Reader says its a mistake to assume residents who oppose changes in the master plan are for the status quo

I don’t think that anyone opposing amendments to the Master Plan favors keeping a vacant car dealership. Those opposed to development in town whether by Valley or by real estate developers oppose special interests misrepresenting the impact of their proposed projects.

Developers told us with a straight face that putting in hundreds of apartments will have no negative impact on traffic and will put no additional children into the school system. Seems like a follow up study would be in order before we break ground.

And then there’s Valley and their parade of “experts” claiming among other things that 1,000 additional parking spaces will not result in any additional traffic. Valley has been lying to us for so long that they and their obnoxious attorney have resorted to simply shouting down anyone that questions them or proposes an alternative to their tired and over baked expansion plan.

This town’s lack of vision and leadership has led us the the mercy of these special interests who are in business to make money for themselves and their shareholders. Period. It is not their job to care about any negative impact their project might have on the town. It has become clear that our public officials have neither the political will nor the inclination to stand up to these special interests. Let’s hope that our friends and neighbors have the stamina to insist on better treatment until we can get a couple of competent people into office.

  1. Why are there two groups, Concerned Residents and the Valley group. In the end aren’t their goals the same?

One person who attended the meeting last night posted on Facebook that he saw a lot of residents from the west side at the meeting about the downtown. These west side residents were not in attendance at the Stop Valley meetings.

Overdevelopment is bad for the town when it is condos or a hospital in a residential neighborhood. Why can’t we all get together on this?

Amy, where does your group stand on the Valley development? Do you support Stop Valley?

  2. I support Valley.

  3. #2 very well thought out. You are a deep thinker.

Were any of the residents from the East side in attendance at the meetings for the water tank issue?

  5. Was the water tank a change to the master plan?

Did it benefit private business and have an impact on traffic and the schools?

It seems like it was more an issue similar to development of the fields and erecting lights so that kids can play till all hours of the night.

    One hand washes the other.
Support my concerns I’ll support yours.
No help from you? Don’t expect any from me.

  7. #6. So, if one person from Stop Valley supported your opposition to the water tank you will support the Stop Valley group? You are easy.

Where do the Concerned Residents stand on the Valley expansion?

  8. #7. your words, not mine.
Just don’t expect any sympathy for your cause from those who didn’t receive your support for theirs.

  9. clearly a static water tank expansion and a doubling of valley, parking decks, etc. are comparable.

    -thed.

If someone lived in the proximity of the tank they would be.

  11. But #8, our Planning Board Meetings started first! You weren’t there because the water tank replacement had not been invented yet.

And your problem, great as it was, was solved in a relatively short time frame. I never had a chance to express my outrage over the replacement of the water tank by the Ridgewood Water Department for the benefit of all residents.

  12. #11 Your sarcastic response is another example of why none of my neighbors and friends, all of whom are long time Village residents, would support your group… ever.

  13. That how they win pit one group against the other.

  14. Help me out here, what water tank are we talking about?

  15. This silliness about the water tower only proves the original point. The town needs people that will get involved and promote the greater good as opposed to ones that want only what’s good for them. The water tower could be torn down and gone in a day – though I doubt you’ll rally any support with the venom you spew. Unfortunately once they build Valley and the apartments we’re stuck with them. Enjoy the over crowded schools, downtown traffic jams and 10 years of dump trucks polluting the air around BF and Travell. Oh wait, none of that affects you personally. Never mind.

  16. #12. You think that your neighbors are as narrow minded as you? You just insulted them. You can’t even separate a change in the master plan from an update to a water tank In your head they have equal impact.

  17. So—- are the concerned residents and stop valley supporters on the same page as far as development and the master plan?

Can someone from those groups enlighten us? We can’t all pull in different directions.

Keep spewing your negative insults-it only shows what you self centered inconsiderate new residents are all about.
    Your battle won’t become ours.
Its ok for you newbies to move here and ‘change things’ as long as it suits YOU. (sports fields, water park @ graydon etc etc)
Look in the mirror if you want to see a fool.

  19. #18. Your response seems way off from what I posted. I did not say that I was in facor of changing the master plan or anything else. Where did the reference to Graydon come from?

I was pointing out that a change to the master plan for private development is not of the same magnitude as maintenance to the Ridgewood Water tank. And that little problem went away quickly.

    Calm down and read carefully.

I think in the end, the two groups are more aligned than not. Yes the “Citizens for a Better Ridgewood” tend to be west siders that may have sat out some of the early Valley meetings, but they have quickly come to realize that the processes are very similar and that they’d better sit in on the Valley meetings to see what to expect. They saw the worst of Valley’s behavior through their attorney Mr. Drill who not only does not care about any negative impact of Valley’s plan but has nothing but contempt for the residents. This was truly shocking to sit through.

Both organizations see special interests pulling out all of the stops to railroad their proposals through the Planning Board which seems quite sympathetic to anyone looking to develop or overdevelop our town.

  21. Maybe we could redevelop the properties downtown in to two auto dealers and a Town Garage – they could attract mechanics by noting the proximity to Ben & Jerry’s ! Oh, wait…

  22. Or Ridgewood DPW workers.
