Councilman Voigt may be confused because liars are being outed and that is not supposed to happen in the Aronsohn playbook. Did anybody hear what Matt Rogers said about refusing perpetual troublemakers the right to speak unless they applied for reinstatement in writing and said they wouldn’t do it any more? Halaby and Lehmann should be so censured. Nobody has the right to appear at meeting after meeting and harangue the council out of personal anger and spite. It sets a dreadful tone for the meeting and serves no purpose except to gratify the hysterical whims of those who are unhappy about who won the last election. Halaby and Lehmann should have that rule applied to them immediately. They have more than earned it. It’s embarrassing that they (Halaby in particular) are permitted to continue to appear time after time and spew their vicious bile. That is most assuredly not what the public comment section of the meeting is for. As for allowing Mr. Lehmann to be on a very important board, much less preside over it, he absolutely must be removed. He must know he was risking that with his email and mailer of hate and lies. I can’t imagine letting him stay. He should be barred for life from membership on any appointed committee, commission or board. I hope the council will do this right away.
The easiest way to deal with Rurik Halaby is to let him speak for exactly the time allowed, then have him sit down.
Do not engage or respond. Make believe he isn’t even there.
Spend the 5 minutes while he is spewing his babble filing your nails or checking your email.
This will save the legal fees you would spend losing your case in court trying to regulate speech.

I agree. Let him say whatever he wants to during his 3 or 5 minute time allotment. A guy in Hoboken was awarded $50K after the Hoboken Council ejected him from a public meeting for saying something they didn’t want to hear. Let’s not make Halaby rich just because we don’t like him.
Let them speak and then move on. The mayor buried the headline of what should have been a positive meeting by dwelling on these fools.
Why is the mayor engaging these people? I agree with the comments here that they should be allowed to speak and let them move on. The first 45 minutes of the last village council meeting were a disgrace.

Freedom of speech is protected by the First Ammendmentb but it does not mean you can go to council meetings and attack sitting council members with personal comments and/or disregard time limits. They have their own code of conduct for the meetings they run.

Clearly, they are both unbalanced and the only apporach is to let them talk, disregard what they say and move on. So long as they do not pose a physical threat to anyone, they should be allowed to speak.
