The Franklin Street “Village Garage” lot was publicly targeted by the Village Council for condemnation as “blighted” as part of a redevelopment plan. The Village would rely on the decision in Kelo v. City of New London, 545 U.S. 469 (2005), a case decided by the U. S. Supreme Court involving the use of eminent domain to transfer land from one private owner to another private owner to further economic development. Construction of a municipal parking garage would then follow. $15 million in bond money was raised for that purpose, but when Village residents objected to the heavy-handed use of the eminent domain power, the plan was dropped and the money spent on other priorities. The current owners bought the property at that time at a relatively low price expecting to make a tidy profit in the near future. Obviously that didn’t exactly pan out for them.
So attractive.
What doesn’t this town object too? It’s such and eye sore and needs to be cleaned. Just watch the next post will be about why use Ridgewood tax dollars for down town. Big business trying to make money on Ridgewood all BS.. it’s the older Ridgewood population that hates change and everyone is out to get them. Also on the next post don’t forget to slam the old governing body of Ridgewood they are also out to get you.
then write a check and build a garage
I’m with you 10:37. I may be missing something but I will never understand why the town is willing to ‘preserve’ Schedler and it’s ‘historic’ value but not clean up what is clearly only going to get worse the longer the wait.
Here is a good post you see everytime “repave the parking lots” that thought process is going to help out the town a lot..
How about we clean up the old dilapidated buildings.
Just don’t let Ridgewood buy the Town Garage without having the remediation done by the bait and switch developers. They knew darn well what they were buying and could care less because they knew Ridgewood would come in and save them. Ridgewood just doesn’t need that property that badly.
It’s the Ridgewood free parking lot. Long may the blight rule!!!
9:55 call Hollywood .Town garage looks like the set of a Steven King Movie..
10:37 and 12:14… Don’t worry so much about the old coots stopping the unstoppable progress that this town so desperately needs. They’ll all be dead in an hour or 2 or on the next flight to Boca with the impending tax doom. We’re already prevailing as cooler heads are moving the current development forward. New stores, plenty of parking and a snappy new apartment for mom and dad to live in. It’s about time.
5:43 we are not dead yet and write the fat cat checks to VOR each year. Kids are indeed gone to own great lives.
Last play in developers book : make it an age issue divide the issue along older wiser we have been screwed too many times and the newer uber car residents.
They wont use a filthy dangerous garage either.they would park then walk like mom and dad.
Ps the mom dad dont want a snappy railroad flat either. TRAIN HORNS AT 445 not cool on fragile hearts nor ears.?
11:57 The train horns and rattling used to set off our burglar alarms on our old Broad Street building. I think the builders all think that if we’re old, we must be deaf, so we won’t hear anything anyway. You couldn’t pay me to buy an apartment there.
