Ridgewood NJ, An Edison, New Jersey man has been sentenced to more than four years in federal prison for his role in a massive, multi-year internet fraud network. Kenny Osas Okuonghae, 38, was handed a 51-month prison sentence by U.S. District Judge Georgette Castner in Trenton. The court order follows his April 2025 guilty plea to conspiracy to commit money laundering, a charge tying him to a web of devastating digital crimes—including romance fraud, property rental deception, and the notorious cryptocurrency phenomenon known as “pig butchering.”

In addition to his prison term, Okuonghae faces three years of supervised release and has been ordered to pay $1,275,190 in restitution to his victims.

Inside the Scheme: How the Laundering Network Operated

According to federal court documents and statements made during proceedings, Okuonghae acted as a financial hub for international cybercriminals from 2019 through December 2023.

To systematically obfuscate the origins of the stolen cash, Okuonghae:

  • Opened numerous fraudulent and personal bank accounts across at least seven different financial institutions.

  • Allowed international and domestic proceeds from various internet scams to be deposited directly into his accounts.

  • Rapidly cycled the illicit funds out of those accounts to shield the primary scammers from law enforcement tracking.

What is a ‘Pig Butchering’ Scam?

The investigation highlighted Okuonghae’s connection to “pig butchering” (sha zhu pan), an increasingly sophisticated financial fraud combining elements of romance scams and fraudulent investment platforms.

Federal authorities outlined the manipulative lifecycle of the scheme:

  1. The “Fattening”: Scammers build an intense, weeks-long emotional or romantic rapport with victims entirely online via dating apps or social media.

  2. The Hook: Once trust is established, the perpetrator convinces the victim to invest in a “high-yield” cryptocurrency or foreign exchange platform, which is entirely simulated and controlled by the fraudsters.

  3. The “Slaughter”: After the victim deposits massive sums of money—often their entire life savings—the platform locks up, the funds disappear, and the scammers sever all communication.

Federal Accountability

The prosecution underscores an aggressive push by the Department of Justice to dismantle the domestic financial infrastructure that keeps global cyber syndicates operational.

U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer credited the successful investigation to the special agents of the FBI’s Newark Field Office, led by Special Agent in Charge Stefanie Roddy.

Cybersecurity Warning: Federal law enforcement urges New Jersey residents to remain incredibly cautious when dealing with individuals met online who pivot conversations toward investment opportunities, cryptocurrency, or urgent wire transfers.
