RIDGEWOOD — The Village Council recently approved spending more than $18,000 to upgrade the camera and audio systems for the Police Department’s interview room.
The current system that documents police interrogations was recently determined to be faulty, Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld told Ridgewood’s council last week.
Remember to remove all ice and snow from your vehicle before driving, especially from the hood, windows and roof. It’s the law in New Jersey! Motorists who fail to do so face fines of $25 to $75 for each offense, regardless of whether the ice and snow is dislodged from the vehicle. If flying ice or snow causes property damage or injury to others, motorists face fines of $200 to $1,000 for each offense. There are approximately 500 fatalities in the United States per year due to icy road conditions.
Ridgewood NJ, Since the Ridgewood blog had come up more than once in the last few civility meetings Mayor Aronsohn and Jan Philips reached out to us for an invite so we updated our Last Will and Testaments and graciously accepted .The meetings of the Civility Round Table are held on Tuesday’s, once a month at 7:30 PM in the Ridgewood Village Hall Senior’s Lounge. Residents are encouraged to attend .
The meeting started promptly at 7:30 and was to my mind well attended given the time of the year . Jan Phelps hosted the meeting , with Mayor Aronsohn and Councilwomen Hauck . Everyone introduced themselves representing various groups and organizations in the Village , from the BOE , the Planing Board , the Ridgewood Library ,several local clergy , the HSA’s , RBSA and may other fine organizations that serve Ridgewood as well as a few residents . The purpose as stated by the Mayor is to create a more civil discourse in the Village .
Civility is about more than just politeness, although politeness is a necessary first step. It is about disagreeing without disrespect, seeking common ground as a starting point for dialogue about differences, listening past one’s preconceptions, and teaching others to do the same. Civility is the hard work of staying present even with those with whom we have deep-rooted and fierce disagreements. It is political in the sense that it is a necessary prerequisite for civic action. But it is political, too, in the sense that it is about negotiating interpersonal power such that everyone’s voice is heard, and nobody’s is ignored. https://www.instituteforcivility.org/who-we-are/what-is-civility/
The group seemed to agree that Ridgewood is a town where people like to excel , and that drive and those expectations create a very passionate , as you can see from blog comments and opinionated populace . People care about their community and thats a good thing , but many felt that sometimes we all go a bit to far .
We looked at the causes of incivility , the when and why .Sheila Brogan long time BOE member , felt that todays parents had a lot of additional pressure and worried that in todays world their kids would have a hard time doing as well as they have done . She went on to speak about the changing times and how one could expect to have several careers over a life time ,all this she though made being a parent a lot harder than it was in the past and a lot more pressure .
We managed to go till 8:08 be for someone mentioned the elephant in the room, “I want to talk about the blog”…….
I learned a lot , mostly that I am glad I can sit in my PJ’s drinking coffee writing a blog getting yelled at by anonymous commenters ,and don’t have a tuff job like the RBSA people who are pulled in many directions ,by so many demands all at once .
There were interestingly a surprising large amount of blog enthusiasts there some open and some secret admirers .
While I could see there were some sore spots , like turf fields , PSEG ,sports issues , Valley Hospital , the Village Hall renovation and alas Marty Brooks the daggers were lowered for the night .
While anonymity of blog posters took a hit as expected some pointed out that even on facebook were you know who everyone is the comments can be even nastier . A resident put it down to a type of “keyboard bravado.”

RIDGEWOOD — Two cousins, one of them a member of the United States Marine Corps, were accused by authorities on Tuesday of firing bullets into an empty church two times late last year, incidents that police said left the community on edge and led to stepped up patrols.
Joseph Galli, 21, of Somerville and Alex Norrell, 22, of Ridgewood both have been arrested on charges related to firing more than 40 rounds of ammunition into the Old Paramus Church on East Glen Avenue on Nov. 16 and Dec. 26, authorities said during a news conference to announce the arrests. Authorities said they believe that the men used the church as a target only because it is convenient and isolated from other buildings.
Galli, a Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, allegedly did the shooting on both occasions, according to Chief John Ward of the Ridgewood police. He was arrested in North Carolina on Monday and is expected to be extradited to Bergen County, authorities said.

