Huntington NY, according to Dr David Butchin, Huntington Hospital’s Director of Bariatric Surgery, has over 20 years expeience and is a Northwell Health physcian hospitals are reporting a higher number of coronavirus patients that are overwieght or obese and suffer from diabetes.

The United States has one of the highest obesity rates in the world, being overwieght puts those at a greater risk of being hospitalized with Covid-19. Doctors say the immune system of obese people makes them more likely to suffer serious complications or die from infections, such as the flu.  Many with a BMI of over 40 suffer from breathing problems that range from a shortness of breath to a life threatening condition known as obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS).Excess weight can make it difficult for the lungs to expand and inhale oxygen. Starved of oxygen, organs can begin to fail. The lungs tend fail faster with Covid-19.
