What happened to N.J. watershed management?

>What happened to N.J. watershed management?

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2011
BY RICHARD R. PARDI
THE RECORD

ABOUT five years ago, New Jersey, in response to a cycle of flooding and drought, instituted an ambitious plan of watershed management.

Since every resident in the state lives in a watershed, it was a matter of dividing the state into manageable areas. There are 20 delineated watershed areas. Some watershed areas, such as the Passaic River, are so large they are divided into three areas.

The Department of Environmental Protection was to have a representative in each of the watersheds (one DEP representative may cover more than one area), a utility (sewerage authority, water authority, gas and electric company), health departments, environmental commissions, academic institutions, community parks groups and public interest citizens. Management of each watershed had four components: public advisory, open space, technical advisory and education and outreach. It was one of the best ideas put forward by our state.

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

For the ninth year in a row, the Ridgewood Public Library is bringing the latest cutting-edge documentaries to the village. Reel Voices Film Festival organizer Roberta Panjwani has been viewing movies both in person and on DVDs all year to select just the right mix for her audience.

“They all have a common thread of social justice, of a larger issue being seen through an individual experience,” she said. This year she saw more than 40 films before selecting five that she is confident will please the audience.

At the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, she viewed as many documentaries as possible to test how they screened with a live audience. “A lot look great on paper but not after seeing them,” she noted. “And others were really good, but some not quite right for the Ridgewood audience.”

“Smash & Grab” Vehicle Break-Ins Increase Near County Bike Path
by Boyd Loving

A recent increase of “smash and grab” vehicle break-ins near the Saddle River County Bike Path has thus far baffled members of the Ridgewood and Bergen County Police Departments.

The most recent occurrence was reported at approximately 6:00 PM on Saturday when vehicle owner returned to her car and found the front passenger side window smashed out, and her purse missing.

Responding Ridgewood PD personnel Sgt. Brian Pullman, Patrol Officer Kyle Finch, and Patrol Officer Ricky Thomas found several discarded purses in a nearby trash dumpster during the subsequent investigation.  It is unknown what, if any, personal contents were recovered with the purses.

When leaving your vehicle unattended, purses, wallets, computers, cell phones, GPS devices, etc. should be removed from plain sight and locked securely in the vehicle’s trunk or hidden storage compartment.  Vehicles should always be locked when left unattended.

>America’s longest-held POW is honored

>America’s longest-held POW is honored

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2011
SPECIAL TO TWIN-BORO NEWS
TWIN-BORO NEWS

The new running track at Bergenfield High School has been dedicated to the memory of Col. Floyd “Jim” Thompson, the Bergenfield native who became the longest-held prisoner of war in U.S. history.

Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Kuchar and Principal James Fasano welcomed guests and led the ceremony on the main field of the school at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16.

Members of the Bergenfield Board of Education, Veterans Advisory Committee, borough officials and many BHS students were present at the dedication ceremony.

The dedication was intentionally scheduled for the third Friday in September, which is recognized as National POW/MIA Recognition Day.

Thompson, a member of the Bergenfield High School Class of 1951, was America’s longest-held POW, having spent nearly nine years in captivity in Vietnam.

>Incident that occurred at Somerville School on September 27

>September 27, 2011

Dear Ridgewood Parent or Guardian,

Today at  Somerville Elementary School a male adult  was observed on the back field of  the school  at lunchtime. It appeared that this man was holding a camera and possibly taking photographs in the direction of the children playing on the field.

Adults who were supervising the children observed this activity and immediately reported the incident to Principal Lorna Oates-Santos, who in turn notified the Ridgewood police. At this time the police are investigating the incident.

I am writing to assure you that the safety of the children is always the top priority of Ridgewood Public School officials. Any incident that might jeopardize that safety is taken very seriously and thoroughly investigated. Please do not hesitate to report any suspicious activity to your school principal, and encourage your children to do the same.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Daniel Fishbein, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools

Ridgewood Planning Board continues debate on village fast food ordinance
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2011
BY JOSEPH CRAMER

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

The Ridgewood Planning Board went back for seconds on the issue of amending the village’s fast food ordinance at Tuesday’s public meeting.

Planners addressed the importance of moving beyond the negative stigma the ordinance’s name carries.

“I think we get hung up on the words ‘fast food,'” said Mayor Keith Killion.

The idea of amending the existing fast food ordinance, which currently prohibits fast food entirely in the downtown area’s B-1 zone and permits it with conditions in the B-2 zone, was revived at a board meeting in August by Village Planner Blais Brancheau with the intent that applicants currently prohibited under existing ordinance could potentially fill some of the vacant storefronts in Ridgewood’s Central Business District (CBD).

Ridgewood High School football game moved to Don Bosco

“The artificial turf fields have continued to be plagued by excessive “clean-up” costs. RHS sports programs are suffering as work continues to repair the latest storm damage from flooding. On several occasions I have called upon the BOE, as the field owner, to join with the Village, sports boasters and neighbors and see what can be done to resolve this continual cycle of flood damage, field closure and expensive repair. I am sure that intelligent, creative parties working together in good faith can devise solutions. Unfortunately, the BOE and the superintendent have ignored this offer of cooperation. Please BOE, do not miss this opportunity.

