Palisades Park NJ, Two Palisades Park police officers who sued the borough over a hostile work environment and retaliation have received settlements totaling $300,000, along with long-awaited promotions.
Officers George and Christopher Beck Receive Promotions and Settlements
Officers George Beck and his brother Christopher Beck filed lawsuits in 2022, alleging mistreatment within the department. As part of the settlement approved on December 30, 2024, George Beck was promoted to police captain and awarded $175,000, while Christopher Beck was promoted to lieutenant and received $125,000.
A Troubled History: Lawsuits and Leadership Instability
This latest settlement is yet another chapter in the borough’s long history of police department controversies. Over the past decade, the department has cycled through six police chiefs and faced multiple lawsuits, suspensions, and internal disputes.
Palisades Park’s police troubles date back to the 1990s, when some officers were exposed for running a burglary ring, bringing unwanted national attention. Today, the department remains in turmoil, currently led by yet another interim officer in charge.
Borough Officials Seek Resolution
In response to the settlements, borough spokesperson Sara Rossi stated:
“The borough believes that settling these cases and allowing all parties to move forward amicably is in the best interests of Palisades Park taxpayers, and we congratulate these officers on their promotions.”
Allegations Against Leadership
George Beck’s lawsuit described years of harassment and abusive behavior from Capt. Shawn Lee, the current officer in charge. His legal complaint outlined disturbing experiences dating back to 2016, culminating in a written reprimand issued last month.
Christopher Beck’s lawsuit claimed that Lee and a councilman created a hostile work environment, leading to permanent damage to his professional and personal reputation while denying him a promotion he had earned on merit.
Looking Ahead
While the $300,000 settlement and officer promotions bring some closure to these cases, Palisades Park’s police department still faces unresolved challenges. With an ongoing leadership crisis and a history of internal conflict, the borough must address deeper structural issues to restore stability and public trust.
