Hospitals’ lawsuit on tiered network can proceed

MICHAEL L. DIAMOND, @mdiamondapp4 p.m. EST December 28, 2016

Three hospitals — two in Bergen County — sued after they were left out of a leading insurer’s preferred network.

Three hospitals – two in Bergen County – that were left out of the preferred network of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey’s Omnia plan can continue their lawsuit, a state judge has ruled.

Superior Court Judge Robert Contillo in Bergen County dismissed three of the hospitals’ claims. But he said three other claims – including one in which the hospitals take exception to Horizon’s marketing campaign – should be left on the table.

Ridgewood NJ, On Monday, December 12, an audience of more than 50 family, friends and fellow volunteers gathered in The Valley Hospital Shotmeyer Lobby to dedicate the Reception Desk in memory of Ann B. Alford. Audrey Meyers, President and CEO of The Valley Hospital and Valley Health System, expressed her appreciation of Ann and emphasized what a fitting tribute this was to her memory. As a faithful volunteer at the front desk every Monday morning for more than two decades, Mrs. Alford welcomed countless patients, families and guests while graciously directing them to their destinations.

Ann Alford has a long history with Valley, which began in the 1970s when her husband, George Alford, joined The Valley Hospital Board of Trustees. From 1984 to 1989, Mr. Alford served as Chairman of the Hospital Board. He passed away in 1990, and Ann’s commitment to Valley deepened in the subsequent years.

In 1994, Ann joined The Valley Hospital Foundation Board and served for 12 years. Through nine of those years, she was an Officer of the Board, including three years as Chair. She was an Honorary Trustee of The Valley Hospital Foundation and was serving as a trustee on the Valley Health System Board when she passed away.

Ann was a founding member of Valley’s Women for Health program. Each year, this women’s group pools their social and philanthropic resources to assist Valley in providing the best possible healthcare.

Valley is incredibly grateful to Ann for her tireless dedication and devotion.

Ridgewood Nj, On Tuesday, November 15, more than 90 Women For Health group members gathered at the Ridgewood Country Club for their Annual Meeting to vote on the designation of their collective gift to Valley.  This year, the members are donating $170,000 to The Valley Hospital Fertility Center’s Reach for Hope program.  This gift is Women For Health’s largest gift since its inception in 2011.  The Valley Hospital Fertility Center (VHFC) is committed to offering fertility preservation options for cancer patients, and their Reach for Hope Program reduces the oncology patient’s financial responsibility for her IVF cycle.  This gift will provide financial assistance and hope in the form of fertility preservation options to qualified oncology patients.

This year’s gift has an additional level of meaning for the group’s philanthropic members, as they are making the gift in memory of one of their founding members who passed away in June of this year – Ann B. Alford.  In addition to being a founding member of Women For Health, Mrs. Alford was an honorary trustee of The Valley Hospital Foundation and a trustee of Valley Health System.  Present for this announcement were two of Mrs. Alford’s daughters, Elizabeth Hogan and Maria Suehnholz.

Formed in 2011, The Valley Hospital Foundation’s Women For Health philanthropic group has grown from 30 charter members to its current membership of 170 women, primarily from Bergen, Passaic and Rockland Counties. These women have pooled their social and philanthropic resources to assist The Valley Hospital and Valley Home Care in providing the best possible healthcare. Each year the members gather to hear presentations on three funding opportunities at Valley and then vote to determine which program will receive their collective gift.

If you are interested in becoming a member of this unique group of women philanthropists, please contact Sandy Carapezza at 201-291-6300 or [email protected].

Ridgewood NJ,  The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (EPA) has recognized Valley’s commitment to recycling with an outstanding achievement award.

Valley was lauded for its recycling efforts, which include solid waste, medical waste, recycled waste and hazardous waste. The hospital uses a single-stream recycling system and makes a concerted effort to recycle whenever possible. For example, the OR now sends its reports electronically, which is saving hundreds of reams of paper annually. The hospital also recycles items such as old hospital beds and sends certain medical goods to be recycled for use by other institutions.

According to the EPA, “The Department promotes recycling through the annual recycling awards program that is coordinated in conjunction with the Association of New Jersey Recyclers (ANJR). The awards recognize the outstanding recycling achievements of municipalities, counties, businesses and industry and individuals, as well as schools and other institutions and are presented at ANJR’s annual recycling symposium. This program has generated positive publicity for New Jersey’s recycling efforts.”

Last September, Allison was at a 9/11 Memorial Service in Wyckoff honoring fallen Firefighter Dana Rey Hannon, her fiancé, along with 10 other residents who had lost their lives. During the ceremony, a cry went up from the crowd: “Medic!” A woman, overcome by the heat, had fallen out of her chair.
