Reader says the ONLY driving factor should be whether this would be of sufficient benefit to Ridgewood residents now and in the future for us to subsidize the Garage

godzilla

We are being used and abused. It’s dreadful. As said , the ONLY driving factor (as it were) should be whether this would be of sufficient benefit to Ridgewood residents now and in the future for us to subsidize it at a moment when property values are a huge concern due to the new tax laws and other factors. The answer is either. NO or PROBABLY NOT. Neither answer would promote forging ahead with this ludicrous project Yes, it has been discussed for decades. That might be attributable to indecision–or to the knowledge that it is a bad and dangerous idea. PLEASE, council, think about maintenance issues, safety issues, and more before you act. Now that various builders have offered prices, we seem to be in the used-car lot with the salesman asking if we want the blue one or the green one. We want NONE.

  1. No. It’s OPM. Other peoples money.

This is what drives local politics. It’s all about influencing political decisions whereby the public pays for something that benefits the business interests of the influencer.

  2. I just drove through downtown and there is plenty of parking so clearly what we have is a distribution problem. All these big-government Garage-zilla supporters that say there’s a parking problem should just re-distribute their parking to Monday night instead of Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. Sheesh, use your heads people.

  3. You picked the wrong day. Many restaurants are closed on Monday which definitely lessens the parking problems of that evening.

  4. Something tells me 4:06 was making a joke about the “we don’t have a parking problem, we have a parking distribution problem” talk that seems to have gone out in this week’s talking points memo.

  5. I feel so hopeless about the future of the world, the country, and the state that it’s tragic to feel the same way about the town.

  6. 6:01 – I am tired of these lame excuses. If you say you saw plenty of parking on any certain day, the garagaholics like you come back with any of the following:

    . it was raining
. it was a holiday and people were out of town
. it was a holiday and people were busy with family
. it was a Monday and some restaurants are closed on Mondays
. it was too early in the day to get a fair estimate
. it was too late in the day and people had already gone home
. it was a Saturday noon and no one goes out until later
. it was a Saturday night and people were using UBER
. it was not raining so people were walking to town
. it was snowing so people were home shoveling
. it was snowing but then it stopped so people went skiing

Get it? There are ALWAYS available spots in town, in spite of Jeff Voigt’s declaration that there are 1000 cars looking for parking on the weekends. There are ALWAYS spots, regardless of whatever excuse you come up with.

  7. 9:08 of course you just might have to walk a little bit, right?

  8. 9:08 is 100% correct.
    .
We DO NOT need a parking Garage.
    .

  9. Nj transit should take the old ken smith property by eminent domain. Commuters can park there during the day.
    Restaurant goers at nite
zero cost to Ridgewood tax payers
    One less proposed apartment site
    2 problems solved.

  10. 7:52 If only…

  11. So true @9:08. There are in fact Monday’s, summer days, rainy days, spring break days etc all throughout the year and probably a few hours/day (say 4-8) that fall between the months of September -November and April-June where parking can be tight or inconvenient to find. Strategically do you build to accommodate a handful of busy days or is it wise to provide adequate supply for the vast majority of days? When retailers are over capacity with their goods it either gets thrown away or left in the discount bin…

  12. I also hate it in the summer when it rains and I can’t use Graydon. Can we build an indoor pool for those days?

  13. 4:38 would the indoor pool have a sand bottom and dirty water?
