The Ridgewood Board of Education (BOE) this month joined with the municipality in furthering its mission to be Sustainable Jersey certified.

At a board meeting on Dec. 1, trustees voted to participate in Sustainable Jersey for Schools to focus attention on the environment and pursue initiatives toward certification.

The program pushes concepts like reduce, reuse, recycle; adhering to green building standards for construction and renovation; and encourages making eco-friendly purchases for things like paper, equipment and cleaning products.

In passing the resolution, the district will form a Sustainability Leadership Team of students and teachers to seek out opportunities for improvement in these areas.

Toward that goal, the board also passed another resolution to “reduce and reuse rather than recycle.”

In Final Spending Bill, Salty Food and Belching Cows Are Winners

By ROBERT PEARDEC. 14, 2014

WASHINGTON — Health insurance companies preserved their tax breaks. Farmers and ranchers were spared having to report on pollution from manure. Tourist destinations like Las Vegas benefited from a travel promotion program.

Also buried in the giant spending bill that cleared the Senate on Saturday and is headed to President Obama for his signature were provisions that prohibit the federal government from requiring less salt in school lunches and allow schools to obtain exemptions from whole-grain requirements for pasta and tortillas.

The watered-down standards for school meals were a setback for the first lady, Michelle Obama, who had vowed to fight “until the bitter end” for tougher nutrition standards. But they were a victory for food companies and some local school officials, who had sought changes in regulations that are taking effect over several years.

Apartment proposals would change village

To the editor:

Thank you to all who planned and worked, mentally and physically, to ring in the Christmas season, attract and please all the faiths in town, make everyone feel welcome, and spread friendliness and joy.

The music, speeches, tree decorated, Santa on his way, shops waiting a busy time … and then it rains.

My family and I moved to Ridgewood in 1950. I have led a very active volunteer life and was often involved with outdoor events, so I well know that awful feeling about the weather, so my heart goes out to all who were in charge for the lovely Christmas tree lighting event. Again, thank you to all.

After having raised a family in a house here in town, I moved to a then-brand new apartment near the railroad station and for years have enjoyed a view of the tree from my living room, so I have shared with so many the beauty of our village at Christmas.

Every week, I read your paper regarding the plans and dreams of the brave people who volunteer to tackle the past, present and not tested problems of the future. I would like to warn that going the way of a lot more apartments is going to change the feeling of the town, not only in appearance but the people whom would be interested in occupying them.

I do not know whether the apartments will be rentals or condos. They would draw different people. Really, neither would be particularly interested in the life of the town particularly if they commute to work. In many cases, if the tenants or owners are retired, there is a good chance they would have a second home some place other than New Jersey.

Nick Barnabic, Ken Marshall, Billy Byrne Named All-Suburban Boys Cross-Country Team

December 12, 2014    Last updated: Friday, December 12, 2014, 12:31 AM
By Greg Tartaglia

RIDGEWOOD — The top three boys cross-country teams at this season’s Bergen Meet of Champions (BMOC) were Don Bosco Prep, Ridgewood and Indian Hills.

The latter two added state-sectional titles, and Don Bosco – whose group does not crown section champs – tied for first place at the State Non-Public A meet. All three schools went on to qualify for the State Meet of Champions (SMOC).

Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the trio dominates the All-Suburban first team, which features five Ironmen, three Maroons and two Braves. The 10-man squad includes four seniors, four juniors and two sophomores.:

Nick Barnabic

GRADE: Junior

SCHOOL/HOMETOWN: Ridgewood

PREVIOUS HONORS: 2013 second team

SEASON BEST: 15:58

FAST FACTS: Barnabic was one of the Maroons’ top three runners and also took a couple turns at the No. 1 spot. He led Ridgewood with a second-place finish in the Big North Freedom Division meet, where the team held off Indian Hills for the title, and added a sixth-place showing at the Bergen Group A meet to pace his squad to second behind Don Bosco.

Billy Byrne

GRADE: Sophomore

SCHOOL/HOMETOWN: Ridgewood

SEASON BEST: 16:04

FAST FACTS: Byrne qualified for the SMOC as a wildcard by clocking a 23rd-place 16:35 in the State Group 4 finals at Holmdel Park, a 40-plus second improvement from his previous course best. He logged top-five finishes at the Big North Freedom (fifth) and North 1, Group 4 (fourth) meets, helping the Maroons to championships in both.

