Ridgewood NJ, Northwest Bergen Central Dispatch Public Safety Telecommunicators (PST) took a 9-1-1 call for a 12-month-old baby not breathing, turning blue. She was able to assist the child’s parents with administering CPR over the phone and bringing the baby back to life before Police/ EMS arrived on scene.
The call occurred on August 17th, 2023, at 0819 HRS. Public Safety Telecommunicator (PST) Supervisor Erica Brown #507 took the 9-1-1 call. The father of the 12-month-old child reported that the “baby is not responding, she’s turning blue, not breathing”. PST Brown, who is a trained Emergency Medical Dispatcher, immediately began using the State of NJ Emergency Dispatch Guidecards. Once it was determined the baby was not breathing PST Brown immediately began instructing the parents on CPR. The mother did one set of chest compressions, and then gave mouth to mouth. Once the mother gave mouth to mouth the baby started to cry. This was all in less than 2 ½ minutes from the start of the call. Within another 2 minutes emergency responders were entering the apartment (4 ½ minutes from start of the call). The child was subsequently transported to Valley Hospital for evaluation.
Ridgewood Police, Ridgewood Fire Department, Ridgewood EMS, Valley Paramedics responded to the scene.
