Gratitude to ‘Graydon Storytime’ readers
Nancy A. Bigos
to the Editor:

For several years now, an annual tradition taking place at the Graydon Pool each summer has been the children’s “Graydon Storytime.” This special program held weekly on Thursday afternoons for nine consecutive weeks delights pre-school children, their siblings and parents.

At each session, a fun and interesting story is read to those in attendance, afterwards an exciting activity, song, game, or arts and crafts project accompanies the theme of the reading. There are usually 30 or more children participating in this very special time each week.

It is with heartfelt gratitude that I share my appreciation to the Ridgewood volunteers who give of themselves to make this offering possible. Throughout this 2014 summer season, the residents that volunteered at each weekly program were Suzanne Kelly, Lisa Conklin, Joan Powers, Stacy Bouffard, Dolores Carpenter, Sally Brandes, Betsy Murphy, Toney Jackson, Carol Coughlin, Morgan Kelly and the Graydon Pool lifeguard staff.

Standup Paddleboard Yoga taught in Ridgewood

On the first day of class in late July, yogis could be seen practicing downward-facing dog and cat cow poses, not in a yoga studio, but on the undulating waters of Ridgewood’s Graydon Pool.

SUP yoga combines yoga poses with surfing and is practiced on 10- to 12-foot-long boards, anchored in the water by bags of sand attached to a paddleboard. The beginner-friendly sport of standup paddleboard began in the 1940s in Hawaii, when surfers made their way through the waves with a long paddle. In the short time it has been around, yogis have embraced a practice that seems to bring a sense of blissful freedom to the centuries-old earth-bound practice.

“SUP Yoga takes a lot of physical work, but just as much mental work to perform a simple pose,” said Andrea Powers, program director and yoga instructor for SUP yoga. “A student must practice patience, concentration and focus or the board will gently remind you to stay in the present moment. When you do SUP Yoga, there is nowhere else you can be.”

Ridgewood’s Graydon swim team well-represented at county meet

Fresh off winning the Lake League championship, a group of swimmers from Ridgewood’s Graydon swim team performed a worthy encore at their last meet of the summer season in the New Jersey Pool Managers Association (NJPMA) county championships.

Ashleigh Afromsky starred for Graydon with a first-place finish in the girls 13-14 50-meter backstroke, earning the team’s only gold medal in the meet final held last Saturday at Stonybrook Swim Club in Hillsdale. The preliminaries and finals were held at various venues from Aug. 4-9.

Afromsky was one of 13 swimmers from the Ridgewood team to participate in the county meet, and one of eight to take part in an event final.

“It’s a fun experience for them and it opens their eyes a little bit,” Graydon aquatics director Dan Burzinski said Wednesday. “When you’re the big fish in a small pond, you don’t realize what else is out there.”

Lessons go beyond swimming

“I’m tired…”

“No, you’re not,” said my patient Graydon Pool swim instructor Ryan Martin. “It’s all in your head.”

I tried to calm down, but my facial muscles were tense, and my treading arms were moving in frantic circles. As the water moved closer to my mouth, an irrational thought started to circle through my head.

I’m going to drown. I’m going to drown.

I’m not one to give up on things, but put me in a body of water over 6 feet and watch me freak out in five minutes.

I’m 24 years old, and I can’t really swim – but thanks to my recent adult swim lessons at Graydon Pool, at least I’m now on the right track.

So, how did I get to this point?

I took lessons at the YMCA as a kid, but I abruptly stopped, for unknown reasons, after mastering “airplane, chicken, soldier” floating. I’ve since mostly avoided swimming. Thanks to friends, I learned the basics of freestyle, but I never became skilled enough to truly enjoy swimming.

I know I’m not alone, but it often feels like it: In my experience, people who can’t swim generally are too embarrassed to liberally share that information, even if, like me, they want to swim.

Ridgewood resident Dawn Walter steps in to keep camp program afloat

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

After a period of uncertainty for a beloved, 46-year tradition, Paterson children will once again be swimming at Graydon Pool and the Ridgewood YMCA this August.

Thank Dawn Walter.

This spring, the 12-year Ridgewood resident took on a leadership role previously held for 28 years by former resident Eileen Mohan, who moved to Singapore for her husband’s job last August.

“These are memories. The kids look forward to this, and it changes their lives,” Walter said.

When Mohan moved, the program she led – which coordinates free YMCA swim lessons and Graydon Pool swim time in August for campers from Paterson – was left in jeopardy. There was no known replacement for several months, and Mohan was worried that the program would fall to the wayside.

This April, Walter stepped up.

Walter, a member of the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood’s Citizens for Swimming, said she wanted to do something “more hands-on” to help people.

“This is about as hands-on as you can get,” she said. “This will keep them [the children] safe their entire lives.”

Since 1968, Citizens for Swimming has coordinated Ridgewood swimming field trips for Paterson young people. Nearly 50 years later, children from Paterson’s Community Association with a Ministry to People Youth Development Program (CAMP YDP) still look forward to the program.

