Ridgewood Nj, Ridgewood Police report that on Friday, October 16, 2015, a Fairway Road resident reported receiving a telephone call from an individual identifying himself as a representative of the United States Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Unit. The caller stated that victim had “willfully defrauded” the IRS and that the victim would be arrested, have his/her assets frozen and driving privileges/passport revoked if the victim did not wire funds ($4986.45) to an account number provided that was alleged to be an IRS tax payment account.

Numerous incidents of this type of scheme are reported to this agency on a weekly basis. The matter is under investigation by the detective bureau.

This type of scam was also reported by the Glen Rock Police department on Wednesday October 21st.DO NOT provide funds or info to anyone over the phone. Reports of IRS calling residents to collect back due taxes, is a scam.

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Police report that on Sunday, October 11, 2015, a Corsa Terrace resident reported that his/her computer had been hacked resulting in his/her identity being stolen. The victim, who had implemented a program to improve his/her computer’s performance and remove viruses, was contacted by a male caller claiming to represent “Celox Support”. The caller persuaded the victim to allow him remote access to his/her computer and credit card account information.
It is suggested that consumers provide credit card account information only after positively verifying that they are dealing with a legitimate service provider. The Ridgewood Police Department is also aware that this is a very popular scam at this time and residents should always be wary of someone contacting them by phone and offering to “fix” computer problems.

Ridgewood Police Caution Residents to be Weary of “Skimming”

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Police report that on Thursday, October 1, 2015, a Hawthorne resident reported that fraudulent charges were made on his/her credit card account shortly after dining at a Ridgewood restaurant. The victim felt that the server at the restaurant may have skimmed his/her card when it was presented for payment.

Be aware anytime that a credit card leaves your possession there is the possibility that it may be “skimmed”. “Skimming” involves the card being swiped through a small handheld device easily concealed in the palm of one’s hand, that downloads the cardholders account information, which is then utilized for fraudulent purchases.
In some cases, the fraudulent charges are made by using the account number while in others an actual cloned credit card is manufactured using the cardholder’s information. Many times, these schemes occur at restaurants and gas stations where attendants take physical possession of credit cards since the credit cards leave the cardholder’s sight. This matter is under investigation by the detective bureau.
Staff members from the Ridgewood blog recommend using extra caution at , gas stations, restaurants , health care visits and car rentals .

Beware of the ticket blitz: Bergen County eyes drivers, pedestrians in safety push

October is Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month

OCTOBER 6, 2015, 11:10 PM    LAST UPDATED: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2015, 6:54 AM
BY JOHN CICHOWSKI
RECORD COLUMNIST |
THE RECORD

After 45 pedestrian deaths in two years, the Bergen County sheriff, prosecutor and dozens of other public officials gathered in Hackensack on Tuesday to put walkers as well as drivers on notice:

Starting this month, whether on foot or behind the wheel, obey pedestrian laws or expect a ticket.

“I’m asking all police departments to issue summonses even for jaywalking,” Sheriff Michael Saudino announced to a crowd at a news conference on the steps of the county Justice Complex.

The reason: “A week doesn’t go by that I don’t get a phone call about a citizen being struck and killed in our county,” added Prosecutor John Molinelli.

Death counts explain much of this rationale:

A total of 21 lives were lost while crossing county thoroughfares in 2013 (more than double the 2012 count of 9) and 24 more deaths were added in 2014 — the most in at least 16 years, according to state police records. The percentage increases accounted for a higher rate of carnage than the statewide pedestrian death toll, which reached 170 last year, the most since the 2002 count of 176.

“We have to do better,” Saudino said in an interview. “Drivers and pedestrians both need to be better educated, and our engineers have to look closely at some of our roadways to make them safer.”

For two weeks starting now, motorists will begin seeing “Focus here” billboards that picture a family at a crosswalk alongside a photo of a phone that accompanies this slogan — “Not here.”

This campaign strives to:

  • Motivate drivers to look for and stop for pedestrians.
  • Motivate pedestrians to use crosswalks and designated crossing locations.
  • Educate pedestrians about, and encourage the proper use of, pedestrian signals.
  • Encourage pedestrians to make themselves more visible in the dark, by wearing reflective clothing or carrying a flashlight.
