Paterson NJ, Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal and the Division on Civil Rights announced today that a North Jersey housing cooperative and its property management contractor will pay a former tenant $20,000 to resolve allegations they unlawfully tried to evict her and her daughter over an emotional support dog who aided the daughter following her father’s death.

The Brooks-Sloate Terrace Cooperative Association of Paterson and its property management contractor – Colonial Mutual Housing Corp. – must also develop and distribute a written anti-discrimination policy for the cooperative. Among other things, the policy must contain clear protocols for requesting an exception to the cooperative’s “no pets” policy for emotional support animals.

Reader says, ” It doesn’t take very long before they notice the rotting spell of greed and personal ambition”

We have lots of intelligent residents who lead and operate successful businesses. The problem is, we have to wait for them to retire so they could take a volunteer or paid position with Ridgewood. In the meantime people who have no experience and no knowledge of anything rush to see their names and faces in print. Some, like Knudsen, have been unable to realize she is no longer Mayor and keeps sending out “important announcements” before our current Mayor. Maybe this is requested help, and then I apologize. But her notices always preceded his by only a few minutes.

New Jersey serious structural deficit can lead to a unsustainable fiscal situation

Trenton NJ, according to the PEW policy institute ,even in the aftermath of two recessions, most states amassed sufficient revenue between fiscal years 2003 and 2017 to cover their expenses. But total revenue in 10 states fell short, jeopardizing their long-term fiscal flexibility and pushing off to future taxpayers some past costs for operating government and providing services.

New Jersey Issues What Can be Called the ,” Terrorism Protection Directive “

9/11 wtc

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Trenton NJ, New Jersey Attorney General Grewal has issued a statewide directive curtailing state and local police participation in Federal Civil Immigration Enforcement – “Immigrant Trust Directive” Designed to Promote Public Safety by Building Trust Between Police and Immigrant Communities.

In November 2018, the State of New Jersey issued new rules designed to strengthen trust between law enforcement officers and immigrant communities. The rules limit the types of assistance that New Jersey state and local law enforcement officers may provide to federal immigration authorities, including ICE.

For example, under the new rules, a New Jersey police officer may not stop, question, arrest, search, or detain an individual simply because the officer thinks that the individual might be undocumented. In addition, police officers cannot ask about an individual’s immigration status except in the rare cases when that information is relevant to a specific criminal investigation.

Reader says municipal tax revenue levels are unsustainable

for sale Ridgewood_Real_Estate_theRodgewopodblog

Given SALT deductions are now limited to $10,000 for property taxes, shouldn’t the Council and BOE be aware that the vast majority of Ridgewood residents have seen an effective tax INCREASE and be looking for ways to reduce the burden? Realized sales values suggest home values will need to decline in the next assessment, so unless they jack up the mill rate, municipal tax revenue levels are unsustainable?

Reader says The value of my house since 2005 has gone down and overall high end values have been reduced 10-30%

for sale Ridgewood_Real_Estate_theRodgewopodblog

file photo by Boyd Loving

As a long time resident of Ridgewood my observation is that we are sinking fast and no one is working to save things. The value of my house since 2005 has gone down and overall high end values have been reduced 10-30%. Real numbers we paid 2.5m in 2005 rebuilt the entire house for an added cost of almost 1m and recently appraised at 1.7m and can’t sell it. This when taxes have gone from 27k to over 40k. The schools have eroded, the village is in shabby shape in many places, the commute to NYC assuming a village resident can get a parking spot after 6:45am is awful requiring a dreaded switch (no direct trains).
Really a shame and a study in how weak and inexperienced leadership can really drive down a community. We keep electing lightweights to village, school, and other positions and expect change.
Look for my house. Is is one of many with a for sale sign out front. Real sad but really time to go
