One of a Kind Virtual 5K Adds an Ultra Marathon

the staff of the Ridggewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Brian Gatens of Ridgewood, NJ is an ultra-endurance adventure racer, competing in round- the-clock races involving trail running, mountain biking, kayak paddling, and orienteering. This year, with his race season cancelled due to Covid-19, he is re-directing his efforts to the Verizon Virtual Corporate Classic 5K

The annual event, traditionally held in Morristown, NJ for the last 14 years, is “Bringing the Course to You” this year, having created 19 new and exclusively measured 5K courses scattered among five (5) New Jersey counties. Runners may choose one of the courses convenient to either home or work and continue to participate.

Gatens, however, has chosen ALL 19! Over Labor Day weekend, he will run all of the courses continuously, biking from course to course in “The Verizon Virtual Project 19X.” The monumental solo effort, involving 57 miles of running and over 200 miles of cycling, is being done as a fundraiser for the event’s beneficiary, JBWS, the Morristown-based non- profit providing support services to victims of domestic violence. “Undertaking a safe and solo event in these times, and combining that with supporting a wonderful organization such as JBWS, is my way of turning a negative into a positive,” says Gatens. “I’m happy to do what I can to help.”

All 19 courses are featured in detail on the event’s website, Registration remains open through September 17, 2020.
