Calls Intensify For Legislative Investigation Into Nursing Home Deaths

Trenton NJ,  Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been at least 4,151 coronavirus related deaths in New Jersey’s long-term care facilities including many at the state’s only veterans’ nursing home. That represents more than half of all COVID-19 related deaths in New Jersey to date.

Trenton NJ, On January 21, the State of Washington announced its first confirmed case of COVID-19. Within a month, the virus had taken hold and people were dying. It was quickly evident that many of the deaths were in nursing care facilities.

The outbreak made national news and should have gotten national attention, including from elected officials and health care agencies in New Jersey.

1,530 of the 3840 Deaths due to COVID 19 in New Jersey were in Nursing Homes

Ridgewood NJ,  New Jersey currently has 78,467 confirmed cases of COVID 19, or which 3840 have died.

The State has 384 long-term care facilities in the state reporting COVID-19 cases, for a total of 9,094 cases. Tragically, 1,530 COVID-19 deaths have been reported in these facilities. This is the breakdown by county according to the NJ Department of Health dashboard . Clearing the focus should be on protecting residents in long term care facilities , not banning walking in parks or playing golf .

Nursing Homes Need to Comply with Coronavirus Notification Requirements

WAYNE NJ,  Amid reports that the state’s long-term care facilities are failing to properly notify staff, caregivers and families of COVID-19 outbreaks in their facilities, Assemblyman Kevin J. Rooney is calling on the Department of Health to force compliance with their updated directives and state law.
Under state law that went into effect in February, nursing homes must have outbreak response plans that include policies regarding notifying residents, staff and families. The law was in response to an adenovirus outbreak at a Wanaque nursing home that killed 11 children.

New Jersey’s elderly and disabled paid the sixth-highest amount in the nation for nursing home care last year, although the state ranked in the middle as far as availability and quality of service, a survey released today said. (Livio/The Star Ledger)
