A true advocate for Ridgewood

To the Editor:

I was unable to attend the reception at Village Hall in honor of Roger Wiegand, but wanted to add something from my own personal experiences with Roger.

I started attending council meetings years ago whenever there was an issue that seemed important to me. For a few years, I would notice Roger and Boyd Loving in the audience before ever actually speaking to them. They didn’t know this, but I was always so grateful to see them there as I felt they were the voices of reason in a sometimes diverse airing of opinions.

Soon I was chatting with Roger when I would see him riding his bike through the neighborhood. When I could corner him, I’d pick his brain on whatever the latest issue was.

It’s seeing a bicyclist around town, or a lone man sitting at the counter of The Fireplace restaurant, and for a split second thinking maybe it’s him.

The memory of Roger Wiegand is everywhere. His death on April 18 left a void in the lives of many and a question of who would take on the civic duties he voluntarily tasked himself with, like painting the fire boxes in the village or getting officials to fix broken street lights.

Last Friday, at an event attended by dozens of friends, family and public leaders in Village Hall, his contributions were honored with an appropriate marker of his influence, a gold-plated plaque installed on the podium in the council chambers engraved with his strong-held belief: “The public should always have the final word.”

Mayor Paul Aronsohn explained that it was Wiegand’s suggestion to have a public comment session at the end of each council meeting in addition to one at the beginning.

“This room doesn’t feel the same without Roger,” Aronsohn said. “He was such a genuine person who contributed so much to the community.”

The street on which he lived, South Irving, was also affixed with a tribute to his life and renamed Wiegand Way.

“I’m overwhelmed,” said Kerry Daley, Wiegand’s niece. “He would have been so mad at all of this … wasting money and time on him.”

THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD — Week after week for years, Roger Wiegand would stand at the lectern in Village Hall with arms folded to address the council. But the voice at the podium made his final comments to Ridgewood’s governing body last fall, after which he soon took ill. Wiegand, a lifelong resident, died in April. And since his death, the council has been considering ways to honor him.

Now, along with members of Wiegand’s family, village officials will gather tonight in the council chambers for a brief reception honoring his memory.

The Village Council also plans to name a portion of South Irving Street “Wiegand Way.”

During the event at 5:30, the speaker’s lectern — Wiegand’s platform — will be affixed with a plaque honoring the outspoken resident.

Village to honor Roger Wiegand

Village to honor Roger Wiegand

to the Editor:

So many times growing up my brother and I would hear people say, “Rog – you should run for Mayor!” But that wasn’t Rog. He didn’t like the limelight. He preferred to be off to the side, watching, listening, educating and DOING.

He silently – and with no desire for thanks or praise — attended to things most of us assume others will address in our own communities. He would ride around town on his beloved bike, painting fire boxes so they would remain visible to the public. He reported to the Village Hall locations of non-functioning street lights. If he knew of someone in need, he would always take the time to offer them assistance or to just simply lend an ear.

Most importantly he was a fixture at every council meeting along with his longtime friend, Boyd Loving. He used to tell us that his goal was to keep the council “honest” on behalf of all the village residents.

To commemorate his lifelong dedication to Ridgewood and its citizens, there will be a plaque installed on the Village Council chamber podium on Friday, Sept. 5. We would like to invite the public to attend this event at Village Hall from 5:30 to 7 p.m. to help us celebrate such a unique and wonderful man. Our Uncle, friend to many, village champion.

Kerry, Mike and MaryAnn Daley
