THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD — Temperatures in the mid-70s couldn’t stop him. A recent bout of bronchitis surely didn’t. And forget about those 25 pounds of firefighting gear — including three and a half pounds of boot on each foot.

In the end, Ridgewood Fire Lt. Brendan Corcoran smashed the Guinness World Record he’d been chasing by more than a full minute on Monday. The previous record for the one-mile run wearing full fire gear was 7 minutes 58.02 seconds. Corcoran unofficially clocked in at 6 minutes 45 seconds on his brother Greg’s watch, a fellow firefighter who ran alongside him at the Fred d’Elia Memorial Day Ridgewood Run.

You might say Corcoran has been training for this run since age 7, when he ran his first 10-kilometer race in Ridgewood with his Uncle Greg. Since then, he’s competed in marathons, half-marathons, triathlons and Ironman Triathlons — including one half-marathon in March in full firefighter gear that’s soon to become the new world record with 1 hour 48 minutes 24 seconds.

Fast forward to 2001, when he was working as a personal trainer and living in Hoboken. Sept. 11 hit and he realized he wanted to step up for his community.

It’s not easy to set a Guinness World Record but that’s what Ridgewood resident and Fire Lieutenant Brendan Corcoran has done. Not once, but in all likelihood, twice. Corcoran, 37, recently set a new world record for running the fastest half marathon in full firefighter gear at the Michelob Ultra Queens 13.1 on March 21 in an official time of 1:48:24. Stuart Ruston of the United Kingdom set the previous record of 2:00:41 in March of 2013. Corcoran carried 25 pounds of gear on him, as per the official record, which consisted of his firefighter uniform boots, jacket, helmet, and pants.

On May 25, at the Memorial Day Ridgewood Run, Corcoran plans to break the Guinness World Record for running the fastest mile in full gear plus air packs, for a total of 45 pounds. The current Guinness record for fastest mile in a fireman’s uniform is 7 minutes and 58.02 seconds, set in April of 2013 by Ashrita Furman at the Jamaica High School athletics track in New York. Corcoran has already beaten that record in his training for the mile event.

Guinness World Records, known from its inception in 1955 through 1998 as The Guinness Book of Records, is a reference book published annually, listing world records. Sir Hugh Beaver, chairman of the Guinness Brewery in Ireland, created the book when he missed a shot at a golden plover. He wondered if the plover is the fastest game bird in Europe but couldn’t find a reference book that answered the question. So he undertook the task of finding and recording records and his book was created. It is the best selling book in the world.

What does it take to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 up the side of a volcano, and then run a 26.2-mile marathon? Ask Ridgewood resident and Fire Lieutenant Brendan Corcoran, who completed the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii last month. Corcoran battled heat and extreme winds in order to complete the event in just over 10 hours.

Brendan Corcoran completed the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii in just over 10 hours placing him in the top quarter of more than 2,100 racers. At right, he relaxes with his wife, Kate, and daughters Cailin, 4, and baby Keira.

Corcoran secured his spot for the World Championships in Kona, a qualifying event, by placing fifth in his age group at Ironman Mont Tremblant in Canada in August, leaving precious little time to recover and start training again. Qualifying and succeeding in Kona has been a goal of Corcoran’s for years – this was his fifth Ironman event since his inaugural Ironman in 2007.

What got him hooked on the Ironman began in middle school when he was watching sports on television. He saw an Ironman competition and was intrigued with the whole concept, enough that he tucked it in the back of his mind as something he would want to do someday. It took just about 25 years for that dream to become a reality.