THE RECORD
RIDGEWOOD — Authorities investigating Sunday morning’s firing of dozens of shots at Old Paramus Reformed Church — site of a sharp Revolutionary War battle — reported no new information on the case Monday.
No injuries were reported and the motive is unknown; no threats have been reported against the church or its pastor, the Reverend Rob Miller, according to police.

Shots were fired into a stained glass window of The Old Paramus Reformed Church. A bullet also left a hole in the building’s brick.
Miller could not be reached for comment Monday on the firing of at least 30 shots into the building, which the pastor has said occurred before morning services and resulted in damage, including holes through stained glass windows.
The church grounds occupy a prominent place in Bergen County’s Revolutionary era history: More than two centuries ago, many more shots were fired on the site as British and American forces clashed in bloody combat.
A different church, built in 1735, occupied the property then. Partly because of the war’s toll, that church was dismantled and replaced in 1800 by the one that stands today. The church and cemetery are a registered historic district. British and American soldiers are believed to be buried on the ground.

Ridgewood Police remind Drivers to Drive Sober or get Pulled Over
While your out enjoying a holiday party Ridgewood Police Officers will be out on extra patrol looking for impaired drivers. We would like you to enjoy your party and get home safely. If you intend to consume alcohol please follow our advice.
Take mass transit, a taxi or ask a sober friend to drive you home.
Spend the night rather than get behind the wheel.
Report impaired drivers to law enforcement. In New Jersey, drivers may dial #77 to report a drunk or aggressive driver.
Always buckle up, every ride, regardless of your seating position in the vehicle. It’s your best defense against an impaired driver.
If you’re intoxicated and traveling on foot, the safest way to get home is to take a cab or have a sober friend or family member drive or escort you to your doorstep
Glen Rock and Ridgewood have experienced a raise of forced entry break ins between the hours of 10am to 3pm
HOME BURGLARY Update:Glen Rock & Ridgewood have experienced increase of forced entry to homes between the hours of 10am -3pm . There are no suspects as of yet
The West side of Glen Rock & West side of Ridgewood have been experiencing an increase in residential burglaries. These break-ins are occurring during the daytime, generally between 10 AM and 3 PM and have been into homes where no one is present, It is possible that the actors are ringing the doorbell and watching the homes prior to entry.
At this time there are no suspects or suspect vehicle information.
Please do everything possible to make your home look occupied when you are out. Keep the radio or TV on, a car in the driveway and lights on timers, as it gets dark early. Consider an alarm and if you have one, make sure it is armed before you go out.
Suspects don’t want to confront anyone. They just want to get in & out quickly.
With the holidays upon us, there is generally more to steal in a home, so try to keep expensive items secured or well hidden. The bedroom is the first place a burglar will look.
We need your help! If you see anything suspicious, out of the ordinary or unusual, call the police immediately. Don’t hesitate or wait. We would rather check out something that turns out to be nothing, then investigate another home that was burglarized.
Thank you for your help and have a healthy and safe holiday season.

RIDGEWOOD — The burglar smashed a first-floor window of a village residence with a large rock, then — with security alarms blaring and lights glaring — he dashed up the stairs into a guest bedroom and grabbed an armload of Tiffany jewelry and heirloom baby toys before escaping in what is believed to be a dark-colored pickup truck, according to police.
But there was something the burglar — still unidentified Tuesday — may not have been counting on in Friday’s break-in: The homeowners had “a really elaborate security system,” said Detective Douglas Williams, and as a result, police have clear pictures and video footage of him as he tried the front door and pressed his ear against it to determine if anyone was home.
Once he decided the coast was clear, Williams said, the burglar broke in, activating the alarm sirens and turning on the lights in the home.
With the alarm activated, he barely had time to run into the one bedroom and dash back down the stairs, Williams said, and he had no time to ransack other rooms in search of valuables.
The detective said the security video also shows the pickup truck circling the block just before the burglary. He said it appeared to be a late model, full-size pickup, possibly with an extended cab.
