An air conditioner normally operates in cycles, running long enough to remove heat before shutting off when the thermostat reaches its target. Problems begin when the equipment repeatedly starts and stops after unusually brief periods. This behavior, commonly called short cycling, can reduce comfort while placing additional stress on components designed for steadier operation.

Short cycling is not a single mechanical problem with one universal solution. Thermostat conditions, restricted airflow, electrical components, equipment sizing, and other factors can produce similar operating patterns. Air conditioning repair should therefore begin with identifying why the system is ending cycles prematurely rather than assuming the most visible symptom reveals the cause.
