Over sized Load backs up traffic and delays Valley Hospital  paramedic unit
July 17,2015
the staff of the Ridgewood blogRidgewood NJ, Yesterday Two (2) tractor trailers, each carrying over sized loads consisting of prefabricated structures, caused major traffic jams in Ridgewood on Friday morning, 07/17 after one (1) of the trucks snagged a set of overhead wires on North Maple Avenue resulting in a section of that road being closed for almost two (2) hours.

Fortunately, phone and cable TV service to only one (1) home was affected, but while Ridgewood PD officers analyzed how they could escort the troublesome trucks out of town without causing additional wires to be taken down, traffic began to build as a result of the road closure. Officers eventually settled upon a route used by a previous segment of the truck caravan, and both trucks were seen crossing the border into Paramus shortly after 12 noon. No injuries were reported during the incident.

One more serious issue a paramedic unit from The Valley Hospital was delayed responding to a life threatening emergency call in Paramus as a result of getting caught in one (1) of the traffic jams caused by the incident.

Village Hall: the economic demographics of Ridgewood make this a highly attractive town for burglaries

Village of Ridgewood – E-Notice – Thursday, 09 July 2015

Dear E-Notice Residents,

Early this week we had a burglary on the west side of town – last week we had one as well. I wanted to drop everyone a note as a reminder as to how we best protect ourselves; the economic demographics of Ridgewood make this a highly attractive town for burglaries but there are many things that we can do together to deter this.

First and foremost if you see anything or anyone suspicious please call our Police Department. Look out for your neighbors. Also, try to make your home look like it’s occupied – for example, take your newspapers in, try not to leave dry cleaning on your front door, leave a car in the driveway, and put your lights, tv and/or radio on timers so they are on during the proper times. Also, please make sure that your doors are locked. If you have two sets of doors, i.e. a storm/screen door and a regular entry door insure both are locked – locking just the screen door (which tends to be easier to force open) is not sufficient. Close and lock your garage door; one of our burglaries recently was the theft of a bicycle out of a garage. In fact we have had a significant number of bike thefts so putting bicycles away is a good idea as well. When you are leaving your home for an extended period of time, you can call our Police Department and let them know. Also, if you leave your car outside, please make sure that nothing of value is visible within the car and that it is locked – entering a car and stealing is common and can largely be avoided.

I am by no means minimizing the level of burglaries in Ridgewood this year but the metrics indicate that this is similar to last year. We have had 9 residential burglaries and 3 attempts this year versus 10 last year during the same time frame. We remain a very safe community with a top notch law enforcement capability.

In the last two weeks the two west side burglaries were in the Old Country Club area, and last fall we saw a number of burglaries on the east side of our Village. We see this concentration of activity in a particular area for a time and then it seems to shift to another section of town or other municipalities. The Police Department is actively investigating these crimes and they are a priority.

Have a safe, relaxing and wonderful summer, Roberta

Best regards,

Roberta

Ridgewood Police Responded to a Whooping 427 calls between June 24th and July 1st

July2,2015
the staff of the Ridgewood blogRidgewood NJ, Between Wednesday June 24, 2015 and Wednesday July 1, 2015 the Ridgewood Police Department responded to (427) Calls for Service (30) trauma/medical emergency calls and (17) motor vehicle accidents.
Ridgewood Police had a very busy week :On Thursday June 25, 2015 Officers Colin Donnelly and Joseph DiBenedetto were dispatched to the Central Business District on the report of a disturbance. Upon their arrival they observed a male actor who fit the description provided by the caller later identified as Fransisco A. Andino, 23 of Newark, New Jersey sitting on the sidewalk at Van Neste Square and East Ridgewood Avenue. As the officers were speaking with Andino they were notified that there was an active warrant for his arrest out of Hoboken, New Jersey, for assaulting a police officer. Andino who attempted to flee the area on foot was subdued and placed under arrest by Patrolman Colin Donnelly after a brief foot chase. While at police headquarters Andino assaulted several officers by biting, kicking and spitting at them. He was subsequently charged with obstructing administration of law (2C:29-1A), resisting arrest (2C:29A(3)(a)), disorderly conduct (2C:33-2(a)(1)) and three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer (2C:12-B(5)(a). Bail was set at $15,000, Andino was housed at the Bergen County Sheriff’s Unit at Bergen Regional Medical Center.During the late afternoon hours on Thursday June 25, 2015, a resident reported observing a group of juveniles acting suspiciously near a vacant home. It was later determined that the homeowners were away on vacation and it was the groups intent to congregate on the property unsupervised without the homeowner’s permission. Annually with the onset of summer and vacations commencing this has become a frequent problem, residents are asked to report suspicious activities in their neighborhoods in order to prevent similar behavior.

On Thursday Friday June 26, 2015 a pedestrian crossing East Ridgewood Avenue while in a marked crosswalk reported that she/he was nearly struck a by a vehicle that failed to yield right of way. The driver pulled to the side of the roadway exiting their vehicle entering into a verbal dispute with the pedestrian. The pedestrian reported being assaulted by the driver who left the area prior to the arrival of police. The operator of the vehicle later responded to the Ridgewood Police Headquarters where she reported being assaulted by the pedestrian. Neither party wished to pursue the matter. It is paramount that all drivers cede right of way to pedestrians in the roadway regardless of whether a crosswalk is present as per the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Laws.

On Monday June 29, 2015 Detective Jeffrey Casson arrested Francis J. Yacopino, 30, of West Milford, New Jersey on a criminal warrant out of Pennsylvania. The warrant was discovered during a background check of Yacopino who had applied for a job with the Village of Ridgewood. Yacopino was housed in the Bergen County Jail on a fugitive warrant pending extradition.

