Princeton NJ, Oppenheimer, a cinematic sensation that shattered box office records and earned an impressive array of accolades, including numerous Oscar nominations, had significant portions of its filming conducted right here in New Jersey. Garnering the most nominations of any film in the 2024 award season, Oppenheimer proudly joins the illustrious lineup of notable motion pictures that have utilized the diverse landscapes of the Garden State as their backdrop.

With wins in seven coveted categories, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Director, Oppenheimer emerges as a genuine blockbuster, marking a significant triumph akin to The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King’s dominance in 2004.

However, Oppenheimer’s success is not a solitary feat, as several other distinguished productions filmed in New Jersey have garnered major accolades in recent months. From Golden Globes to Emmy awards and the Sundance Film Festival, the spotlight has increasingly shone on productions that chose New Jersey as their filming location.

Speaking on this burgeoning trend, NJEDA Chief Executive Officer Tim Sullivan expressed optimism about the state’s growing prominence in the film industry. Under Governor Phil Murphy’s leadership, New Jersey is poised to capitalize on this momentum, attracting new productions that not only create job opportunities but also support local businesses.

Oppenheimer, a beneficiary of the NJEDA Film and Digital Tax Credit program, received a whopping 13 Oscar nominations, with key scenes filmed at prestigious locations such as Princeton University and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.

Another notable contender, Killers of the Flower Moon, received 10 Oscar nominations, featuring the talent of actor Peter Yorn, who hails from Montville, and renowned film editor Thelma Schoonmaker, a Ridgewood native.

Ramy Youssef, originally from Rutherford, showcased his talent in Poor Things, which received 11 nominations, while The Holdovers, starring Atlantic County native Dominic Sessa, garnered five nominations.

Succession, a critically acclaimed HBO drama, received recognition at both the Emmy and Golden Globe awards, with extensive filming for its final season taking place in New Jersey locations such as CNBC Studios, NBCUniversal Technology Center in Englewood Cliffs, and Liberty State Park in Jersey City.

The 2024 Sundance Film Festival featured seven productions filmed in New Jersey, marking a significant milestone in the state’s film industry. Spanning across various counties, these productions underscore New Jersey’s diverse and vibrant landscapes as desirable filming destinations.

Thanks to the state’s Film Tax Credit Program, which offers lucrative incentives to eligible production companies, New Jersey has become an attractive hub for filmmaking, fostering economic growth and providing a platform for local talent to shine. With nearly 150 productions to-date benefiting from the program, the resurgence of the film industry in the Garden State promises exciting opportunities for all stakeholders involved.
