Reader says We do not need to turf and pave every green space in Ridgewood

Graydon_Summerfun_theridgewoodblog

I think that the grass roots effort to elect an independent council and to petition a new garage vote have confused some people.

The annual “I want a cement pool” has begun. A woman posted on Facebook about the “filthy” water and the chorus joined in. They are demanding a cement pool. (And full day K)

They are unaware that the water is tested and their opinion is not fact. They think that clear pools are always sanitary. When they use words like disgusting and filthy they forget that other people actually swim there. They are insulting the Graydon swimmers knowingly or unknowingly. Lots of kide enjoy the swim team and summer camp.

Coxsackie disease is very contagious and spread from person to person. WASH YOUR HANDS. Cover your cough! Swimmers ear is not caused by Graydon, it occurs when water remains in the ear canal. I come from a family of competitive swimmers, many have had ear infections, none ever swam at Graydon. Anecdotal evidence does not point to cause. My peditrician thought that it was silly to blame Graydon for these illnesses

I brought my three children to Graydon for years. They loved it. Al of their friends were there and they made new friends every day.

Just because you want something different does not mean that the village must provide it. You can join another pool, go to a neighbors pool or even build your own. The options are there.

We do not need to turf and pave every green space in town.

  1. Agree completely with this article, there is no good or valid reason to pave over everything in sight.

  2. Haven’t we flogged this one to death,it’s time for moving closer together for a few years as the new administration comes in to clean up the mess.lets not race into another divisive issue as Graydon pool again.

  3. If you do not want to go there you don’t have to. To say that the pool is “filthy” is rude and uninformed.

A friend of my daughter’s told us that she would never go to Graydon because it was too dirty. The seven year old was just parroting her parents but it embarrassed my daughter. She did not want to swim in dirty water either.

All pools have problems from time to time. The beaches at the shore are tested and closed from time to time. This does not make them permanently unswimmable. This past weekend some Nassau County beaches closed because of runoff from heavy rain.

Ridgewood is not Disneyland. We cannot have this perfect little town that is the happiest place on earth. We are dealing with garage development, green space turfing and high density housing. Add to this mix the fact that some people “want” a cement pool.

There are many options out there for water recreation, pools, lakes, beaches, water parks and sprinklers. Find the right one for your family and don’t insult those of us who enjoy Graydon.

  4. Coxsackie and swimmer’s ear are not spread by water or ducks! ! From the CDC:

“HFMD spreads from an infected person to others through:

close contact, such as kissing, hugging, or sharing cups and eating utensils,
    coughing and sneezing,
contact with feces, for example when changing a diaper,
    contact with blister fluid, and
touching objects or surfaces that have the virus on them.”

“How is Swimmer’s Ear Spread at Recreational Water Venues?
Swimmer’s ear can occur when water stays in the ear canal for long periods of time, providing the perfect environment for germs to grow and infect the skin. Germs found in pools and at other recreational water venues are one of the most common causes of swimmer’s ear.

Swimmer’s ear cannot be spread from one person to another.

If you think you have swimmer’s ear, consult your health care provider. Swimmer’s ear can be treated with antibiotic ear drops.”

  5. well said

  6. Isn’t it amazing how truly ignorant people can be ?

  7. Is Graydon taxpayer funded? If yes, then people have every right to complain!

Alternatively, those in love with it as is are free to convert it into a private members only club.

  8. Would like to get season passes to Graydon for the family but spouse’s priorities are a concrete bottom and crystal clear water. So, no Graydon. What can one do, you still have to keep the peace…

  9. 10:39 am sounds like a typical troll: “I used to like [or want to like] X, but sadly….”

  10. 7:46 am: I could not agree more! Are we desperate for things to fight about? There are plenty of others. PJ Blogger, please do not fan the flames on this non-issue.

  11. One is entitled to their own opinions but hopefully they are based on facts. Any swimming facility can be linked to swimmers ear because it is caused by water remaining in the ear canal. The coxsackie virus is a common child hood occurrence. When I lived in Brooklyn all the children in our little play group came down with it and we were not near any swimming facility. Graydon may not be perfect but my children and those of my friends loved it because of the sand and water and a chance to be together while the parents chatted away.

  12. It is the subject of a Facbook post. More than 50 responses. Most in agreement. I think that those who do not like the idea are quiet, no more arguments on Facebook.

  13. 12:06 it only means another summer of (unnecessarily) hoofing it out of town to take an unsatisfying dip in the water. Graydon is much more convenient and relaxing, and less expensive, but the spouse just won’t budge.
