It all comes down to “Keyboard Bravado”

Ridgewood NJ, Since the Ridgewood blog had come up more than once in the last few civility meetings Mayor Aronsohn and Jan Philips  reached out to us for an invite so we updated our Last Will and Testaments and graciously accepted .The meetings of the Civility Round Table  are held on  Tuesday’s, once a month at 7:30 PM in the Ridgewood Village Hall Senior’s Lounge. Residents are encouraged to attend .

The meeting started promptly at 7:30 and was to my mind well attended given the time of the year . Jan Phelps hosted the meeting , with Mayor Aronsohn and Councilwomen Hauck . Everyone introduced themselves representing various groups and organizations in the Village , from the BOE , the Planing Board , the Ridgewood Library ,several local clergy , the HSA’s , RBSA and may other fine organizations that serve Ridgewood as well as a few residents . The purpose as stated by the Mayor is to create a more civil discourse in the Village .

unnamed-8

Civility is about more than just politeness, although politeness is a necessary first step. It is about disagreeing without disrespect, seeking common ground as a starting point for dialogue about differences, listening past one’s preconceptions, and teaching others to do the same. Civility is the hard work of staying present even with those with whom we have deep-rooted and fierce disagreements. It is political in the sense that it is a necessary prerequisite for civic action. But it is political, too, in the sense that it is about negotiating interpersonal power such that everyone’s voice is heard, and nobody’s is ignored. https://www.instituteforcivility.org/who-we-are/what-is-civility/

The group seemed to agree that Ridgewood is a town where people like to excel , and that drive and those expectations create a very passionate , as you can see from blog comments and opinionated populace . People care about their community and thats a good thing , but many felt that sometimes we all go a bit to far .

We looked at the causes of incivility , the when and why .Sheila Brogan long time BOE member , felt that todays parents had a lot of additional pressure and  worried that in todays world their kids would have a hard time doing as well as they have done . She went on to speak about the changing times and how one could expect to have several careers over a life time  ,all this she  though made being a parent a lot harder than it was in the past  and a lot more pressure .

We managed to go till 8:08 be for someone mentioned the elephant in the room, “I want to talk about the blog”…….

I learned a lot , mostly that I am glad  I can sit in my PJ’s drinking coffee writing a blog getting yelled at by anonymous commenters ,and don’t have a tuff job like the RBSA people who are pulled in many directions ,by so many demands all at once .

There were interestingly a surprising large amount of blog enthusiasts there some open and some secret admirers .

While I could see there were some sore spots , like turf fields , PSEG ,sports issues , Valley Hospital , the Village Hall renovation and alas Marty Brooks the daggers were lowered for the night .

While anonymity of blog posters took a hit as expected some pointed out that even on facebook were you know who everyone is  the comments can be even nastier . A resident put it down to a type of “keyboard bravado.”

Village Annual Martin Luther King Day Observance

All Are Welecome!

Ridgewood and Glen Rock to Host 33rd Annual Martin Luther King Day Observance Rev. Dr. James Forbes, Noted Speaker, Preacher and Teacher, will Address the Program’s Theme, “Standing on the Side of Justice” The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee of Ridgewood and Glen Rock will host its 33rd annual celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. King on Monday, January 19, 2015, at the Ridgewood United Methodist Church, 100 Dayton St., in Ridgewood, New Jersey. The Rev. Dr. James Forbes, Jr., noted speaker, educator, community activist and Senior Minister Emeritus of Manhattan’s Riverside Church, will address the theme of this year’s event, “Standing on the Side of Justice,” during an interfaith worship service beginning at 10 a.m. An 11:30 a.m. outdoor rally, 12 p.m. community lunch, and 1 p.m. performance by Mack Brandon and The Connection will follow the service. The performance will highlight the music that gave voice to the call for action that culminated in the Civil Rights movement.

