Glen Rock NJ, mail theft and check fraud are on the rise in Glen Rock and surrounding communities, with more residents reporting stolen mail and altered checks. Law enforcement, including federal agents from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, is actively investigating the incidents.
Thousands Stolen from Local Mailboxes
On Thursday, a Ridgewood resident reported mailing checks from Glen Rock public mailboxes on two occasions in February. These checks, totaling around $7,000, were intercepted, altered, and cashed by unknown criminals, police said.
A few days earlier, on March 3, a Glen Rock resident discovered that a $32.68 check payable to AT&T had been altered to $1,900.43 and cashed by an unfamiliar recipient. The report did not specify whether the check had been mailed or stolen another way.
Expanding Investigation & Regional Impact
The Glen Rock Police Department initially began investigating mailbox theft and check fraud in early February. However, as cases continued to emerge, authorities confirmed that similar crimes have been reported in other nearby towns.
“The Glen Rock Police Department continues to receive reports from residents and local businesses who have been the victims of check fraud after mailing legitimate checks via the U.S. Postal Service,” the department said in a statement.
According to police, in each case, the stolen checks were intercepted and altered, with thieves even using victims’ bank account information to create fraudulent checks.
How to Protect Yourself from Mail Theft
Authorities urge residents to take precautions when mailing checks:
✅ Use secure payment methods, such as online bill pay or direct transfers.
✅ Drop mail inside post office locations rather than public mailboxes.
✅ Check your bank statements regularly for suspicious activity.
✅ Report stolen mail or fraudulent transactions immediately to your bank and local police.
As investigations continue, law enforcement officials are working closely with federal agents to track down those responsible.
🚨 If you suspect mail theft or check fraud, report it to the Glen Rock Police Department or the U.S. Postal Inspection Service immediately.

Glen Rock stole that rock from Ridgewood back in 1695.
Yeah? Come get it, if you’re tough enough.
3 of my checks were stolen from the mailbox in front of the Waldwick Post Office several years ago. The thief altered the checks and attempted to cash them.
Drop mail in the mail slot inside the post office.
