Ridgewood NJ, around 10:25 a.m. on Friday morning, an earthquake struck New Jersey, with its effects felt across much of the state as well as parts of Connecticut, Philadelphia, and New York. While the magnitude of the earthquake has not been officially reported, preliminary estimates suggest it may range between 4.0 and 5.0, with some estimates indicating 4.7 to 4.8.

The earthquake, lasting approximately 10 seconds, originated in Whitehouse Station, NJ, according to the US Geological Survey. Reports from residents described shaking floors in homes and offices, while outdoor observations noted visible movement in bushes and trees, resembling the effects of high winds.

As of now, there have been no reports of significant damage caused by the earthquake. It is worth noting that this event occurred just one day after Taiwan experienced a severe earthquake of its own.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM COUNTY EXECUTIVE TEDESCO:
At approximately 10:23AM, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake occurred, centered in Hunterdon County, that was felt throughout the tri-state area.
Thankfully, at this time, there have been no reports of injuries or major structural damage in Bergen County.
The County activated the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to Level 2. All County buildings and critical infrastructure were inspected and were found to be without damage.
We will continue to monitor this situation with local law enforcement agencies.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) received some heat after she said , that the 4.8 magnitude earthquake that shook New York hit “west of Manhattan” rather than mentioning New Jersey.

While the  USGS reported the quake occurred about 7 miles north of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. It indicated that the quake might have been felt by more than 42 million people. There were several aftershocks later in the day, including one with a magnitude of 4.0.

Several Ridgewood residents said they felt a rattle indoors , but others who were out and about including local letter carriers said they didn’t notice anything. We noticed all the cell phone emergency notifications and thought we were being pranked. The subway ride back to Penn Station was a bit unnerving.

The Quake hit on the heels of the April Nor’easter  that left almost 700,000 customers were without power across the Northeast yesterday as a powerful storm system brought high winds and more than 2 feet of snow to some locations in the region. Three people were killed in separate incidents after trees fell on their vehicles.

Meteorologists said the storm was the biggest April nor’easter to hit the area since 2020. The weather phenomenon occurs when Arctic air carried southward from Canada by the jet stream meets warmer, moist air off the Atlantic coast. See a video from the Massachusetts coast here, along with photos from the upper Northeast.

The Quake also followed a far larger quake in Taiwan that left at least nine people dead and over 1,000 injured , while scores of people are trapped in rubble after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the island’s eastern coast Wednesday morning local time. The casualties are expected to rise as rescue efforts continue. The earthquake is the strongest to hit Taiwan since 1999 when a 7.7 magnitude quake killed roughly 2,400 people.

  1. It was the strongest quake in NJ since 1938.

  2. I’m an advocate of clean nuclear power, properly sited. Fortunately Indian Point in Buchanan NY is being decommissioned since the morons decide to site it on the ‘ramapo fault’ line.

  3. And just before a solar eclipse. End of days?

    1. Locusts next.

  4. Hope everyone ran out to get milk and toilet paper before it ran out!

    1. It’s probably a fault’s fault.

    2. Plate tectonics are woke.
