I am at the library weekly, I love reading real hold in my hands books. The library is a great place to learn, to meet, to expose oneself to new ideas. However, I would like to see a study done about who is actually using the Ridgewood library. I rarely see my neighbors or friends there. Instead I see tutors, I see NY license plates, I see cars with parking stickers from towns in southern bergen county. You see, we have the nicest library in bergen county, we have the only library in bergen county that is open on Sundays in the summer! Why oh Why do we the taxpayers of Ridgewood have to pay for an even better library when more than 50% of the patrons are from other towns? Other than bragging rights or simply because “it’s ridgewood”, there is no reason for the taxpayers of Ridgewood to foot the bill so that the rest of BCCLS can benefit.
Ridgewood NJ, It been over 20 years since the Ridgewood Public Library had an update . A preliminary plan for a renovation will be presented on September 26th to the Village of Ridgewood Council and on October 6, the library will host a public forum ,where according to sources residents will be able to share your ideas and play a part in “reimagining” the Ridgewood Library.
I too am a voracious reader and believe that a library is all about books books books.
But Nancy Greene is a brilliant director, fulling the needs of many different kinds of library patrons. Hence the library having in addition to books many programs, many discussion groups, many different types of resources.
Although I am personally disappointed that the new renovation, if it goes through, will have fewer books, I believe that director Nancy Greene, knows what she is doing, understands the current needs of the majority of patrons, who certainly do not include me.
Now if people like myself are ever going to change the situation we have to convince people of all ages to become more interested in reading books, instead of spending time consuming all the other media vying and getting their attention.
I as a reader, do not have more than two through thirteen for TV. I don’t own a smart phone or a tablet. When I travel I pack books to read. I don’t watch movies although I have a DVD player. Well, seldom do I use my DVD player. I have not joined Facebook. I don’t Twitter nor read Twitter accounts and other social media. I do read this Blog as an interested Ridgewood resident,
Nancy Greene knows that I am not the majority. She is catering to the majority as she should.

You can’t judge a book by its cover, especially the No. 1 bestseller on Amazon — 266 blank pages about why Democrats deserve votes.
“Reasons to Vote for Democrats: A Comprehensive Guide,” by Daily Wire managing editor Michael J. Knowles, published Feb. 8, features the image of a donkey covered by the Stars and Stripes.
“You can go cover-to-cover in about 15, 20 seconds,” the conservative journalist told “Fox & Friends” on Thursday about the ultimate in light reading.
“It took a very long time to research this book,” he said. “When I observed their record and reasons to vote for them — on reasons of economics or foreign policy or homeland security or civil rights and so on — I realized it was probably best to just leave all the pages blank.
“When I started researching the book and going through this exhaustive study process, at first I turned to the 2012 Democratic National Convention, and it turned out they were deciding whether or not to include God in their party platform,” he said.

I saw Green’s presentation. Boy do I ever feel relieved. I am a senior citizen and Nancy said it was too confusing and difficult for people to find the stairs to go to second floor from the first floor and that it is too “dim” to read upstairs , so they need to redesign the first floor to put the staircase to the second floor right in your face when you walk into the library. And they need natural sunlight from a newly designed roof.
I thought I was getting Alzheimer’s disease and going blind. because I always get lost when I am trying to find the stairway and it is too dark for me to read.
The auditorium with tiered seats will seat about 250 she said. Now it seats about 150. Justin Timberlake still won’t come and perform.
Relax Nancy. Buy some new furniture if you have too, update the lighting fixtures if you have to, but they’re fine for me and really, Nanc, that auditorium has featured some top-notch talent, especially in classical music. It has a great stage and grand piano and the viewing from the floor is fine. And great acoustics. So be happy, I am.

Oh! please don’t cut the book shelf space. Most important part of the library!!
Ridgewood NJ, The heartwarming story about Lou Gibson, an 11-year-old boy who finds an old, wooden baseball bat engraved with the initials LG on its handle in his school’s basement. When Lou recalls that the most famous graduate of his school, Public School #132 in New York City, was Yankee great Lou Gehrig, he immediately sets off on a mission to prove that the bat once belonged to “The Pride of the Yankees.” Lou’s search sends him on a journey of triumph, tragedy and discovery when he finds out that when he uses the bat he magically becomes an amazing hitter.
THE STORY OF THE 100 YEAR OLD BAT
In April 2000, I was fortunate enough to purchase a 100 year-old, wooden baseball bat at a bargain price. When the old Spalding® bat arrived, I immediately displayed it on the wall in our family room. I never imagined the bat would generate a story. Here’s what happened:
The bat’s unique, old-fashioned shape and brown patina mesmerized me. I noticed there were initials – RM – carved on the bottom of the bat. I wondered who RM was. How old was he when he received the bat? Did he hit any homeruns with it? What if RM became a major league player later in life and this was his bat when he was a kid?
That last question hit me like a line drive between the eyes. I imagined that the bat once belonged to Lou Gehrig when he was a kid. I then imagined what would happen if a child had the bat today and started using it in his games. Could the bat have special powers in the hands of an imaginative child?
The result of all this imagining is HITTING GLORY – A BASEBALL BAT ADVENTURE

The Ridgewood Public Library has no business getting involved in a performing arts center. They are not the village Entertainment Center.
They are trying to build up their numbers by hosting book clubs, cooking clubs and other hobby clubs. What is the purpose of a library? They need to evolve to electronic information – if that even makes sense.
A performing Arts Center should use private funds. Create a nonprofit and give it a go. Government should not be in the entertainment business. And opera and ballet are entertainment.

In today’s standards-based education system, the main focus is on teaching skills rather than content. There’s a prevalent idea that it matters less what students read just so long as they are reading.
But according to E.D. Hirsch, professor emeritus of education and humanities at the University of Virginia, that’s bull.
Some of you may know Hirsch through his famous advocacy of “cultural literacy”—the idea that some amount of “shared, canonical knowledge is inherently necessary to a literate democracy,” and that students in a particular culture should have common exposure to certain texts and concepts.
