>Ridgewood drops starting salaries for police officers

When the village hires police officers next year to fill positions left vacant by retirements, those new officers will receive a significantly lower starting salary.

A new police superiors and officers salary ordinance introduced by the Village Council at a special public meeting on Monday will lower the starting salary for officers coming into the department after Dec. 1 to $32,000, down from the previous starting salary of $49,273, according to the ordinance.

Officers hired at the previous starting salary would see an increase in their wages to $53,357 after working six months in the department, according to the ordinance, but new hires will have to wait until their third year to reach a salary of $51,220.

Each year, new officers will receive a salary “step” of approximately $10,000, according to the ordinance.

>Parents of gay teen who killed himself to sue N.J. school

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — The parents of a Rutgers University student who killed himself after his roommate allegedly used a webcam to spy on him during a tryst with another man have filed notice that they intend to sue the school.

Joseph and Jane Clementi, parents of Tyler Clementi, filed the notice on Friday. They have to wait six months to file the lawsuit over their son’s death, which became a symbol in a national outcry over the bullying of young gays.

In the notice, the couple said that “it appears Rutgers University failed to act, failed to put in place and/or failed to implement, and enforce policies and practices that would have prevented or deterred such acts, and that Rutgers failed to act timely and appropriately.”

The claim, first reported by the Home News Tribune of East Brunswick, did not list how much in damages the Ridgewood, N.J., family would seek.

>Outgoing Bergen County Democrat political appointees to receive a 3.5 percent raise

HACKENSACK — Republicans are crying foul over 3.5 percent raises given to outgoing political appointees and other “at-will” employees in Bergen County.

Outgoing Democratic County Executive Dennis McNerney approved raises for about 200 county employees that total about $402,000.

They were given despite furloughs and layoffs that went into effect several months ago.

>DeMint vows to reverse FCC’s ‘Internet takeover’

Sen. Jim DeMint, R-SC, says Federal Communications Commission should be renamed the “Fabricating a Crisis Commission,” following a vote by the panel’s three Democrats to approve proposed rules that amount to a hostile takeover of the Internet by a government agency acting illegally.

The proposal – misleadingly described by proponents as an attempt to insure “net neutrality” by guaranteeing equal access to the Internet – was introduced a year ago by Julius Genachowski, President Obama’s appointee as FCC chairman.

A federal court has ruled that the commission has no authority to regulate the Internet, and a bipartisan group of senators and representives warned Genechowski not to attempt to impose a regulatory regime on the Internet earlier this year.

The move’s legality was even questioned by FCC Commissioner Michael Copp, one of the Democrats who voted today with Genachowski, saying he considered voting against the proposal because it lacks a sufficiently defensible legal basis to survive a court challenge promised by major Internet Service Providers like Verizon, Microsoft, and AT & T.

But legal challenges by industry are likely to be much less of a problem for the Genachowski-led takeover than efforts in Congress to stop the FCC in its tracks.
