Reader asks Does the entire town of Ridgewood have to look like a German bunker?

Village of Ridgewood : Van Neste Memorial Park "Revival" project

Apparently they are quietly going to pull up the bricks with donors’ names on them from when the park was fixed up as a resident project and move them somewhere so they can put more concrete down so they can put more lighting up. Do people even know this is happening? Does the entire town have to look like a German bunker? I like the bricks and for all these years have enjoyed showing friends my name on one of them. I don’t want them moved

  1. The bricks never looked very good

That being said, I don’t want to spend any money on the park.

  2. I agree. Our grandchildren love looking for ours. And concrete is just plain ugly! Ridgewood has tons of needs, but not that. Also, any chance of removing the planters in front of Greek to Me? It totally limits those spaces to someone who is very agile or otherwise the passenger can’t get out of the car.

  3. It’s hard to pick up Greek take out…if you can’t get out of your car!

  4. New council is unable to remove the planters in front of Greek to Me. They don’t have enough courage to go after Vagianos.

  5. This project should not even crack the top 100 things the Village should spend money on. The bricks look fine.

  6. Paulies wall means rules don’t apply to the special people.

  7. Leave the park alone, it is fine the way it is.

  8. I like the bricks. I like the park. Leave it alone. Here a revenue opportunity: instead of harassing residents over leaves or watering, let’s issue fines for any illegal walls in the CBD? K-ching!

  9. Leave the park, take the illegal planters

  10. I vote for a playground in Van Nes. With a fountain in it. Ala Union Square. It would be great for getting people into town. Ice cream and the playground or run some errands and stop at the playground. Great too for waiting online at no reservations brunch spots. but of course that means changing something so it will never be allowed to happen….

  11. 2.13 adding a nice playground at the pending concrete pool bonding at Graydon renewal plan.to benefit all the taxpayers.

  12. 3:12pm – to benefit the high density apartments.

  13. Those planters are a big middle finger to the rest of RW…

  14. 4.22 But they are special….election lost time for a new at bat

  15. Hoboken has all the things you need 2:13 or mabeNYC

  16. The VM wants to do this to the park. She must have missed the dead trees and the weed in the wells along E Ridgewood Ave CBD. The place is going to hell and she is look for new project. How about maintaining the stuff you have first. Is this they do thing in the private sector ?

  17. 6:47 yes they do. and there is no reason Ridgewood shouldn’t also have them. Why do we want totally unused space in the middle of town? There is almost never anyone in that park except when there is an event there. Why not make it a beautiful modern playground that will add some energy to our CBD and create a destination in town for young families? No one is saying to cut down trees. No one wants to make it low income housing. People are just suggesting that we make it a space where people will want to go. So why is there such outcry? Oh that’s right. Because CHANGE is a 4 letter word in this town.

  18. 8:39 what planet do you come from? People are in Van Neste all the time, reading kids playing, etc. Change is not a four letter word in this town. But sensible change is what people are calling for. Simply remodeling the Van Neste Park is a ridiculous expense. I am with 9:11 who says that the dead trees along the avenue should be replaced and flowers should be planted in the wells. Spruce the place up for god’s sake, maintain it. The downtown looks like crap.

  19. 839: perhaps leaving Brooklyn wasn’t such a great idea. All the newbie temporary residents (here for a 10 year stay while the rugrats are in school) love to piss away tax money on Astro turf, sports fields, water parks and playgrounds. H ow about you get a go-fund-me page, buy an empty lot and do it yourself , out of view of th public

  20. How can same company be getting contracts for snow removals, shed demolitions, paves, concrete stairs – everything? When the council members approve those ‘resolutions’ to spend our money, do they EVER ask to check the ‘three bids’, and ‘where was the project advertised’?