The program also includes Ridgewood and Glen Rock student speakers and musical performances by the Indian Hills Chamber Choir and Men of Umoja chorus. Guests may attend any or all of the day’s events, which are free and open to the public. “The struggle for racial justice has taken on a heightened sense of urgency, as can be seen in the aftermath of the Ferguson and Eric Garner decisions and the administration’s battle over immigration,” said committee co-chair Alice Newton. “As we celebrate Dr. King’s life and work, we will focus on the vital importance he placed on non-violence, and on standing up and speaking out for justice as a catalyst for creating positive change.” Dr. Forbes served as Senior Minister of the Riverside Church for 18 years, and was named one of the 12 “most effective preachers” in the English-speaking world by Newsweek magazine. He is The Harry Emerson Fosdick Distinguished Professor at Union Theological Seminary and President of the Healing of the Nations Foundation, a non-partisan, interfaith, not-for-profit organization that promotes a holistic understanding of health and wellness. He was the recent host of “The Time is Now” on Air America Radio, and is frequently featured on radio and television. Mack Brandon and The Connection have been inspiring audiences worldwide for 15 years with their entertaining and uplifting renditions of popular gospel music. A composer, pianist, educator, and pastor, Rev. Brandon has been a professor of music at Ramapo College of New Jersey for 20 years and serves as pastor of the Metropolitan AME Zion Church in Ridgewood, N.J. The annual Ridgewood/Glen Rock Martin Luther King Jr. celebration began in 1983 in an effort to unite area residents, regardless of faith or ethnic background, in worship and action as they work towards peace and justice for all. More than 20 religious groups, the Ridgewood and Glen Rock Boards of Education, local government, and civic organizations participate in and support the event each year. Ridgewood leaf removal improved this year

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Leaf removal was better this year

To the Editor:

The leaf removal was very successful this year, thanks to our new village manager.

The only problem is the fact that some residents still placed leaves on the street after the final removal. The removal dates published for each area should have mentioned that the actual removal could be done as early as the first day mentioned. Or simply it may be better not to indicate several days, but only the first day for each area, as was done in prior years.

How to think as a civil society

How to think as a civil society

JANUARY 2, 2015

To the Editor:

According to the dictionary, “civility” means being polite and courteous.

So, really, most everything we know about acting polite and courteous we learned in kindergarten, so to speak, as kids learning how to get along in school and entering the adult world.

In England in the House of Commons, known for its loud unrestrained behavior, recommendations to enforce civility were defeated last year and in years past.

Why? Members of the House believe that uninhibited speech helps to ensure the continuation of a flourishing democracy because it encourages the free expression of ideas.

Yet their society has a much lower incidence of violent crime.

Are we to expand the definition of civility to include illegal acts, or are we going to limit civility to mean acting polite and courteous?

And how about our town meetings? How restrained do we want members of the public to be in their speech?

What is the relationship between civility and a civilized society?

These are questions we have to ask ourselves as we think about civility.

The village is no longer in the dark about why PSE&G had stopped supplying power to the North Walnut Street parking lot.

Lights in the North Walnut Street parking lot have been turned on again after weeks of confusion as to why the electricity had been shut off in the area.

Village employees replaced the bulbs in four street lights last week, again illuminating the lot after dark, after their billing issues with the energy utility company had been fixed.

Since November, the metered municipal parking lot has been without street lights, which PSE&G said was due to an error in their account information.

“The electric service to the meter box that serves the parking lot on North Walnut Street was originally disconnected because the account for the meter was listed as an ‘unknown account,’ which would make billing difficult,” said Deann Muzikar, a spokeswoman for PSE&G. Muzikar said the meter has since been put in the village’s name and electric service has been restored.

Village of Ridgewood New Parking Regulations and Options

unnamed-21

Village of Ridgewood New Parking Regulations and Options

Effective January 1, 2015, the Village of Ridgewood will be implementing several new parking options and regulations all aimed at achieving the most efficient use of parking resources for residents, commuters, central business district employees and visitors to our downtown.

These changes represent months of public discussion of our parking challenges and opportunities.

Metered parking on all streets and lots will now allow up to 3 hours from 10am to 6pm, Monday through Saturday at a rate of $.50 per hour. Repeat parking – in the same space — is prohibited and will be enforced.

Ridgewood Parking Permits (RPP) for Ridgewood Residents are available at an annual rate of $750 to provide unlimited parking in all parking lots. A Ridgewood Resident Sticker is required and available for free when purchasing the RPP.
Ridgewood Parking Permits (RPP) for Non Residents are available at an annual rate of $1,500 to provide unlimited parking in the Cottage Place lot or the Rt. 17 Park and Ride lot.

Central Business District Employee Permits are available on a monthly basis for $80 to provide unlimited parking from 6AM to 2AM at the Ken Smith property or Cottage Place lot.
Important Notes:All permits can be purchased at the Village Hall Reception Desk (Monday through Friday from 8:30AM to 4:30PM) by cash, check or credit card. The cost of the parking permits (outlined above) will be prorated as appropriate.

Similar to the situation prior to 2011, extended parking – beyond 3 hours – generally requires one of the permits outlined above. (Several 12-hour coin-operated meters, however, remain at the train station for Ridgewood resident commuters.)

For more details – concerning documentation requirements and the process for obtaining permits — please visit our website atwww.ridgewoodnj.net or call us at 201.670.5500 ext. 203.
