Ridgewood NJ, lately, residents have reported an increase in sightings of sick raccoons displaying unusual behavior. While many fear these animals may have rabies, local Animal Control has clarified that the raccoons are more likely suffering from distemper.
The illness, caused by the Canine Distemper Virus, affects a wide range of animals, including raccoons, dogs, foxes, and other wildlife. Distemper is highly contagious, spreading primarily through respiratory secretions or direct contact with infected animals. In raccoons, symptoms of distemper include runny noses, sneezing, watery eyes, seizures, stumbling, and even paralysis.
If you encounter a raccoon displaying any of these symptoms, do not approach it. Instead, contact your local police or Animal Control for assistance.
Pet owners should ensure their dogs are up to date on distemper vaccinations, which protect pets and help prevent the virus from spreading. Keeping pets’ vaccinations current is key to keeping both them and the community safe.
