” Yudin said. “I took it as a compliment. I was very proud for the Sheriff to say that and for him to have said that to Lou Stellato. That is what I mean when I say I was so blindsided by this treacherous, treasonous act. It is a very, very despicable and dishonorable thing this man has done.”

Yudin said he believes Saudino’s decision to switch his party stems from his perception that he has a higher likelihood of reelection as a Democrat than as a Republican.

Quote of the Day: “I was asked to step down by the state Republicans and I did it because I am a team player. But, I did not want to do that, I wanted to fight. I stepped down and I thought it would just be over, but it is not over.” – Anthony Cappola

Anthony Cappola: ‘I Deserve to Be on this Ballot’

The last two weeks have been turbulent for Anthony Cappola. He was one of LD38’s Republican candidates, he was forced to step down from his position on the River Edge Council, made to drop out of the assembly race and told he would be replaced on the ballot with Fernando Alonso. Then, on Wednesday, he learned that the Bergen County Republican Organization dropped their petition to remove him from the ballot due to financial constraints. Now, he is trying to resuscitate his candidacy in a district that had initially been considered one of the most competitive in the state. Alyana Alfaro, PolitickerNJ Read more
