Hospital sets patient record as virus spreads

Hospital sets patient record as virus spreads

Keith BieryGolick,

Medical officials admitted a record number of children to a local hospital over the weekend because of what they believe to be a rare respiratory virus spreading throughout the country.

Although there’s been no confirmed cases of the enterovirus at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, officials admitted 540 patients Friday, said Dr. Derek Wheeler, associate chief of staff at the hospital.

The previous record was around 515, Wheeler said.

Some reports out of Missouri and Colorado suggest the virus, with symptoms similar to the common cold, brought sicker patients to hospitals, Wheeler said.

“We’re just seeing the (increased) volumes, we haven’t seen (patients) sicker than usual yet,” he said.

Hospitals from other states have placed restrictions on visitations, but Wheeler said there are no plans to do that in Cincinnati.

The virus is similar to what doctors treat during cold and flu season. That means nothing really changes if a child comes down with the rare virus, he said.

“The bottom line is this is a virus you wouldn’t treat with antibiotics, so other than the (high-level of) interest, there’s no reason we would need to know it’s an enterovirus,” Wheeler said.

This particular type of enterovirus — EV-D68 — is uncommon, but not new. It was first identified in the 1960s.

New N.J. bond disclosure warns of revenue shortfall, impact of casino closures

THE RECORD

After scrambling earlier this year to close a $1 billion budget shortfall, New Jersey is now warning investors that the state could already be facing new revenue problems.

In a bond disclosure made public Tuesday afternoon, state officials said tax collections likely fell about $275 million short of the amount expected when the last fiscal year ended June 30.

The disclosure also warned the state may not meet casino revenue targets for the current fiscal year amid recent closings in Atlantic City. That could bring on spending cuts or other adjustments to keep the budget balanced as required by the state constitution.

Though final auditing of the last fiscal year is still underway, the disclosure from the state Department of Treasury warned the state may not have reached its goal of maintaining a $300 million surplus fund.

“The state, at this time, continues to work toward, but cannot give assurances of, realizing a final undesignated fund balance of $300 million,” the disclosure said.

RIDGEWOOD — Work has been slow on a controversial street improvement project that has frustrated village officials exploring their options.

Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld said construction recently resumed on the Garber Square project, following a three-month gap. But things are proceeding “very, very slowly,” she said, before suggesting Ridgewood officials consider hiring another contractor to finish the job.

“We were hoping to be a lot farther” along with the project, Sonenfeld said, adding the contractor “is aware we are not happy.

RIDGEWOOD — The village will be getting some much-needed parking along North Walnut Street under the terms outlined in a 42-page bid soliciting potential developers for the downtown’s redevelopment zone.

A new Request for Proposal and Qualifications, or RFP, has been issued by Ridgewood officials and seeks the redevelopment of 10 properties the heart of the Central Business District.

The 2.07 acres — some of it municipally owned — was designated a “redevelopment zone” by officials in 2007, which permits mostly retail and restaurant uses.

The redevelopment zone — currently the site of an ice cream shop, an 89-space parking lot, a mechanic’s shop, restaurants and retail stores — further allows for residential developments and is already being considered by at least one developer for a future assisted-living facility for seniors.

The RFP states that all proposals and plans from interested developers must be submitted by December and must include some manner of parking garage.

While an issue for decades, the village’s lack of parking has become an increasing concern for businesses and residents.

Charlotte Samuels cried her way across the English Channel.

She cried because she is small and her challenge was big: A 16-year-old girl chasing a world record, swimming for miles in open water through the blind dark night.

She cried because she was lucky: Most channel attempts require a year of planning and worry, but somehow she hired a boat and a crew in weeks.

She cried because she is loved: As she sprinted the final three miles to France, her parents chanted encouragement every time she lifted her head for air.

A President Whose Assurances Have Come Back to Haunt Him

A President Whose Assurances Have Come Back to Haunt Him

By PETER BAKERSEPT. 8, 2014

WASHINGTON — When President Obama addresses the nation on Wednesday to explain his plan to defeat Islamic extremists in Iraq and Syria, it is a fair bet he will not call them the “JV team.”

Nor does he seem likely to describe Iraq as “sovereign, stable and self-reliant” with a “representative government.” And presumably he will not assert after more than a decade of conflict that “the tide of war is receding.”

As he seeks to rally Americans behind a new military campaign in the Middle East, Mr. Obama finds his own past statements coming back to haunt him. Time and again, he has expressed assessments of the world that in the harsh glare of hindsight look out of kilter with the changed reality he now confronts.

In making his speech, Mr. Obama faces the challenge of reconciling those views with the new mission he is presenting to the American public to recommit the armed forces of the United States to the region he tried to leave. Rather than a junior varsity nuisance, he will try to convince Americans that the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria represents a clear threat to national security in a state that is hardly stable. And he will seek to win patience for more war from a public that wishes it really was receding.

To Mr. Obama’s critics, the disparity between the president’s previous statements and today’s reality reflects not simply poorly chosen words but a fundamentally misguided view of the world. Rather than clearly see the persistent dangers as the United States approaches the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, they said, Mr. Obama perpetually imagines a world as he wishes it were.

The Math Behind Your Property Tax Bill

Sep. 09

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

When more than 50% of New Jersey state aid is dedicated to 5% of our schools, Save Jerseyans, thanks largely to the New Jersey Supreme Court’s interference, then no one should be surprised when New Jersey’s property taxes are the highest in the nation. It’s simple math… something that they’re not doing a particularly good job of teaching in those 5%-districts! Or many of the rest of them, too, if we’re being honest.

