Ridgewood NJ, PSE&G work in Ridgewood is causing major traffic impact for the Ridgewood and makes the central business district almost inaccessible.
As previously posted on this blog a Traffic Alert “beginning Friday 7/8/16 W.Glen Ave will be closed between Oak Street and Upper Boulevard while PSE&G continues their gas main replacement project from 7am to 4pm Monday through Friday for approximately 2 weeks as the crew works through the train trestle. This will have an impact on traffic traveling west and east through Ridgewood. Traffic will be diverted to the Franklin Ave Underpass for cars. Trucks will be diverted to Wyckoff Ave in Waldwick due to height restrictions. Officers will be deployed to critical intersections to assist the traffic flow. Please plan an alternate route if possible.”
On Tuesday afternoon traffic is backed up on Oak Street in front of the “Y”, Franklin ave , West Ridgewood Ave and Godwin.
Clearly in case of an emergency valuable time would be lost with the trestle being impassable . Perhaps its time to reopen the “traffic easing ” and face facts that the idea was an ill conceived total failure because in the best of circumstances it blocks off the CBD, ties up traffic at the trestle, and backs traffic up West Ridgewood all the way to Midland Park , All because of a “suicide” bike lane installed for people with death wishes.

Ridgewood NJ, This summer, the Ridgewood YMCA’s day camp program is offering kids the best summer ever through an enriching and learning experience to help kids get more out of the summer break – more learning, more exploration and more achievement. Through a mix of fun and educational activities aimed at improving well-being, kids will try new adventures, learn and master new skills, share and trade interests with friends, and get plenty of high-fives along the way.
Working with SEER Analytics to find out how camp benefits kids, the Y recently surveyed nearly 30,000 parents and caregivers with kids enrolled in camp at nearly 190 Y associations nationwide. Ninety-two percent of parents/caregivers said they agreed the Y’s day camp program helped kids make new friends. In addition, 83 percent said they agreed the program helped their kids discover what they can achieve, while 87 percent agreed their child felt a sense of belonging at their Y camp.
“At the Y, we know that when kids are given an opportunity to accomplish things, make friends and feel like they belong, they are comfortable expressing individuality and feel more confident, connected and supported,” says Gary Imhoff, Director of Marketing and Membership at the Ridgewood YMCA. “We are focusing on these youth development areas to ensure that kids in our day camp program go home with so much excitement for all they’ve accomplished and enjoyed that they can’t wait to come back the next day.”
The Y’s day camp activities focus on helping kids grow socially, emotionally, cognitively and physically. These activities include team-building games, swim lessons, youth sports, creative projects and more.
As a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, the Y offers so much more than a place to play and have fun. Through a holistic approach to youth development, the Y nurtures the potential of children and teens from birth to career to help them achieve in school and life. Through day camp and other youth development programs, the Y is working to keep kids active and address gaps in learning when school is not in session.
Ridgewood YMCA’s Summer Day Camp Program begins June 20 and registration is now open. Online registration is available at www.ridgewoodymca.org/camp.

YWCA Offers Youth and Adult Synchronized Swimming! The YWCA Bergen County is offers synchronized swimming classes for ages 7 to adult at 112 Oak Street in Ridgewood. Instructor Laura Alt, certified US Synchronized Swimming coach, invites swimmers with at least Level 3 swim skills (swim the front crawl with coordination of side breathing, elementary back stroke, and tread water for 1 minute) to join in.
Synchronized swimming promotes healthy competition as an individual and as part of a team. It demands strong swimming skill, discipline and commitment on the part of its athletes. The sport develops strength, flexibility and the ability to work cooperatively within the team. Synchro students also learn to act as role models, and to support and respect those around them. The Syncho Swim Program assists young athletes to strive for excellence while enjoying swimming. Synchro swim is a performance sport (similar to ice skating or ballroom dance) which is performed in deep water. A swimmer learns basic swimming strokes, body positions, and stunts that are choreographed into routines that are performed in front of judges or an audience.
The YWCA offers two levels of youth synchronized swim classes, Synchro Stars team, and an adult synchronized swim class. For details about Synchronized Swimming, please call 201-444-5600, ext. 400. Bring a swimsuit, cap, and goggles.
Ridgewood resident Dawn Walter steps in to keep camp program afloat
JULY 21, 2014 LAST UPDATED: MONDAY, JULY 21, 2014, 1:56 PM BY LAURA HERZOG STAFF WRITER THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
After a period of uncertainty for a beloved, 46-year tradition, Paterson children will once again be swimming at Graydon Pool and the Ridgewood YMCA this August.
Thank Dawn Walter.
This spring, the 12-year Ridgewood resident took on a leadership role previously held for 28 years by former resident Eileen Mohan, who moved to Singapore for her husband’s job last August.
“These are memories. The kids look forward to this, and it changes their lives,” Walter said.
When Mohan moved, the program she led – which coordinates free YMCA swim lessons and Graydon Pool swim time in August for campers from Paterson – was left in jeopardy. There was no known replacement for several months, and Mohan was worried that the program would fall to the wayside.
This April, Walter stepped up.
Walter, a member of the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood’s Citizens for Swimming, said she wanted to do something “more hands-on” to help people.
“This is about as hands-on as you can get,” she said. “This will keep them [the children] safe their entire lives.”
Since 1968, Citizens for Swimming has coordinated Ridgewood swimming field trips for Paterson young people. Nearly 50 years later, children from Paterson’s Community Association with a Ministry to People Youth Development Program (CAMP YDP) still look forward to the program.
