Paramus Retail Theft Escalates: Two Arrested After Dollar Tree Manager Assaulted

Paramus NJ, A routine shoplifting incident at a local Paramus shopping center quickly escalated into a violent physical altercation, leaving a store manager injured and two Bergen County residents facing severe felony charges.

The incident, which took place at the Dollar Tree located in the Shoppes at IV (275 Route 4 West, Paramus, NJ), highlights a growing concern over retail theft turning confrontational.

From Shoplifting to Second-Degree Robbery

According to local police, authorities responded to a call at the Route 4 West discount store around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Upon arrival, officers encountered the store manager, who showed visible signs of a physical struggle and sustained a laceration to her left bicep.

The manager reported that she had confronted a man and a woman attempting to shoplift approximately $60 worth of health and beauty products. Instead of complying, the suspects allegedly turned violent to make their escape. Police reports state the duo grabbed the manager’s hair, bent her fingers, and forcefully shoved her arm aside to clear their path.

The Suspects and the Foot Chase

Following the assault, the suspects fled the scene on foot, heading east toward a nearby Rolls-Royce dealership. Witnesses described the fleeing shoplifters as a white male in a gray shirt and black pants, and a white female wearing a gray hat, black tank top, and black shorts.

Thanks to swift police coordination, Officer Jason Hrbek tracked down and intercepted the suspects near Rutgers Place and Oxford Terrace in neighboring River Edge. Both individuals were taken into custody without further incident.

The suspects have been identified as:

• Sonya Schoenbrunn, 43, of Closter, NJ

• Alan Edelstein, 60, of Hackensack, NJ

Severe Legal Consequences for a $60 Theft

While the stolen merchandise was valued at just $60, the use of physical force instantly upgraded the shoplifting attempt to a felony. Both Schoenbrunn and Edelstein have been hit with second-degree robbery charges.

Following their arrest, Schoenbrunn was transported to the Bergen County Jail to await her initial court appearance. Edelstein was released on his own recognizance pending further legal proceedings.
