Controlled Detonation & No Rain Date: Ridgewood Responds to 4th of July Fireworks Cancellation

Ridgewood NJ, Following a evening of severe weather that left a trail of damage across Bergen County, the Village of Ridgewood has released an official update addressing the total cancellation of the 2026 Independence Day fireworks.
The update explains a series of high-stakes logistical decisions made by emergency personnel—including a mandatory “controlled detonation” on Veterans Field and an unexpected conflict with global sporting events that eliminated any chance of a rain date.
Here is the breakdown of why the fireworks had to be destroyed on-site, why a replacement show cannot happen this weekend, and the current state of local storm recovery.
The Veterans Field Controlled Detonation Explained
Many local residents were startled by explosions after the official cancellation notice went out. According to Village Manager Keith Kazmark, the Ridgewood Fire Department faced an immediate safety crisis: the massive pyrotechnics display had already been completely set up on Veterans Field when the severe weather hit.
Due to deteriorating atmospheric conditions, lightning risks, and rapidly increasing wind gusts, fire officials determined that the live fireworks could not be safely repackaged, handled, or removed from the launchers.
To eliminate any risk of an accidental, unguided explosion over residential areas:
-
The Ridgewood Police Department quickly secured a rigid safety perimeter around the field.
-
The Ridgewood Fire Department oversaw a controlled detonation of the explosives on-site to safely neutralize the hazard.
Why There Is No Rain Date This Weekend
Many have asked why the event could not simply slide to Sunday, July 5th. The answer comes down to an unprecedented regional security constraint: The FIFA World Cup.
With a massive World Cup match scheduled in the region on Sunday, July 5, public safety resources, emergency personnel, and mutual aid partners from across northern New Jersey have been strictly reassigned to stadium and transit security detail. Without these vital regional assets, Ridgewood lacks the baseline emergency personnel required to safely secure and conduct a major fireworks launch this weekend.
What’s Next for America250?
While a weekend makeup date is impossible, the celebration isn’t completely dead. The Village has announced plans to meet with the local 4th of July Committee to explore scheduling an alternative community fireworks display later this year as part of the ongoing America250 milestone festivities.
At lest they didn’t blame Trump.

Its a cost issue
Glad they called it off because true in fact the storm that they predicted was brutal, with high winds. As such, why take the risk to dedonate the fireworks in high winds. Moreover there were zero police or fire around vets or Graydon when they were during them. Zero. All fencing was already taken down so people and cars were 20 feet away. Don’t listen to everything you read by KK. And how many RW EMS, fire and police are going to FIFA. Last, I would like to see the minutes of the July 4th committee where they talked about contingency plans and FIFA.
Good call by the decision makers to clear that field when they did…that was a nasty storm
Now the excuses begin. Village leadership continuously struggles with poor decision making.
How was calling last night a poor decision? This I have to hear! Or are you just one of those miserable people who like to bitch on the blog?
Why the stupid Trump comment and nice spelling
People it’s dead just forget about it, they can’t afford it, the overtime, the extra security. It’s not in the budget. They have to worry about yard waste clean up that’s more important.
I’m consistently amazed by how many people do not realize that the entire production for Ridgewood 4th of July is organized by a private non-profit volunteer-run committee, not the Village itself. The call to cancel was motivated by concerns for public safety as properly addressed by the appropriate Village officials. No refunds was specified on the Ridgewood 4th Website where you purchase tickets, so I’m going to guess that after doing this for so many years, the “no refunds” is likely also in print on tickets and on promotional materials.
