Ridgewood NJ, President Joe Biden announced via Twitter on Sunday that he is stepping down from the 2024 presidential race. This decision follows growing concerns about his performance and health, particularly after his June debate against former President Donald Trump, where Biden appeared confused and struggled with his answers.

Biden’s Statement

Biden, 81, emphasized his dedication to serving the American people and highlighted his achievements throughout his presidency. In his tweet, he expressed that stepping down was in the best interest of both his party and the country.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote.

He also conveyed his support for Vice President Kamala Harris, endorsing her as the Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential race.

Health Concerns and Recent Developments

Currently in Delaware after being diagnosed with COVID-19, Biden will address the nation about his decision later. His announcement comes amidst ongoing concerns about his health and fitness for office. Reports indicate that aides have taken measures to minimize the effects of his age, such as escorting him to and from Marine One and having him use shorter stairs to board Air Force One. Additionally, a neurologist and Parkinson’s disease specialist had visited the White House several times in recent months.

Biden’s Gratitude and Endorsement

In his statement, Biden thanked those who supported his reelection efforts and praised Vice President Harris for her partnership.

“For now, let me express my deepest gratitude to all those who have worked so hard to see me reelected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all this work. And let me express my heartfelt appreciation to the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me,” he wrote.

He further endorsed Harris in a separate tweet, describing his decision to choose her as his vice president as the best choice for his 2020 campaign and supporting her as the party’s nominee for 2024.

The Democratic Party’s Next Steps

Biden’s withdrawal leaves the Democratic Party without a clear nominee just weeks before its convention. While some Democrats advocate for a seamless transition to Harris, others suggest a rushed primary or open convention. Potential nominees include California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Reactions and Political Implications

The push for Biden to step down intensified after his debate performance, but he managed to buy time with a solid showing at a NATO press conference. However, key Democratic leaders, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, ultimately urged him to withdraw, citing concerns about his poll numbers and the potential impact on down-ballot races.

Former President Donald Trump responded to Biden’s announcement on Truth Social, asserting that Biden was “not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve” and “never was.”
