Perils of Unleashed Dogs

Ridgewood NJ, Lately there have been articles in local newspapers, including the NY Times, about the perils of unleashed dogs.  Owners who walk a dog without a leash are not really walking the dog – they are walking WITH their dog – and they have virtually zero control over the animal.  The arrogant dog-owner who claims to have full control over his animal is full of it – and you know what we mean by “it.”  Animals, like humans, have minds of their own, and their instinct to run and/or attack can be triggered by all sorts of stimuli.  A “friendly” family pet can run up to a stranger and knock her down without meaning to, can attack a leashed dog who for whatever reason seemed attack-worthy, can dash across the street after a squirrel and be struck by a car (causing death to the dog and anguish for the driver) and numerous other completely unnecessary scenarios.  Unleashed dogs defecate wherever they please, such as on the lawns of people with little children.  In Ridgewood, and most surrounding communities, there is a leash law.  Yes, a law.  That applies to you, and you, and you.  Interestingly in the Saturday Record there is a photo of a Ridgewood couple at Campgaw snow-shoeing with a dog, and not a leash in sight.  Yes, it is a law at Campgaw to have your dogs leashed.  If you want your dog to run freely, which surely is a wonderful thrill for a dog, let him do so in your own fenced property, or at a designated dog-park.

Ridgewood NJ, the Ridgewood blog picked this up off a Facebook group “it takes a Ridgewood Village” ,the author Anne LaGrange Loving gives the latest on her dog walking experience ,  “So here is a new one (to me). I was walking my elderly dog very early this morning and up ahead I saw a woman walking a dog. He pooped, she stopped to bag it, and then she left the bag full of poop there on the grass. What? I could not believe it. I continued walking, but she was getting further ahead because my old dog is pretty slow and we cannot cover much ground at all. But lo and behold, several houses later I saw the same thing happen, bag of poop left behind again. Besides being extraordinarily rude (and I believe against local law), it struck me as really weird that she would bother to bag it if she was not going to take it. Shaking my head.”

Whose responsibility is it to empty the cans in the Ridgewood parks?

Dunham Trail which runs between Grove Street and Spring Avenue

Ridgewood NJ,  This garbage can is overflowing with dog-poop that has been carefully bagged by the responsible owners.  But the can is totally jammed.

The Dunham Trail which runs between Grove Street and Spring Avenue. It seems dog owners and dogs always get such a bad rap from the haters in town……but here you have a clear example that the owners are absolutely trying their best to pick up all the poop, even from a woodsy nature trail, yet no one empties the garbage can.
