Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood YMCA Celebrates 50th Graduating Class of Living Strong, Living Well Cancer Survivor Program

Graduation ceremony held June 16 at Ridgewood YMCA

On Thursday, June 16th, the Ridgewood YMCA celebrated its 50th graduating class of Living Strong, Living Well (LSLW), a strength and fitness program offered by the Y to cancer patients and survivors. The program began in 2008 and to date has touched the lives of over 400 participants. Developed by Stanford University, and partially funded through a grant from the Valley Hospital Foundation, LSLW is a 12-week small group class designed to build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve functional ability. Unique benefits of this program include nutritional information, social and emotional support, and improved levels of energy and self-esteem.

“The LSLW program has greatly helped cancer survivors increase their strength, flexibility, and range of motion. But more importantly it has helped them recover. By meeting others with similar issues, they develop friendships and a new support system which helps them realize that they can overcome anything,” says Carol Livingstone, Health & Fitness Director at the Ridgewood YMCA. “They develop good exercise habits which gives them hope for a healthier future. And they find an inner strength they didn’t know they had by empowering them to do more than they thought they could when first starting the program.”

Amy Phillips, Director of Fund Development at the Ridgewood YMCA, said, “The Ridgewood Y is extremely grateful to the Valley Hospital Foundation for their steadfast support for this tremendously impactful program”.

Living Strong, Living Well is offered at no charge and each participant is given a free Three-Month Triangle Membership to the Ridgewood YMCA, which includes access to workout equipment, two pools, and fitness classes. The next session begins September 7, 2016.

Ridgewood YMCA Offers International Summer Camp Program to the Dominican Republic

The Ridgewood YMCA is now accepting applications for its summer 2014 International Camp Program to the Dominican Republic. The program is open to teens in grades 10 through 12 and offers life changing experiences and the opportunity for personal growth while completing important service projects abroad. The trip will take place from July 6 through 14.

Gary Imhoff, Director of Marketing and Membership at the Ridgewood YMCA says, “Our International Camp Program is unique in that it is first and foremost a service project trip. The goal of the program is to challenge each participant to develop a strong sense of self confidence, independence and cooperation and an appreciation for the diversity of cultures throughout the world. However, the trip also includes exciting day trips and visits to cultural landmarks so it’s a great mix of work and fun”.

Participants in the program will work alongside local Haitian and Dominican teens on the repair and building of homes for families in need, and will also complete vital reforestation projects.

Says Imhoff, “Two of the greatest benefits a participant will gain from the program are the life- long friendships made and the interpersonal skills developed by traveling to a foreign country with a small group of people. ICP provides a wonderful cultural and character building experience for everyone involved”.

Interested participants may learn more about the program and download applications by visitingwww.ridgewoodymca.org/icp or by calling 201.444.5600 x500.

The Ridgewood YMCA is located at 112 Oak Street in Ridgewood, NJ.

Ridgewood YMCA says internal review underway after learning of worker’s sex assault arrest

THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD — Officials for the Ridgewood YMCA said they are conducting an “internal review” after discovering a temporary maintenance worker had been charged with sexually assaulting a minor several years ago.

The incident occurred when the victim was between 15 and 18, but she only reported it to authorities recently at the age of 23.

Abelardo Ramirez, 46, of Glen Rock, was arrested last Wednesday and charged with aggravated and criminal sexual assault, as well as endangering a minor, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. He remains at the Bergen County Jail on $350,000 bail.

It is unclear if Ramirez is still employed at the Oak Street facility. A statement issued by Y officials this week called Ramirez “one of our substitute building maintenance personnel.”

Later the statement adds that he “worked for us for less than six months” and assured that “no complaints have been brought forward in regard to the employee during his employment with us.”
