NYACK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Students suspected of being drunk may soon have to take a breath test in one Rockland County community.

The Nyack Board of Education has been discussing the proposal for months, and it’s on the agenda for Tuesday night’s board meeting.

Under the policy, any student who appears intoxicated would be administered two breath tests within 10 minutes, WCBS 880’s Sean Adams reported. It would apply to students in school and at school-sponsored events, including dances, CBS2 reported.

  1. Sounds like something that should be consider.

  2. How about the same rules for teachers

  3. Did Ridgewood repeal the ordinance that allowed police to enter a home if they suspect underage drinking? It never sounded legal and it was wrongly used on more than one occasion.

  4. May be better testing for illegal drugs.

  5. Can we extend it to Village Council meetings for council members and speakers? Might shorten those meetings a bit.

  6. Terrible idea.

    1) These tests are expensive to administer and open up lots of questions about equal application.
    2) The schools and community are better off when kids are at events like this. If you are going to treat kids like parole violators and give breath analyzers to anyone a teacher thinks is drinking (giggling girl, Irish kid with a red face, long haired stoner type) then you start to decrease attendance. Those kids will still go somewhere on Friday night it just wont be to a school event. You then start to create property crime issues and more dangerous situations where kids are not supervised.

The rules should be behavior based. If someone is acting as if they are intoxicated then deal with the behavior and the possible substance abuse. If they have a flushed face but are behaving fine then keep a watch but dont react until there is behavior that warrants intervention.

  7. May be better testing for illegal drugs.

    … or legal ones…

  8. 3:29pm so true.