School funding is one of our favorite topics at Save Jersey; if you’re a visual learner, here’s a particularly excellent explanatory video dropped by the Assembly GOP on Tuesday. It’s hard to ignore the problem when the numbers are staring right back at you…

Commuters simply cant take the Bridgegate Scandal Serious

Commuters simply cant take the Bridgegate Scandal Serious
September 9th 2014
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
So its been one year since the so called GWB Scandal and mean while commuters continue to suffer the daily delays with hardly a peep from the press .Its funny how 50 years on non stop traffic delays only get noticed the one time a third rate politician gets inconvenienced .

The George Washington Bridge, recently associated with a political scandal, has been  a symbol of frustration and gridlock for daily commuters for years .

As a reminder on Thursday June 11th traffic stalled in New Jersey and New York following an early-morning fatal crash on the GWB . Two tractor-trailers heading east crashed shortly after 2 a.m. on the bi-level bridge’s upper deck. Port Authority Police reported that the driver in the rear truck died when the vehicle became wedged under the other truck’s trailer. Port Authority Police Capt. Ron Shindel went on to say the driver in the lead truck was emotionally shaken and was taken to a hospital .

While September 11 will be the anniversary of the 9/11 Islamic terrorist murder of 3000 American citizens , it will also be the 2 month anniversary of the death of one truck driver killed on the GWB resulting in a 7 hour back up  .

Governor Chris Christie meanwhile wrote off Democrats’ Bridgegate anniversary calling it “nakedly partisan” and commuters had stronger language for it ,namely self-serving , stupid ,out of touch and offensive.

Former Secretary of State and Former Treasury Secretary James A. Baker, III Endorses Jeff Bell for U.S. Senate

September 8, 2014

James A. Baker, III, the 61st Secretary of State and 67th U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, endorsed New Jersey Republican Senate nominee Jeff Bell on Monday and praised his monetary reform plan that is at the centerpiece of his campaign.

Baker in a statement said, “Jeff Bell was a key man in getting Ronald Reagan’s successful economic policies off the ground and now his advocacy for a dollar as good as gold is what’s needed in the U.S. Senate.”

Bell responded, “James Baker is one of America’s most distinguished public servants. He played a leading role in making the U.S. into the world’s only superpower and I am enthused that he supports my economic plan to restore the kind of prosperity we had in the ’80s and ’90s.”

Portraits for Business and Lifestyle

In today’s modern age with all the social media:  facebook, linkedin, twitter, Instagram and so on its critical that we showcase ourselves as we wish the world to see us.  People tap into your life through these social media websites and peer into your world.  I offer Business and Lifestyle photo sessions to showcase the way you want to be viewed.  Its a natural photojournalist approach that has a modern contemporary feel to it.  No one wants to see overly posed photographs that appear to pretentious, but rather natural and artistic photographs.  Images say it all.  If you are running your own business, looking for employment, getting back into the dating scene, or simply longing for images of you with your loved ones for memory keepsakes this is perfect solution.

A simple headshot might seem like something anybody could do, but there are a lot of nuances that people don’t think about. What kind of lighting do you want? What should be in the background? Do you want to present yourself in formal attire or in something more casual? Should the image show you working or just smiling at the camera? These are all questions that a skilled photographer can answer, and  be able to put you in just the right position to get the perfect shot.

If you have a business to promote, a good headshot can give your company a personal touch by giving customers a chance to identify with the person you choose to be the face of your business. If you are searching for a job, you can use a commercial picture to draw more attention to your application, and give potential employers an idea of whom they will be hiring. In any of these scenarios, having a commercial photographer on hand will help you make these decisions and properly promote yourself. You will be able to set just the right tone for anything you want to do.

I offer on location and or in studio sessions. Suggested packages are listed on our website:  www.ArtChickPhotography.com – Call Kristine 215-650-7052

Ridgewood Girl Scout is keeping food drive fresh

Last summer, as a group of Passaic campers complained about their food, Ridgewood Girl Scout Hayley Punjabi looked guiltily at her healthful, filling meal. The Girl Scout-led summer camp in Passaic, which Punjabi interned at, provided free state lunches for low-income children. In terms of their quality, Punjabi saw the lunches as “very mediocre.”

“It was really sad, and this is like 15 minutes from Ridgewood, New Jersey,” Punjabi said. “I would bring a nice salad and a whole food lunch, and I would just feel so bad.”

The campers were some of “the nicest girls I’ve ever met,” the Ridgewood High School (RHS) senior recalled, so it hurt her to hear them commenting about their food – saying things like “it’s the same thing every day” and “I’m hungry.”

Now, Punjabi is doing something about it.

In an attempt to get filling, healthy food to low-income people, she has organized special food drives for the clients of Social Services Association of Ridgewood and Vicinity (SSA). The first drive is taking place tomorrow, Sept. 9 and the second one will be Tuesday, Sept. 16, according to Punjabi. Instead of calling for the typical salt-and-fat-heavy non-perishable goods, Punjabi is asking only for fresh fruits and vegetables.

Both drives will take place at the Ridgewood train station headquarters of the SSA from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ridgewood Planning Board details process, payment for hearings

“Rights” related to money spent by amendment applicants on hearings before the Ridgewood Planning Board – including the payment of village professionals, as detailed in Ordinance 3066 – were among the topics discussed during a review on Tuesday of proper board behavior.

The idea that Ridgewood’s applicants are afforded additional rights – beyond those afforded to applicants in other communities, who may not foot the bill for municipal experts during the hearing process – was ultimately rejected by the board attorneys.

But one key point was revealed: Ridgewood has the right to foot the bill for a master plan amendment application hearing, with or without Ordinance 3066 on the books, and thereby bring only its own experts in for a hearing, rather than also including an applicants’ experts.

During the discussion, Planning Board Attorney Gail Price also presented a legal overview regarding Open Public Meetings Act requirements and board obligations related to the Municipal Land Use Law (MLUL).
