Ridgewood asks resident to clear out snow near hydrants

The majority of Ridgewood’s 722 fire hydrants have been cleared of snow and ice, but municipal and public safety officials are reminding residents to take action if another winter storm rears its head.

In a village-wide message delivered to E-Notice subscribers late last week, Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld urged residents to free their neighborhood hydrants of snow, ice and other debris. For property owners who cannot clean a path around the hydrant themselves, Sonenfeld advised that notice should be given to her office or the Ridgewood Fire Department.

“We understand that there are residents who are not able to do so,” Sonenfeld said.

Fire Chief James Van Goor added that his department will respond “if we missed any.”

According to Van Goor, Ridgewood firefighters tour the village and clear snow from hydrants “for a couple of days after a storm.” Though the village ultimately completes the job, officials request that residents assist in the process and remove snow from hydrants when possible.

PSE&G Readies for Snowstorm

PSE&G Readies for Snowstorm

(NEWARK, NJ – Feb. 28, 2014) Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G), New Jersey’s largest electric and gas utility, is preparing for the approaching snowstorm expected to impact the region Sunday evening through Monday.

Up to a foot of snow accumulation is possible in some areas. While snow usually isn’t an issue for utilities, the possibility of sleet and freezing rain can increase the likelihood of downed wires and resulting power outages. Vehicles striking utility poles can also cause wires to come down.

In anticipation of the storm, PSE&G is ensuring that all available personnel are ready to respond beginning Sunday. The utility is also arranging for contractors, including tree crews, to assist the utility’s own skilled workforce, and ensuring that additional supplies such as poles and transformers are on hand.

PSE&G offers the following tips to customers to prepare:

Charge your cell phones, tablets and other mobile devices.
Fill up your car’s fuel tank.
Ensure you have a battery-powered radio and a supply of fresh batteries.
Check your supply of flashlights, blankets, nonperishable food and bottled water for everyone in your family.
Put your refrigerator and freezer at the coldest setting. Keep a blanket handy to throw over these appliances for added insulation. If electricity is interrupted, keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible.
Sign up for MyAccount at www.pseg.com and bookmark the mobile-friendly homepage on your smart phone so it’s easy to report outages and check restoration progress.
Compile a list of emergency phone numbers, including PSE&G’s Customer Service line: 1-800-436-PSEG. Call this number to report power outages or downed wires.

Accumulation of heavy snow may weigh down power lines and as a result cause power lines to come down. PSE&G urges its customers to be cautious if they see downed lines. Downed wires may appear dead but should always be considered “live.” Do not approach or drive over a downed line and do not touch anything that it might be in contact with.

To report downed wires or power outages, customers should call PSE&G’s Customer Service line at 1-800-436-PSEG. Customers with a handheld device, or who are at an alternate location with power, can also report power outages and view the status of their outage by logging in to My Account on www.pseg.com, PSE&G’s mobile-friendly website.

General outage activity throughout our service territory is available online atwww.pseg.com/outagecenter and updates are posted on www.pseg.com during severe weather.

The utility’s Twitter and Facebook pages also keep the public informed about our restoration progress. Sign up as a follower at https://www.twitter.com/psegdelivers andwww.facebook.com/pseg  to monitor restoration progress. Customers also can register for text and email alerts at www.pseg.com/myaccount.

Following a snowstorm that lasted from Feb. 4 to 5, longtime resident Sal Falciglia saw a car stuck in the snow in downtown Ridgewood on Feb. 6, and couldn’t take it anymore.

“Our road department in Ridgewood is the worst road department in the world,” he said.

The plowing on Rock Road in Glen Rock was much closer to the curb than plowing he had seen in Ridgewood, he said, and “all my neighbors are sick and tired of it.”

Maureen Wolfson, who has lived in the village for 30 years, called this “the worst year ever” for snow removal. She “almost broke [her] neck” trying to put money in a parking meter at the train station, where the sidewalks were poorly shoveled, she said.

First came a pair of storms last week that dumped more than a foot of wet snow on the region. A week of subfreezing temperatures followed, creating a dense ice pack that began to stress roofs across North Jersey.

But it wasn’t until the nor’easter on Thursday pounded the region with 12 to 16 inches of snow, rain and ice that roofs began to be brought down under the weight of this winter’s unrelenting misery.

An elementary school in Wallington, a department store in Woodland Park and a sports complex in Waldwick were among at least a dozen buildings that partially collapsed on Friday. A ShopRite in New Milford was closed after the ceiling buckled. No major injuries were reported in any of the incidents.

SANITATION COLLECTION IN SNOW OR ICY WEATHER

SANITATION COLLECTION IN SNOW OR ICY WEATHER

As a reminder on days when snow or ice is forecast, residents will be required to bring their garbage cans to the curb for collection. VOR staff will only pick up garbage and recycling at the curb in snow or ice conditions. Ice condition is when ice is present in driveways and sidewalks. Due to numerous slip and falls today by Sanitation staff (some requiring Hospital visits) if your driveway was not clear your garbage has not been collected and should be placed at the curb.

Another snowy, frigid day in North Jersey still beckons many outside

When winter has you in its grip, there’s a choice: stay inside and escape it, or go outside and embrace it.

With temperatures stuck below freezing for the fourth consecutive day and a mix of snow and sleet coating the ground, the preference of many on Saturday was evidently a trek to the Great Indoors.

But for a hearty handful, there was enough fun to be had on snowpack to forget the bone-chilling temperatures.

“It was all her idea,” said Lucas Kovalcik of Glen Rock, as he hopped aboard a sled with his 5-year-old daughter Ella, at Citizen’s Park in Ridgewood. The little girl had packed the plastic sled with snow — “She likes to lie on top of the snow,” her father said — and they glided down the hill through a gap between two trees to the bottom.

Kovalcik was clearly in touch with his inner child as he trudged back up the hill with his daughter for another go.
