Ridgewood NJ, tech giants Amazon and Meta recently hit unexpected regulatory hurdles in their plans to power data centers with energy from nuclear facilities. While the move to locate data centers near nuclear plants aimed to meet growing power demands sustainably, neither company’s setback had anything to do with nuclear concerns.

Meta’s project faced a unique environmental snag: a rare bee species was discovered on the land designated for the data center. This sighting has brought ecological protection measures into play, effectively halting development. Meanwhile, Amazon’s proposal was rejected due to its potential impact on the surrounding community. Regulators raised concerns that Amazon’s high energy demands could reduce reliability and raise costs for other customers relying on the nearby nuclear power facility.

In contrast, Microsoft’s nuclear initiative is still moving forward. The company has proposed reviving a dormant reactor at the Three Mile Island site, where it aims to leverage nuclear power to meet its data center needs without disrupting service for other customers or impacting local ecosystems.

These regulatory responses underscore the complex considerations tech companies face as they explore nuclear energy solutions for sustainable growth. While nuclear power offers a low-carbon path to energy-intensive operations, site-specific factors and local regulations remain critical.
