In New Jersey politics, the “organizational line” — a ballot configuration where candidates endorsed by the party are clustered — has recently come under intense scrutiny. While legally permissible, this arrangement has nonetheless been tied to claims of unethical and secretive agreements that place party agendas above the tenets of fair democracy. A prime instance illustrating the misuse of this system surfaced amidst both of my campaigns for US Congress in New Jersey’s 5th District.

How Bergen County Republican Mayors Win in Democrat Majority Towns

Westwood  NJ, what do Bergen County Mayors, Carlos Rendo (Woodcliff Lake), Mike Ghassali (Montvale), John Glidden (Closter), Dan Pronti (North Arlington), Daniele Fede (Bogota), Ray Arroyo (Westwood), and a few others, all have in common? They are Republican Mayors in towns with more registered Democrats than Republicans. In fact, in Bergen County, where registered Democrats far outnumber Republicans, there are more Republicans serving as Mayors and Council than there are Democrats! While this might seem counterintuitive, it makes a great deal of sense.

Pallotta, candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s Fifth Congressional District, made the following statement in response to the House of Representatives’ vote to continue impeachment proceedings against President Trump: “Josh Gottheimer showed his true colors today. New Jersey’s Fifth District supported President Trump and wants Congress to focus on delivering commonsense solutions on pressing issues like immigration and prescription drug prices. In his vote, Josh seeks to upend the will of the district he supposedly represents in order to cater to Nancy Pelosi and liberal activists who have been after this President since Day 1. Our district deserves a representative who will truly represent our interests, and when I’m in Congress, I will end our participation in these ridiculous partisan fights.”
