An Italian national who specialized in the study of Croatian history was fatally shot during an argument with a friend in a Queens, N.Y. park over the weekend, authorities said, just days after he stayed at a home in Ridgewood while preparing to move to the New York City area.
William Klinger, 42, was shot twice in the head following an argument with a friend in Astoria Park in Queens on Saturday, authorities said Monday in a news release. A 49-year-old Queens man, Alexander Bonich, who was identified by police as a friend of Klinger’s, has been arrested and charged with second degree murder, authorities said.
The historian arrived in the U.S. last week and stayed three days in Ridgewood, where a village man, Mijo Mirkovic, said he hosted him as a favor to a relative. Klinger, who told his hosts that he was about to begin teaching at Hunter College, moved to Queens late last week after saying he found a roommate, Mirkovic said.
Hunter College officials were not immediately able to verify whether Klinger had been hired by the school.
