Readers say Public Sector Pensions Have Become Nothing  more than well-organized defrauding of taxpayers

This is nothing more than well-organized defrauding of taxpayers. The unions have full time officials and lawyers looking for every way possible to way to increase benefits whether they are sustainable or not. It’s easy to spend other people’s money through these generous contracts; until it runs out. Then you become Detroit or Stockton.

It worked when Public Sector salaries were a fraction of Private Sector salaries and people’s life expectancy was 65 years or less and our country was growing consistently and robustly. Now that the Public Sector has enjoyed tremendous growth both in the number of people employed by all levels of governement as well as dramatically increased salaries, life expectancy continues to improve, and growth in the US is slowing and maturing it is not sustainable. Simple economics tells you that fewer people (private sector) can not support more people (public sector) indefinitely. It just can’t. If I was a public employee I would be very diligent in keeping my eye on what is already happening around the country with towns, cities, and even counties declaring bankruptcy and eliminating all previously given retirement benefits. The courts have ruled that it can be done and it has been done and will continue to be done as the benefits burden simply overwhelms town, city, county, and state budgets.

Life expectancy is now +80 years, not 65 years or less. That means a private sector employee who retires at 65 has an average retirement of 15+ years. For a public safety official retiring at 52, or a teacher retiring at 61, they collect benefits for many more years than that (20-30 years) now despite the fact that they haven’t contributed as much as they end up taking out of the system. The benefits are either too generous, or should start after 65 years so as not to incent these workers or their municipal employers to just put in extra time on the job to get their full pension.

The model is no longer practical. Can we convert them to 401k? Give them what should have been paid in to a retirement plan and let them manage it. They are the ones who should be responsible for making the money last till they are 90.

One local resident might have 45 years or pension based on 22 years of service.

Free Blood Pressure Screenings in May and June

Bike_Valley_theridgewoodblog.net_7

Free Blood Pressure Screenings in May and June

The month of May is recognized as National Stroke Awareness Month. On average, one American dies every 4 minutes from a stroke.  According to the American Stroke Association, high blood pressure is the leading cause of stroke and the most important controllable risk factor for stroke.

On select days and times during the months of May and June, various Valley Medical Group primary care locations in Bergen, Passaic and Morris counties will be offering free blood pressure screenings.

Managing blood pressure, along with cholesterol and glucose levels, is the key to preventing not only stroke but heart disease and other cardiovascular conditions.  Because high blood pressure has no symptoms and cannot be detected without being measured, it is important to be screened regularly.

There is no appointment needed for the free screening.  To find a participating Valley Medical Group practice near you and specific dates and times of the screening events, please call 1-800-637-1136, or visit www.ValleyMedicalGroup.com/Screening.

Ridgewood municipal budget approved

For the second year in a row, there will be no new municipal taxes for the average Ridgewood property owner.

The Village Council approved the 2014 municipal budget and a zero percent tax increase by 3-1 vote Wednesday night. The municipal portion of this year’s tax bills will be $3,959, a figure based on the average residential home assessed at $688,358.

To Mayor Paul Aronsohn, who in the past two years has pushed village finance officers for flat taxes, this year’s $46.2 million spending plan and zero percent increase represents a tax relief for already-burdened residents.

“People aren’t making as much [salary] as they used to or are underemployed. We needed to get away from 7 percent tax increases. We needed to express our commitment and determination to do something about it,” Aronsohn said.

“This is the second year in a row that we will be adopting a budget that does not increase municipal taxes … it sets the way for the future. We can’t do this every year, but when we can we should,” he added.

Village of Ridgewood to hoist Honor and Remember flag

Village of Ridgewood to hoist Honor and Remember flag

MAY 25, 2014    LAST UPDATED: SUNDAY, MAY 25, 2014, 1:21 AM
THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD — A new flag will be hoisted into the air above Memorial Park at Van Neste Square on Monday morning.

It is a civilian symbol of remembrance, honoring American soldiers killed in combat.

The village’s Memorial Day ceremonies will commence at 11 a.m. at Van Neste Square, with the Honor and Remember flag being raised to join the Stars and Stripes.

Featuring a red and white background, gold star and flame design in the center, along with additional patriotic elements, the flag was developed by the father of a soldier who died while fighting in Afghanistan.

Only 19 states officially recognize the flag, and Ridgewood is one of a handful of towns in New Jersey to embrace the flag.

A movement is afoot to have the flag adopted as the nation’s official remembrance flag; opponents claim the U.S. flag suffices.

Ridgewood’s Frank Schott honored by village

Frank Schott has called Ridgewood his hometown for more than five decades, but his neighborhood extends well beyond the village’s borders. Throughout the 87-year-old’s lifetime, Schott has offered his ideas, expertise and passion to nearly everyone who asked for his assistance.

Last week, Schott was honored with a Ridgewood Council proclamation that recognized his contributions as a citizen and longtime member of various village boards and committees. He is frequently linked to the Open Space Committee, of which he was a charter member when it was founded in 2001 and served for 13 years until he retired in late 2013.

“He had a passion that drove the committee … and because of his leadership, we have what we have today,” said Councilman Tom Riche, who previously served as liaison to the committee and worked closely with Schott over the past several years. “Because of Frank, our children and grandchildren … will have all these wonderful parks.”

Readers Question the wisdom of reducing traffic lanes at Garber Square

Would be interested in knowing how much additional funds were needed to make Wilsey and Garber Squares into one lanes vs. repaving existing setup. Not completely sure what they are trying to achieve at this location with the narrow roadways — is speeding/pedestrian safety a major issue around that stretch?

Starting Wednesday, May 7th, paving construction work will begin on the West Side at Wilsey and Garber Squares from Godwin Avenue to under the train trestle on Franklin Avenue. Expect traffic congestion in this area for the next 3 months during construction. To avoid delays, we suggest the use of alternate streets to get across the train tracks – Ackerman Avenue or W. Today is Ridgewood Project Pride Day

All Welcome to Help!
Ridgewood’s Project Pride Day Saturday, May 17th, 9:30 a.m. All Ridgewood residents, church groups, local social service agencies, students, scouts, and those with or without green thumbs, are invited to join the leaders of Project Pride in a community effort to beautify our Village. Volunteers are to meet on Saturday, May 17th, at 9:30 a.m. near the Clock Tower (corner of Oak Street and Ridgewood Avenue). Located throughout the Central Business District of Ridgewood are many large containers that are filled with blooming flowers and foliage which line East and West Ridgewood Avenue and the side streets of Oak, Walnut, Chestnut, Broad and Franklin Avenue. This beautification project is accomplished with the assistance of volunteers each year, and the enhancement of our local parks, business district and downtown brings about a true sense of community and pride. This community building effort also provides ownership, accountability and respect. The Project Pride Committee is responsible for the summertime floral hanging baskets, the winter’s illuminated kissing balls, presentation of the HomeScape Awards, and maintenance of local pocket parks and seasonal garden plantings. If interested in obtaining Project Pride membership, or to obtain further information, please contact the Recreation Office at 201-670-5560 weekdays between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
