Ridgewood NJ, The Ridgewood Historical Society presents “THE THREAD OF LIFE—Exploring the fabric of family over the centuries through fashion and style”.
According to the Ridgewood Historical Society , “Much of our life and personal history is woven into the fabrics of an era. This exhibit recreates the intimate journey of an imagined New Jersey family as they navigate the milestones of life: birth (christening dresses), marriage (wedding gowns), and death (mourning attire)—and many familiar events in between. For this exhibit we showcase some of our most priceless antique garments, and accompany them with historic artifacts and ephemera from our own collection.”
“This is a beautiful presentation of generations of a family’s milestones illustrated by the clothing they wore and the artifacts that surrounded them. We will arrange special group tours and we encourage all teachers to bring their classes. Contact us at 201-447-3242.”

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Historical Society & Schoolhouse Museum to display a plaster copy of Napoleon Bonaparte’s death mask in our Memento Mori section of our exhibit “The Thread of Life.” Bonaparte died in 1821 in exile on the British island of Saint Helena. At that time it was a common practice to make a death mask of notable figures who passed away. Napoleon’s physician, François Carlo Antommarchi, cast one mask and later produced copies.
Come and see this fascinating artifact, on loan from Mark Wright, with your own eyes! Opening day of the exhibit is this Sunday March 11, at 2 pm.

Dear Ridgewood Resident,
Those actively involved in the Historical Society and the Schoolhouse Museum keep saying we are the best-kept secret in Ridgewood. The museum is Ridgewood’s very own and only museum, and we are working hard to make it less of a secret and more a recognized institution in the village. To that end, we have been changing our exhibits each year, and we are trying to bring in more visitors with programs above and beyond the exhibits.
If you haven’t visited our 2017 exhibit From the Revolutionary War to the Revolution of the of the 1960’s, please find time to visit. We also have three other small exhibits: A Tribute to the 19th Century Comedic Actor Joe Jefferson, 50 Small Things with Big Histories, and our permanent installation on farm tools.
Last fall we were busy with our cemetery walks, our celebration of all things apple, and a series of demonstrations by craftswomen. This spring we have had three great speakers: Bob Bracken on the Titanic, Chris Stout on Ridgewood’s Heroes, and Patricia Hans and her students sharing their research and creative responses to the stories they uncovered.
All of this, of course, is possible because of the participation and financial support of people like you who value the Ridgewood Historical Society’s efforts to preserve and share out local history. We want to keep the Schoolhouse Museum not only alive but flourishing, and hope you will join us as a supporter. Thank you for your commitment to the Ridgewood Historical Society.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I send our heartfelt appreciation for your support. We welcome you as a member of the society and look forward to seeing you at the museum soon!

This year we’re excited to announce that The Ridgewood Historical Society in their Schoolhouse Museum has a copy on display of a beautiful Currier and Ives print entitled “The Star Spangles Banner”. Lady Liberty crowned with an American crest bears the American flag as she points forward to victory. The fires of the battle burn in the distance– presumably the defense of Fort McHenry by American forces during the British attack on September 13, 1814 (in the War of 1812) that inspired Francis Scott Key to write The Star Spangled Banner. Several phrases from the song The Star Spangled Banner serve as the title printed in the lower margin: “O! long may it wave,/ O’er the land of the free,And the home of the brave.”

THE RECORD
RIDGEWOOD – A former chief financial officer for major corporations was sworn in Monday night as the school district’s newest trustee.
Vincent Loncto took his seat as a trustee at Monday’s school board meeting at the district’s Education Center on Cottage Place.
The certified public accountant was one of six candidates interviewed for the trustee post after Charles Reilly resigned earlier this year.
“The school budget is in the process of being developed, so I’m coming in at the right time,” said Loncto, who retired earlier this year from a 40-year career in financial management.
“It has to be done collaboratively,” he said. “What we are talking about here is enhancing the quality of the school system under budgetary constraints. It is detail-intensive work.”

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
The Board of Education (BOE) interviewed six candidates this week for the seat left vacant by trustee Charles Reilly’s departure last month.
Six candidates applied and were each questioned by board members on Monday night regarding their professional backgrounds, reasons for applying for the position, and goals as a potential BOE trustee. The decision on Reilly’s replacement will be announced at a public meeting on Nov. 7.
Among the candidates – James Morgan, Gwen Sullivan, B. Vincent Loncto, Janice Willet, Rei Shinozuka and Eric Gross – several themes were consistent across the six interviews. All expressed a desire to contribute to the reputation of the Ridgewood school district, which was a primary reason behind moving to the village for many of the candidates.
Issues of communication, whether relating to complex technical matters such as yearly budgets or simple instances of parent feedback, were also paramount in candidates’ responses.
>Interviews will be held on Monday, October 24, 2011 for Vacant Board Seat

Janice Willett
Interviews will be held starting at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 24, 2011, at the Regular Public Meeting, in the Board Room on the third floor of the Education Center.
if you can’t handle Ridgewood’s tax burden, then i suggest you MOVE. nobody is holding a gun to your head to live here. if you don’t want to pay state income taxes or don’t want to deal with high property taxes go to Texas!
if you can’t pay our taxes then you’re clearly too poor to be living in ridgewood.