On Monday June 29, 2015 a resident reported that his/her personal information had been used to open a fraudulent Dish Network account, the resident further reported having been the victimized similarly numerous times over the last several years. This type of incident continues to be on the rise and information on prevention and reporting identity theft occurrences is available at the police department.

During the spring months numerous street signs have been removed from roadways in the village. In addition to being both a nuisance and financial burden, the removal of these signs (including traffic signage) creates a danger to the public. Citizens are asked to exercise vigilance in reporting these incidents to police as well assisting in the recovery of stolen signs.

Please remember to register your house and any emergency contacts with the Police Department Records Division when you are planning to go away.

A reminder : All criminal defendants are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

New look at Tasers after police shootings in North Jersey

THE RECORD

With three fatal shootings involving police in Bergen County within the past month, attention has turned again to stun guns as an alternative to the use of deadly force by officers. But the devices, which incapacitate suspects with a temporary electronic pulse, remain unavailable to most police agencies in the county, and in the state as a whole.

New Jersey, the final state in the country to approve the use of stun guns by police, has guidelines and procedures that stun-gun advocates say have become less rigid but are still more stringent than those of other states.

As a result, the process of rolling the devices out to law enforcement agencies across the state is progressing, but slowly, officials say.

After a series of revisions since it first introduced a guideline for stun guns, the state has gradually eliminated several hurdles for police departments to issue the devices to officers, said Steve Tuttle, a spokesman for Taser International, the company that manufactures the stun guns used by agencies in New Jersey.

Today, 168 departments in New Jersey — a state with more than 500 municipalities and 21 counties — have issued Tasers to officers, he said.

Ridgewood Businesses Report Suspicious Phone Calls threatening Collections

phone-scam

June 12,2015

the staff of the Ridgewood blog, the Ridgewood Police and PSE&G

Ridgewoood NJ, Ridgewood Police report that on Friday June 5, 2015, a business in Ridgewood received (4) suspicious telephone calls from a party identifying themselves as a representative of Public Service Electric and Gas. The caller informed the business owner that they were delinquent paying their bill and threatened to turn off the service to that address if they failed to provide them with MoneyPak cards valued at $569.00. Upon verifying that the call was fraudulent the business owner notified the Ridgewood Police Department. This type of fraudulent call has been on the upswing with the calls frequently originating from outside of the United States. Homeowners and business owners alike should beware of suspicious callers and know that Public Service and other local utilities do not collect unpaid bills in this manner.

PSE&G warns customers about such scams :

Beware of suspicious activity and trust your instincts. If you think you may have been the victim of a scam, please call our 24-hour customer service center at 1-800-436-PSEG (7734). You may also contact your local police department.

Phone scams
Residential and small business customers have reported receiving deceptive phone calls from individuals pretending to be PSE&G employees. The callers demand that customers make a payment within hours using a Green Dot Money Pak, a type of pre-paid card available at pharmacies and convenience stores. PSE&G does not accept these cards.

PSE&G offers a variety of payment options, and would never require a customer to use one specific type of payment. PSE&G customers scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment receive written notice on their bill at least 10 days in advance.

Any customer who has doubts about the legitimacy of a call from PSE&G — especially one in which payment is requested — should call us directly at 1-800-436-PSEG (7734).

Email scams
A PSE&G customer has reported receiving a fraudulent email that looked like a bill from the utility. A number of other utilities, including PSEG Long Island, have reported similar scams. The emails contain a link that when clicked infect the customer’s computer with a virus or malware.

The utility is urging its customers to be wary of these types of suspicious emails. Bills sent by PSE&G to our customers via email would be sent from [email protected]. PSE&G would not ask its customers to provide personal information online without first logging into MyAccount.

If you receive this type of email, do not provide any personal information, do not download any attachments, and do not click on any links in the email.

Imposters at your door
Residential customers have reported incidents of strangers posing as PSE&G employees to gain access to their home or to lure them out of their house.
Ask for identification from anyone who comes to your door looking like a PSE&G employee. If you are not satisfied, don’t let the person into your house. Call 911 if you feel intimidated or threatened.

All PSE&G employees — meter readers, servicewomen and men, and office workers — always wear a badge that tells you who we are. The badge, or identification card (ID for short), should look like the ID pictured above. It has the employee’s name, photograph and the PSE&G logo on it.

If you are not sure of an employee’s identity or have difficulty with the badges, call us at 1-800-436-PSEG (7734). A service representative can verify that an employee has been dispatched to your premises.

Chief John M. Ward thanks all those who helped safely defuse confrontation yesterday

June 6,2015
Chief John M. Ward and the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, In response yesterdays stand off  situation Chief John Ward issued the following statement on facebook , ” I would like to once again thank our officers for doing an excellent job containing the situation and Sheriff Saudino, Under Sheriff Shortway and Members of the County Regional SWAT, Bomb Squad and Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office for another successful joint effort.

Members of our (ERT) Emergency Response Team integrated with county team members flawlessly. Officers from Glen Rock surrounding towns also provided valuable assistance. Without this type of team work and commitment to integrated training events, incidents such as these become very difficult and may not go as well as they have.

Fortunately the young man was ultimately taken into custody and the matter ended without incident or injury. I would also like to thank Chief Benjamin Ramos and the members of the Palisades Park Police for the work on this case and on scene assistance during the event.
Unfortunately we did have to shut down a portion of S. Maple Ave and evacuate many residents for safety concerns. The young man is at Bergen Regional medical center being evaluated and charges are pending. The matter is under investigation.

I would also like to mention and thank Chief Van Goor and Ridgewood Fire, Ridgewood OEM Director Kleiman and Ridgewood ES. With their assistance Capt. Lyons and I were able to handle our responsibilities with both tactical command and Unified Command for the other support services.”
