Trenton NJ, Senator Joe Pennacchio called on Governor Murphy to bring the New Jersey National Guard home from Washington, D.C. after reports that military personnel deployed in the capital to provide security for the inauguration of President Joe Biden had been relegated to sleeping on the floors of parking garages.
Washington DC, statement by Acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller on National Guard Support in Washington DC:
“As is normal for military support to large security events, the Department will vet National Guardsmen who are in Washington, D.C. While we have no intelligence indicating an insider threat, we are leaving no stone unturned in securing the capital. This type of vetting often takes place by law enforcement for significant security events. However, in this case the scope of military participation is unique. The D.C. National Guard is also providing additional training to service members as they arrive in D.C. that if they see or hear something that is not appropriate, they should report it to their chain of command. We appreciate the support of the FBI in assisting with this task and for each of the more than 25,000 Guardsmen who answered their Nation’s call and rapidly deployed to the NCR.”
PARMAUS NJ, The National Guard is sending help to the New Jersey Veterans’ Home at Paramus where 10 residents have died from the coronavirus. The National Guard is sending combat medics and EMTs are among the 40 Guard members who were sent to help. Currently over 20 residents are battling the virus, and nearly 20 staff have also been infected.
Texas Governor Rick Perry announced Monday that he’s deploying as many as 1,000 National Guard troops to help manage the surge of child migrants at the state’s southern border.
Perry, among the most vocal critics of President Obama’s handling of the crisis, said the extra force is needed to deter the wave of immigrants, safeguard Americans from crime and protect taxpayers from the costs of managing the new arrivals.
“I will not stand idly by while our citizens are under assault and little children from Central America are detained in squalor,” Perry said at a briefing in Austin. “The price of inaction is too high for Texans to pay.”
Perry’s move came just hours after the White House announced that the number of unaccompanied minors arriving at the border is dropping – from 355 per day in June to 150 in early July, according to spokesman Josh Earnest.
Earnest said the reasons for the drop remain unclear, but suggested the administration’s efforts “to work with Central American leaders to publicize the dangers of the journey” have contributed significantly.
Perry on Monday acknowledged the drop in the new arrivals in recent weeks, but he offered a different theory for the trend, saying it was a “clear indication” that local, state and federal law enforcement efforts are working.
