Ridgewood NJ, 2016-2017 Community Outreach Program Series Continues on November 16.The Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment Department is again offering free presentations for parents and guardians throughout the 2016-2017 school year on the topic of children’s well-being.

Next up is There and Back with motivational speaker Ken Bartolo. This program will be held at the GWMS auditorium Wednesday, November 16, 2016 7:00 – 9:00 PM George Washington Middle School Auditorium 155 Washington Place.

“There and Back” is the chilling story of two-time, all-county and collegiate football and lacrosse star, Ken Bartolo. While shining in both sports at Jamesville-Dewitt High School, Ken’s addiction began, costing him scholarship offers from colleges and universities across the east coast. Ken shares the story of his 27 years of substance abuse, leading to the incredible story of his recovery. This presentation is a brutally honest look at the violence and insanity of the world of addiction and how it can destroy the lives of the most promising of our youth. Ultimately, it is a story of hope. With strength, dedication and undying faith in himself, Ken conquered decades of addiction to alcohol, prescription and illicit drugs. His message is meant to encourage today’s youth to believe that, with faith in themselves, anything is possible.

Housing applications on hold in Ridgewood

CBD high density housing

Mark Krulish , Staff Writer, @Mark_Krulish12:02 a.m. EST November 16, 2016

The hearings for proposed housing developments in Ridgewood’s downtown have ground to a halt in the wake of a Superior Court judge’s ruling to issue a temporary stay while matters in a related lawsuit are resolved.

The Planning Board had been set to resume testimony Tuesday evening regarding The Dayton, a 93-unit luxury apartment complex with some affordable units mixed in, slated for the former Brogan Cadillac site on South Broad Street. However, that application has been continued to Dec. 20, Planning Board Attorney Christopher Martin said Tuesday.

Bamboozled: Does your town charge a hidden fee for some online property tax payments?

Many municipalities allow residents to pay their property taxes online.

But at least two New Jersey municipalities aren’t disclosing the fees that are charged to certain online taxpayers.

The lack of disclosure is a big problem.

Josh Needle of Fanwood said he tried to make an online payment on Aug. 1, the date his property taxes were due.

The system gave the option of paying by credit card or by e-check. He chose the e-check.

Needle said a pop-up message warned there was a $1.05 convenience fee.

Ridgewood NJ, The annual Ridgewood Emergency Services fund driver letter has been mailed to all residents and business in the village and is seeking the community’s financial support to ensure it is able to provide emergency assistance to the village 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the year.

The volunteers willingly respond to all types of critical situations the village faces, including snowstorms, hurricanes, floods, power outages and medical emergencies. The squad also stands by at village events including street fairs, the car show, Memorial Day and July 4 th festivities, high school football games and more.

With your financial support, this past year brought a lot of advances in RES patient care. RES was able to purchase CPAP devices (advanced continuous positive airway pressure devices, which can help patients with breathing problems), LUCAS automatic chest compression devices (for more effective CPR), and power lift stretchers (to reduce the occurrences of backinjuries) are equipment that your donations purchased.

RES also maintains 25 public access defibrillators in the Village. The department has responded to over 1704 requests thus far in 2016, which equates to over 15,804 cumulative volunteer hours.

“Please consider supporting our organization with a financial contribution so that the community can continue to count on the volunteers to respond to all of its needs,” said Director and Chief Tony Lillo.

Please make checks payable to F.O.R.E.S.T. (Friends of Ridgewood Emergency Services Teams), 131 North Maple Ave Ridgewood NJ 07450. Online at www.ridgewood911.org. F.O.R.E.S.T. is a charitable organization under IRS section 501(c) (3) so all contributions are tax deductible.

Reader says Pedestrians Cut your risk factor by wearing bright colored clothing

Pedestrian Struck On Goffle Road in Ridgewood

file photo by Boyd Loving

Cut your risk factor by wearing bright colored clothing. “New York Black” may make you look slimmer, but walking or jogging in anything other than bright sunlight while wearing black astronomically increases your risk of getting whacked by a vehicle. If insist on wearing all black, for whatever asinine reason that might be, carry a high visibility safety vest in your briefcase/purse and put it on just before you get off the bus/train and start the walk home. Also a good thing to carry to a shopping center parking lot. In Europe, it’s common to see pedestrians wearing high visibility clothing. What’s wrong with us in this country that black is the only color some people will wear outside?

Night delight: ‘supermoon’ to grace Earth’s skies

wolfman

By Irene Klotz
Reuters November 11, 2016

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Reuters) – The largest, brightest full moon in nearly seven decades will be on display in the coming days, promising Earth-bound sky-watchers a celestial “supermoon” spectacle.

The full moon will come nearer to Earth than at any time since 1948, astronomers said. At closest approach, which occurs at 6:23 a.m. EST on Monday, the moon will pass within 216,486 miles (348,400 km) of Earth’s surface, about 22,000 miles (35,400 km) closer than average, they added.

The moon’s distance from Earth varies because it is in an egg-shaped, not circular, orbit around the planet.

If skies are clear, the upcoming full moon will appear up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than usual, making it what is called a supermoon, according to NASA. A supermoon occurs when the timing of a full moon overlaps with the point in the moon’s 28-day orbit that is closest to Earth. About every 14th full moon is a supermoon, said University of Wisconsin astronomer Jim Lattis.

The next time a full moon comes as close to Earth will be in 2034.

the Ridgewood Blog Honors Veterans Day

November 11,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Veterans Day is an official United States public holiday, observed annually on November 11, that honors military veterans; that is, persons who served in the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I; major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The United States previously observed Armistice Day. The U.S. holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day; Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who died while in military service.

Reader says I lost so-called friends for expressing my opinion during the election season

Clinton vs Trump 2016

I lost so-called friends for expressing my opinion during the election season. I said Trump would win based on the crowds that he attracted to his rallies. The fact that Hillary needed celebs at her rallies and drew fewer people was an indication that she was not the most popular likely to win candidate.

So , I’m pretty smart and everybody hated what I said. I am smarter than the pollsters and the pundits, but get no money for my smartness hence I am stupid.

Reader says I am beyond disappointed with the Pomander decision

village Council

I am beyond disappointed with the Pomander decision. It is completely unbalanced and lacks all perspective. That street is probably one of the LEAST driven streets in this whole town. It was done pretty much to punish a local business and I do not understand why the four voted the way they did. We all have problems on our streets, we all deal with safety issues with cars driving too fast creating unsafe conditions for our children. Why are we not all treated equally? And to rub it in, they do not follow the rules so they receive all the benefit and share 0 of the burden. There were no fewer than 4 cars parked on the street this morning. Susan had it exactly right, as usual.
