Why the U.S. is freaked out about Brexit

By Nicole Gaouette and Stephen Collinson, CNN

Washington (CNN)Britain’s vote to leave the European Union Friday left the United States confronting a threat to the strength and cohesion of both its closest historical ally and a 70-year transatlantic partnership that has been the bedrock of Western peace and prosperity.

The outcome of Britain’s referendum instantly pitched an already weakened Europe into a new crisis, opening the possibility that other member states could choose to leave the E.U. and create new headaches for Washington.

American leaders on all sides of the political aisle Friday expressed respect for the decision of British voters and vowed to stand with America’s “special relationship” ally Britain and the diminished European Union once both partners have finalized their divorce — a period that could take years.

But there was no hiding the concern behind the scenes as the shockwaves rippled through the EU, a body that has been vital to American foreign policy initiatives in recent times, including the drive to a nuclear deal with Iran and attempts to punish Russia for its incursion in Ukraine.

Democratic donor contacts Biden allies about possible run

February 5, 2016

NEW YORK (Reuters) – A prominent Democratic donor worried about the party’s chances of winning the presidency emailed dozens of fans of Vice President Joe Biden on Friday, urging them to remain prepared to donate if Biden jumps into the race.

The donor, Bill Bartmann, cited new polling showing Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont nearly tied with the Hillary Clinton, eroding the 30-point lead the former secretary of state held at the end of last year. Bartmann and other party insiders are concerned that Sanders, a self-proclaimed Democratic socialist, is too far to the left to win against a Republican in the Nov. 8 presidential election.

“We cannot afford to lose the White House,” Bartmann wrote in the email, seen by Reuters.

The email drew a string of affirmative responses, also seen by Reuters.

Biden announced in October that he would not seek the presidency, despite support from a group of backers under the name “Draft Biden 2016.” But whispers have continued among some donors who hope that Biden could be convinced to run after all should Clinton’s campaign prove fruitless.

“My sitting on the sidelines has a lot to do with my disappointment that the vice president decided not to get in the race,” Patrick Baskette, one of the recipients of Bartmann’s email, told Reuters. Baskette, a public affairs consultant in Tampa, Florida, was a special assistant to Biden during his time as a senator.

Trump: If Hillary Brings Up Sexism, Bill Clinton Is ‘Fair Game’

Democratic presidential candidate U

by PAM KEY27 Dec 201595

Sunday on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends” Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said if the Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton attacks him as sexist, it is “fair game” to bring up her husband former President Bill Clinton’s indiscretions.

Trump said. “I think he’s fair game because his presidency was considered to be troubled, to put it mildly, Because of all the things she’s mentioning to me. She actually said sexism, I don’t know if you saw the following tweet, but I turned her words against her from that standpoint. She’s got to be careful and fair. We all have to fight fairly and we have to fight for the good of the country, for the good of the people, for the good of everybody. But we have to fight fairly. And she’s playing the woman’s card. It’s like, give me a break. I have had so many women come up to me, saying, ‘you have to keep her out.’ She’s just terrible. She’s playing the woman’s card left and right. And women are more upset about it than anybody else, including most men.

High stakes for Hillary, lawmakers in Benghazi panel showdown

By Scott Wong and Julian Hattem – 10/19/15 06:00 AM EDT

Hillary Clinton isn’t the only one with a lot riding on this week’s Capitol Hill hearing on the 2012 Benghazi terrorist attacks.

The 12-member Select Committee on Benghazi is loaded with ambitious lawmakers from both parties looking for a breakout moment on the national stage with the Democratic presidential front-runner.

More than half the Republicans serving on the panel have been mentioned as potential candidates to replace Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio). And the committee’s chairman, GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy (S.C.), is widely viewed as having a bright political future back home in South Carolina.

Clinton’s Democratic allies on the panel include one declared Senate candidate, Rep. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, and another potential one, veteran Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland.

Here’s a look at seven members of the Benghazi panel who could shine in the spotlight during Thursday’s showdown

Land Of The Free, Home Of The Brave; Governed By A Lot Of Cowards…

https://dcgazette.com/land-free-home-brave-governed-lot-cowards/

On July 4th 1776 the Declaration of Independence was officially approved and this Nation was born. 56 men signed their death warrant to this historic document between August 2nd of 1776 and January 22nd of 1777. Since then over 2 million men and women have paid the ultimate sacrifice defending our freedom and way of life. They swore to protect the constitution and held true to their word. It makes me sick to hear any coward in Washington say it is too dangerous to impeach The president.

The founders of this country risked their lives by standing up to a king. Cowardly behavior of certain politicians are creating an American King. Our men and women are overseas giving their lives for this country while doing their jobs. Well it’s about time our politicians start doing theirs. This not about race it’s about our country. Every race and religion has served and is represented at Arlington National cemetery. They took the oath that many politicians have forgotten. Let’s remind them of that oath which states “I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office I am about to enter; so help me God.” Some politicians are in breach of their contract with this country and it’s past time they be fired.

________________________________

I don’t care if your black or white the laws of this country apply to us all. Don’t impeach the president because he is black. Impeach this man because he is destroying the constitution he has sworn to protect. Put this man in prison not for the color of skin but for the treason that brings danger to us all. If George Washington had committed this treason he would not have been sent to prison. They would have found a rope and hung him from a tree. If you are afraid of this man and what you call danger? Pack your bags because we need leaders not cowards. If harm comes to the kids of this country every politician will know the true meaning of danger. Three hundred million pissed off Americans are more dangerous than anything this world has ever seen. God bless you all, and may He forever bless this Nation… Semper Fi America, yours forever, Shep

Democrats divided on their path to 2016

By Karen Tumulty and Sean Sullivan December 14 at 7:39 PM

In the six weeks since their repudiation in the midterms, Democrats have seen the opening of fissures within their once-disciplined ranks, marking the start of an internal struggle between now and the 2016 election over the ideological identity and tactical direction of the party.

The tension — shown in high relief during the messy final days of the congressional session — is in some ways a mirror image of the stresses within the Republican Party, which has been divided between its tea party and establishment factions in recent years.

In the case of both parties, the argument pits the more populist, purist elements of the base against the more pragmatic center.

For Democrats, “it is a conflict that was looking for an occasion,” said William Galston, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, who was a policy adviser to former President Bill Clinton. “The election provided the occasion.”

Hillary: ‘Don’t Let Anybody Tell You’ That ‘Businesses Create Jobs’

Appearing at a Boston rally for Democrat gubernatorial candidate Martha Coakley on Friday, Hillary Clinton told the crowd gathered at the Park Plaza Hotel not to listen to anybody who says that “businesses create jobs.”

“Don’t let anybody tell you it’s corporations and businesses create jobs,” Clinton said.

“You know that old theory, ‘trickle-down economics,’” she continued. “That has been tried, that has failed. It has failed rather spectacularly.”

“You know, one of the things my husband says when people say ‘Well, what did you bring to Washington,’ he said, ‘Well, I brought arithmetic,’” Clinton said, which elicited loud laughs from the crowd.