Jim Morgan”

Attached is a letter from Dr. Fishbein announcing that the RHS/DonBosco game has been moved to Mahwah. The letter appears on the District website : https://tinyurl.com/4xob956

>Valley Renewal : The Time is Now

>
The Time is Now

The Valley Hospital has met the healthcare needs of Ridgewood residents because of more than 50 years of periodic reinvestment.

Renewal is focused on modernization of existing facilities, not on adding more hospital beds. The emphasis is on critical new standards like the creation of single-patient rooms, larger operating rooms, and diagnostic facilities to accommodate new technology and evolving healthcare practices. Just like the important investments we make in our schools to preserve their effectiveness, healthcare facilities must evolve. Without doing so, Valley will experience a noticeable deterioration and likely become a hospital you would no longer choose for you and your family.

In short, the highly capable, award-winning hospital that Ridgewood has proudly called its own for more than half a century would, over time, no longer be capable of providing the level of care everyone expects of it. The time to renew is now.

Quality Patient Care and Service
The Valley Hospital now faces the question of how to preserve its ability to provide quality healthcare services in a time of rapid change. Implementing medical and surgical technology advancements of recent years requires more space, meaning larger operating rooms and diagnostic procedure areas.

Renewal also means more space for our patients. The single greatest square footage increase of the plan calls for single-patient rooms, which have become the state-mandated healthcare standard for new healthcare construction. (This standard was devised by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and included the contributions of physicians, nurse, and other professionals). Currently, the average room in the Phillips Building is approximately 200 square feet and accommodates two patients. Rooms under Renewal will be approximately 275 square feet but will be dedicated to just one patient. Click through to view image.

Research indicates that single-patient rooms provide greater privacy, a reduced rate of hospital-acquired infections, fewer medication errors, fewer sleep disturbances and greater involvement of family members in a loved one’s recovery. Overall, patients cared for in single-patient rooms have far better clinical outcomes.
Why Renew?

If Valley had not been able to update itself at pivotal times in the past, we would not be the hospital we are today; Valley would have fallen dangerously behind. This is, again, one of those pivotal times. Our situation is analogous to education and our local schools. Improvements to facilities, technology and new standards in the schools is of the utmost importance, and is routinely supported by our community. The Valley Hospital is no different.

The residents of Ridgewood and the surrounding community deserve the highest level of care, access to advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technology and comfortable single-patient rooms in which to recuperate.

To ensure Valley’s future ability to care for you, your family, and all residents of Ridgewood, the Hospital must renew.

CLEANUP OF GYPSY POND October 2nd

“Hey folks, Gypsy Pond is in Ridgewood, sure anyone who wants to organize another cleanup, let me know! Gypsy Pond is located directly off the Rock Road extension; adjoining the rr tracks, there will be signs.

Would love more folks to organize cleanups of all our ponds, etc. Let me know your name, and we’ll be happy to work with you.

In a couple of hours, a group of volunteers, with the Village’s help and equipment, can do wonders.

We all live in the community, lets all help to clean it up.

The only caveat: if you are cleaning waterways, etc that belong to the Village, you actually do need permission, and then you get equipment (bags, rakes, and pickups) from the Village which is more than willing to help out. “

>"It’s the economy again, stupid": New Jersey Legislature turns focus on new job-related bills

>“It’s the economy again, stupid”: New Jersey Legislature turns focus on new job-related bills

After a year in which budget battles, benefits changes, and Atlantic City revitalization have dominated Statehouse politics, an old issue is re-emerging as a renewed priority.

As former President Bill Clinton’s campaign might have said: It’s the economy again, stupid.
New Jersey politicians argue they have never stopped worrying about unemployment as they tackled other issues. But in the past two weeks, a chorus of federal and state officials have started focusing on jobs, issuing multiple proposals to stimulate the economy.

State Senate committees are scheduled to begin working on nearly a dozen jobs-related bills today.
The renewed activity comes as the economy continues to sputter more than two years after the national recession officially ended in June 2009.  (Froonjian, Press of Atlantic City)

>48% See No Further Need for Labor Unions, 30% Disagree

>48% See No Further Need for Labor Unions, 30% Disagree
Friday, September 16, 2011

Half of American Adults (48%) think labor unions have outlasted their usefulness, but there’s a sharp difference of opinion between Republicans and Democrats on the question.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that only 30% disagree and say that unions have not outlived their role. Twenty-one percent (21%) are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

These findings are consistent with attitudes found two years ago.  At that time, 45% said labor unions actually make America weaker, while 26% believed they make the country stronger and 13% said they have no impact.

Yet while 68% of Republicans and 54% of adults not affiliated with either of the major political parties believe unions have outlived their usefulness, 52% of Democrats still see a need for them.

Among working Americans who do not belong to a union, just 13% would like to join a labor union where they work. That’s up slightly from nine percent in March 2009.  Seventy-eight percent (78%) would not like to join a union.
