Ridgewood NJ, Reusing passwords for multiple accounts can lead to password compromise, unauthorized account access, cyberattacks, and data breaches. Gen Digital, formerly Symantec Corporation and NortonLifeLock, notified customers of breached Norton Password Manager accounts in credential stuffing attacks as a result of compromised accounts on other platforms. NortonLifeLock believed an unauthorized third party acquired username and password combinations from the dark web around December 1 and utilized them in bulk to gain access to Norton accounts, which was detected after an unusually large number of failed login attempts on December 12. The credential stuffing attacks compromised thousands of accounts with potential access to first names, last names, phone numbers, mailing addresses, and possibly data stored in private vaults. This information could be used to compromise other accounts, steal digital assets, reveal secrets, and more. NortonLifeLock reset passwords for impacted accounts, advised enabling MFA, and offered a credit monitoring service. Impacted users who suspect their personally identifiable information (PII) has been compromised should review the Identity Theft and Compromised PII NJCCIC Informational Report for additional recommendations and resources.

Time to Update those Passwords

password infographic

the staff of the Ridgewood blog, we know we are a day late !

Ridgewood NJ, The first Thursday in May is World Password Day, which was originally created by Intel in 2013 as a global effort to address the critical need for strong, unique passwords and emphasize the importance of this first line of defense in securing information, networks, servers, devices, accounts, databases, files, and more against cyberattacks. This day also serves as a reminder to update and organize all recent passwords. Now more than ever before, many users are connected to the internet and access multiple accounts and services for business, including email, applications, and vendor websites. Users also have access to multiple personal accounts, such as email, social media, online banking, bill payment, utilities, healthcare, shopping, entertainment, food delivery, dating apps, and more. The increased use of online accounts and services, combined with users engaging in risky password management practices, puts both themselves and employers at risk of account compromise and data breaches. Therefore, it is important to practice good password hygiene to protect accounts and data, not just on World Password Day, but year-round.

A second New Jersey university has reported that it was the target of a weekend cyberattack that crippled Internet-based services — similar to the one that struck Rutgers University a day earlier.

Fairleigh Dickinson University experienced an attack “on one of the university’s computers from the outside of the FDU network, causing an excessive amount of traffic,” according to an alert sent Saturday to students and faculty.

Reports came in Saturday morning that the network was slow and that later it was unavailable for Internet and other services, wrote Brian Domenick, director of Information Systems and Technology, in the email.

“The attack had the effect of flooding the network; sort of like trying to fit too many cars into the Holland Tunnel all at the same time. This situation, which is known as a ‘Denial of Service,’ severely impaired the university’s network to the point of effectively shutting it down,” he stated.
