Chris Cerf to Step Down as New Jersey Commissioner of Education
Chris Cerf will be leaving office at the end of this month after three years as Gov. Chris Christie’s education commissioner, leaving behind big changes — and some tumult.
Appointed in late 2010, Cerf yesterday said he will join the educational software company led by his old boss, former New York City schools chancellor Joel Klein.
Cerf, who was deputy chancellor in New York under Klein, will serve as CEO of Amplify Insight, a division of Amplify Inc. The company is owned by News Corp., the media giant led by Rupert Murdoch.
He submitted his resignation earlier this month, effective March 1. No announcement has been made as to Cerf’s successor.
The department is expected to announce the resignation today, but Cerf yesterday confirmed the decision and said it came out of both his uncertainty about staying on for a second term and a job offer that was difficult to pass up. (Mooney/NJSpotlight)
RHS DECA had about 80 students qualify for the next round of competition
One hundred ninety RHS students went to Ramapo College in January and competed in the NJ DECA Regional Competition, consisting of team and individual scenario role-playing and testing, which was conducted prior to the event.
DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.
RHS DECA had about 80 students qualify for the next round of competition. In order to advance students need to place in the top 18 of all students competing in their event, and a student who placed top three on a test or role-play received an extra award for recognition of their accomplishments. In addition, three teams placed in the top 25 in the North Atlantic Region and have been invited to present their stock market portfolio at the International Conference held in Atlanta, Georgia in early May.

High cost of Common Core has states rethinking the national education standards

States are learning the cost of Common Core is uncommonly high.
The federally-backed standards initiative, first proposed by the nation’s governors and an educators’ association, seeks to impose a national standard for achievement among K-12 students. So far, 45 states plus the District of Columbia have signed on, with some implementing curriculum designed for the Common Core Standards Initiative during the current school year and the rest set to take part in the next school year. But several states are reconsidering their participation, and one big reason is the cost.
States will spend up to an estimated $10 billion up front, then as much as $800 million per year for the first seven years that the controversial program is up and running. Much of the cost is on new, Common Core-aligned textbooks and curriculum, but the added expenses also include teacher training, technology upgrades, testing and assessment. The figures are taking states by surprise

Readers comment on Council’s Turn around on Police Recruit Hiring
Yes there was a meeting…. Unfortunately it won’t make the Amigo control news, can’t be printing retractions or acknowledging council actually to blame for mistake. it was very interesting to see the council do such a total 180 from last week. They were actually civil for a change. Maybe because one of the amigos didn’t make it there until the very end.. Residents came forward in unanimous support for Chief Ward slamming several of the council for their conduct towards the chief, for blaming him when it was their mistake and asking for the council to not punish the two young men who are the actual victim’s in this mess.
Even the lone opposition from last week was back peddling from his accusations and called for the two young men to hired.
Thank you Bernie Walsh for acknowledging the mistake was on the part of the council.
The Council agreed in principle to change the Ordinance. The Mayor came in 5 min before the end of the meeting. Nothing concrete said about reissuing the promise of employment to the two young men. As mention at the meeting the Village sent letters to the two candidates residing the promise of employment early this week. So I guess they fix have the problem but the candidates are sill in limbo.
New coffee stand will brew at Ridgewood train station

The Village of Ridgewood is now accepting bids from vendors who are interested in leasing and operating a new coffee stand at the Ridgewood train station, which has been without that particular service since 2009.
The deadline to submit proposals is 11 a.m. Feb. 20, when all public bids will be opened.

Ridgewood NJ, A Toyota Highlander collided with a Toyota Sequoia at the intersection of North Walnut Street and Robinson Lane just prior to the Super Bowl kickoff on Sunday evening.
The Highlander’s driver was transported by ambulance to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood with non life threatening neck & back injuries; the Sequoia’s driver was uninjured. The collision’s force propelled both vehicles head on into immovable objects; the Highlander wound up smashed into a utility pole and the Sequoia wedged against a large tree. Each car sustained heavy front end damage; both were removed by flatbed tow trucks. Air bags deployed in both vehicles during the crash. A stop sign was destroyed in the crash and the utility pole requires replacement.
RIdgewood FD personnel attended to a minor fluid spill resultant from the crash. One summons was issued in connection with the incident; police at the scene did not reveal its nature.

Over the next year, you’ll be hearing more and more about a new district plan that promises to make a dynamic impact on our mission of excellence. Called 1:1 (One to One), it’s an initiative that aims to partner the tools of technology with the skills of our professional educators with the goal of raising student success to new levels.
The 1:1 program planned for Ridgewood is designed to enhance instruction and improve learning by supplying one computer device to every student, for use both in the classroom and at home. This is not a new idea – in fact, two Bergen County high schools have had 1:1 instruction in place for the past eight years. But it is a concept which time has come for the Ridgewood Public Schools.
How does 1:1 differ from the technology already in place in Ridgewood classrooms? A while ago the Board of Education adopted a formal goal to integrate computer technology into our learning environment and as a result, we have longstanding policies and programs in place at this point in time, with numerous computers in our buildings available for use by our students and teaching staff.

Take part in the national initiative “Come Alive Outside” and join Ridgewood Parks and Recreation, Jacobsen Landscape Design and Construction, Ridgewood Fire Department and Eastern Mountain Sports as they create an outstanding winter late afternoon/evening event at Graydon Park and the surrounding parklands. It does prove, that the “Burke vs Abbot’ ruling, by our left leaning Supreme Court, does NOT work.
For those of you unfamiliar, it created “Abbot’ districts which basically guarantee ‘per pupil funding’ in the dumps of Paterson, Newark,Camden, Jersey City etc of an equivalent financial amount as the ‘good’ districts, such as Ridgewood.
Despite pissing away hundreds of millions of dollars since this 1997 ruling, the results speak for themselves.
Ever wonder why roads don’t get fixed? Bridges and other infrastructure fall apart? Its because the “Abbot ruling’ basically drains the state treasury in order to comply.
Very sad because its a failed social experiment and we all pay for it.
Ask a Paterson teacher what is required to satisfactorily complete a year and progress to the next?
Grades? Nope. Just simply ‘attendance’. Your tax dollars at work in the great state of NJ. Or should I say ‘Peoples Republic of NJ, run by liberal Democrats’.
N.J. students in low-income districts struggle on SATs
No seniors at Paterson’s Eastside High School campus last year did well enough on the SATs to meet the College Board’s threshold for being “college ready.”
In Bergen County, 13 percent of Garfield High School seniors who took the SAT hit that benchmark, along with 18 percent of their counterparts atLyndhurst High School, according to the new School Performance Reports released Tuesday.
At a time when helping students become “college ready” is a mantra for New Jersey education officials, a startling share in many poor and moderate-income districts failed to meet the score deemed by the College Board to predict probable success in college — 1,550 points out of a possible 2,400.
That benchmark has been in the spotlight since Camden Schools Superintendent Paymon Rouhanifard used it last month to say it hit him like a “kick in the stomach” to learn that only three students in his city tested as college-ready. Governor Christie jumped on the figure in his recent State of the State speech to argue for his education agenda, including merit pay for teachers and a longer academic day.
The College Board, which administers the SAT, says that students who hit the benchmark have a 65 percent or greater chance of earning at least a B-minus average in their freshman year of college, and are likely to get a degree. Studies show SAT scores are highly correlated with parents’ income and education level.
The SAT is much harder than the state’s graduation exam. Indeed, in 46 of the 71 public high schools in Bergen and Passaic counties, most of the seniors who took the SAT did not hit 1,550. The Bergen County Academies, a selective magnet, fared the best, with 98 percent of its students hitting that target or better.