Ken Marshall

GRADE: Junior

SCHOOL/HOMETOWN: Ridgewood

PREVIOUS HONORS: 2013 second team

SEASON BEST: 15:55

FAST FACTS: Marshall emerged as the Maroons’ No. 1 runner down the stretch, leading them in every meet from the BMOC onward. He won the individual title at the North 1, Group 4 meet — where Ridgewood captured its fifth straight sectional crown – and finished 20th at the Group 4 finals to earn an SMOC wildcard bid.

Ridgewood schools to give update to special needs program

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Ridgewood is revamping its innovative special needs program with a new name and different structure to better reflect how it works and benefits students.

The Ridgewood Board of Education on Dec. 1 unanimously voted to rename the Ridgewood High School SAIL (Strategic Actions and Innovations for Learning) program to PREP (Practical, Real-Life Education and Preparation), to better describe what it does.

The program will also have a delayed start going forward, and students will not be moved into it until their sophomore year of high school.

Currently students are assigned to the program in eighth grade, but next year will be assigned at the end of ninth grade so they will have a year of classes in the high school’s resource room program before being designated as PREP students in their sophomore year.

The program, which readies students for vocational jobs, has allowed many special education students to stay in district, a benefit to both students and the district’s coffers.

Half of Americans Don’t Want Their Sons Playing Football, Poll Shows

Dec 10, 2014 7:00 AM EST
Women and elites in particular want to keep their boys off the gridiron.

Annie Linskey

Television ratings are up and merchandise sales arebooming, but longer-term trends don’t look as rosy for football. According to a new Bloomberg Politics poll, 50 percent of Americans say they wouldn’t want their son to play the sport and only 17 percent believe it’ll grow in popularity in the next 20 years.

These are grim numbers for a sport that’s seeing an onslaught of negative attention, including a parade of National Football League players accused of abusing their wives or children; a team name so offensive that some news organizations refuse to print it; and, perhaps most troubling to parents, the growing body of evidence that repeated blows to the head can cause long-lasting brain damage. The sport’s troubles have caught the attention of Congress, whose members hauled a league official to Washington for a Senate hearing earlier this month. Individual lawmakers have proposed ending the league’s tax-exempt statusand putting its coveted anti-trust exception up for a five year review.

The finding suggest that, over the course of time, football could go the way of boxing, a marquee American sport in the early part of the 20th century that declined amid a similar set of dynamics: changing perceptions of its brutality and star athletes making headlines for violent crimes.

Mickey and math? Disney launches education apps

WIRE SERVICE

Mickey is getting into math — and science, art, reading and even teaching social skills.

The Walt Disney Co. is launching a new line of learning tools designed to help parents encourage kids 3 to 8 to learn outside of school. Disney Imagicademy begins with a series of mobile apps but will later expand into other products such as books and interactive toys. Over time, the target age will also grow to include older kids.

To start, Disney is launching an iPad app called “Mickey’s Magical Math World” on Thursday, focused on math-based activities such as counting, shapes, logic and sorting. Within the app, there are five add-on activities such as “Minnie’s Robot Count-Along” and “Goofy’s Silly Sorting.” The basic app is free to use, but the enhanced activities cost $4.99 each or $19.99 for all five. Future apps, on subjects ranging from life science using characters from Disney’s “Frozen” to creative arts, will be similarly priced. The apps are ad free, keeping with laws that prevent targeting online advertising at kids under 13.

A companion app for parents lets grown-ups follow along with what their kids are doing even if they are using a separate mobile device. It also suggests a bevy of offline activities, such as creating “rocket racers” using toilet paper tubes, duct tape and balloons, or making a colorful “quilt” out of tissue paper to learn shapes.

A question of homework: tenafly parents protest the load, joining nationwide trend

THE RECORD

TENAFLY — Pressured by parents, school district officials are considering lowering the stress of homework with such measures as homework-free nights and vacations, and giving students more information about the demands they will face in choosing courses.

The district also will organize workshops for parents on reducing children’s stress.

The measures are being taken after a group of high school parents confronted the school board, arguing that homework is wreaking havoc on their children’s lives.

Tenafly is just the latest of many districts nationwide trying new approaches amid the high-stakes competition for college that has fueled an intense schedule of testing and nightly homework in local districts.

The parents’ group, Rational Homework Review, says the heavy workload prevents their children from maintaining a healthy lifestyle and getting adequate sleep. They also argue that some assignments lack educational value.

Other school districts statewide, including Ridgewood and Glen Rock, have reexamined homework policies or changed them in recent years to help balance students’ lives. Nationally, an anti-homework backlash has been spurred in part by studies on sleep deprivation among teens, a plethora of books about the homework craze and a documentary called “Race to Nowhere” about students in a pressured educational environment.