The Great Ridgewood Duck Derby- July 19th

The Great Ridgewood Duck Derby

On Saturday, July 19th, Ridgewood Parks & Recreation, in cooperation with Jacobsen Landscape Contractors of Midland Park, will be hosting the Great Ridgewood Duck Derby at Graydon Pool. Come out and embrace the national “Come Alive Outside” campaign and join us for an afternoon of fun family activity. This event will feature an array of different types of entertainment. There will also be a number of different kinds of activities throughout the day such as beach games, a sand sculpture contest, duck decorating, face painting, and ultimately concluding with a rubber duck race.

Pre-registration is a must and the deadline for advance sales is July 17th. The cost to take part in this fun family event is $10 per person ($15 per person non-residents) which includes a BBQ ticket and one rubber duck. With the BBQ ticket you get a hamburger or hotdog, chips, and a beverage.

The “Come Alive Outside” campaign started in 2010 by Jim Paluch in hopes of combating the sedentary, indoor lifestyle that is contributing to a multitude of adverse effects in our society. Playing outside has more benefits than just the physical, outdoor play can help children develop social skills, reduce stress, and increase their self-confidence. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 60 minutes of free play outside daily is essential for a child’s development which is why it is the “Come Alive Outside” campaign’s mission to create opportunities for children to get outside for some good healthy fun.

To register for the Great Ridgewood Duck Derby you can either stop by The Stable at 259 N. Maple Ave and fill out a registration form or go online at www.ridgewoodnj.net/communitypass. The rain date for this event will be on Sunday July 20th. Please call the Parks & Recreation Department at 201-670-5560 with any questions.

With opening day coming up this Saturday, the 2014 season at Graydon Pool promises to offer pool-goers several new attractions.

This year, members will be able to access the pool via a new Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant ramp, which runs alongside an existing stone wall near the pool’s snack stand.

In addition to the ramp, the Parks and Recreation Department is now offering an adaptive aquatics class for children with special needs, through a collaboration with Mayor Paul Aronsohn and the local Community Access Network group representing those with disabilities.

“I think that we’ve just made the facility accessible and available to all residents, including sensitivity to special needs,” said Nancy Bigos, deputy director of the parks department. “I think that Graydon is really an incredible, special place and I think it has a lot to offer our residents just in the sense of community, and socialization and play.”

In addition to the adaptive aquatics class, there will be a new “introduction to diving” class and three new adult classes: an introduction to swimming for adults, an aquatic fitness program and water aerobics.

Ridgewood pays $25K fine issued by DEP

Ridgewood pays $25K fine issued by DEP

MARCH 26, 2014    LAST UPDATED: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 2014, 1:28 PM

Ridgewood has signed an administrative consent order (ACO) handed down by the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), which cited the municipality last year for improperly discharging water from Graydon Pool into the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook. As part of the ACO, the village has agreed to pay the $25,000 fine linked to the infractions.

On two occasions last May, DEP representatives observed the village pumping water from the pool and into the nearby Ho-Ho-Kus Brook, a practice that Ridgewood employees said they have done for many years. Environmental officials noted that the discharge contained mud and other sediment, a violation of the Water Pollution Control Act.

Ridgewood engineering officials last fall explained that the first few minutes of flow from Graydon’s pumps are usually “quite turbid,” and that initial discharge was what led to the initial DEP citation. The DEP initially levied a $50,000 fine to the village, but appeals filed by Ridgewood cut the amount in half.

“We did try through various channels, but unfortunately they can’t reduce it more than 50 percent,” acting Village Manager Heather Mailander explained earlier this month.

Vincent Loncto is sworn in as Ridgewood schools trustee

THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD – A former chief financial officer for major corporations was sworn in Monday night as the school district’s newest trustee.

Vincent Loncto took his seat as a trustee at Monday’s school board meeting at the district’s Education Center on Cottage Place.

The certified public accountant was one of six candidates interviewed for the trustee post after Charles Reilly resigned earlier this year.

“The school budget is in the process of being developed, so I’m coming in at the right time,” said Loncto, who retired earlier this year from a 40-year career in financial management.

“It has to be done collaboratively,” he said. “What we are talking about here is enhancing the quality of the school system under budgetary constraints. It is detail-intensive work.”

Ridgewood school board interviews six candidates for open seat

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

The Board of Education (BOE) interviewed six candidates this week for the seat left vacant by trustee Charles Reilly’s departure last month.

Six candidates applied and were each questioned by board members on Monday night regarding their professional backgrounds, reasons for applying for the position, and goals as a potential BOE trustee. The decision on Reilly’s replacement will be announced at a public meeting on Nov. 7.

Among the candidates – James Morgan, Gwen Sullivan, B. Vincent Loncto, Janice Willet, Rei Shinozuka and Eric Gross – several themes were consistent across the six interviews. All expressed a desire to contribute to the reputation of the Ridgewood school district, which was a primary reason behind moving to the village for many of the candidates.

Issues of communication, whether relating to complex technical matters such as yearly budgets or simple instances of parent feedback, were also paramount in candidates’ responses.
